Riot has stated that they believe playing with friends is "the true way to play league", but what if I am competitively better than my friends? How am I supposed to climb on my own now that Riot has purposefully stacked the deck against solo queue players?

League is moving in a team oriented direction. The ability to solo carry is less important than your ability to read positioning and body language when communicating with your team. So long as you learn the skills that are currently important, rather than only focusing on the ones required by the old queue, you will do just fine.

With that being said, you're better off duo'ing with someone. There are too many variables in a pure soloQ game, your allies champions and their ability to play that champion well, their toxicity level, general game intelligence. Bringing along a friend, or even someone you just met, that you know won't rage or feed horrendously is smart.
Three people is risky, you start going against coordinated premades or a generally higher mmr. 4+ people is bad, and I'd avoid it unless you're going tryhard comms + teamcomp + playing. The difference between having a 3 man que, and a 4+ man que is insane.
