She'd be Karma'd. Same name, but different kit.

Sure, you'll get people to play her, but old-school Soraka players will hold a grudge just like Karma players are doing right now.

Not a big fan of overhauling a champion kit, for the sake of being "innovative and fresh", when the kit themselves can simply use a modernization.

I miss CDR Tank Soraka.

Just standing near the middle of teamfights, shredding enemy magic resistance into negative values while constantly slowing them.

It was beautiful.

Pretty much this. Soraka has always been THE HEAL SUPPORT (even though healing is a super-hard thing to balance) and removing her heals / support - centric kit would change her to a completely new champion.

If you want to throw stars at people, maybe another Aspect would be a good direction to go - a champion that is drawing on the siphoned power of Asol. Or just make a cosmic mage, which might be a bit difficult due to overlap with Sol, Veigar, and perhaps even Bard.

I'm sorry, I don't recognize that champion...

No, but seriously, while she does have an ability called paddle-star, she just doesn't feel as cosmic to me as the others I mentioned. I can certainly see arguments for it, but she's just a bit too much on the whimsical side of magic, whereas I think the cosmos is more of a Asol sort of thing - large, powerful, and awesome.

Galio Urgot Yorick Warwick Kit resembles his old kit but because of how it works it completely changed how he builds . same with the rest with the how he builds part.

Soraka is the most iconic healing champion in the game. Removing the healer aspect of her is an absolute no-go.

She wouldn't be Soraka at all anymore. Some changes to champions and reworking them is fine, but you don't remove something that is so iconic that it pretty much defines the entire champion.

BLIGHTBRINGER2 votes

I know I didn't mean it that way, even if I sounds that way. I just wish that Soraka could have more impact in game outside of healing or more depth to her character about her backstory before giving in to the mortal body form that she is in now.

Kaìju5 votes

I play her because she is the prime healer. If you remove that I would never play her again.

IcyPepper4 votes

Then it wouldn't be Soraka.

If you wanted a mage with a theme around stars, you already have AurelionSol

What would mage Soraka bring to the table?

Karunamon2 votes

No snark intended: Perhaps a kit that doesn't feel passive and braindead? Soraka's got the same problem Janna has, in that they feel like squishy casters with anemic spells and little game impact. Proper mages are still squishy, but are more impactful.

Even other supports do their job better.

Imagine Janna with CC that's easier to target, lasts longer, with better disengage and better heals? Nami.

Imagine Soraka without healing, but with much better poke/harass and greater ability to set up plays? Lulu, or even Nami again if we discount heals.

I think the only use that both of those champs have at this point is that they're great for newbies and lowest of the low elo. Once you develop the ability to hit your skillshots reliably, it just kinda stops being fun playing either since you have much more impact on the game.

IcyPepper3 votes

I'm sorry if I came across as snippy.

Soraka can be played a little aggressively with her Q and E, more than Janna imo (unless you count flash+ult Janna insec), but her ult is a global game-changer if you have good map awareness.

Although I get it. I don't think making Soraka a mage would fix those issues, though. I'm personally not opposed to a few "easy" support champions (like Annie is for mages, or Garen for fights), but changing Soraka that much probably isn't the right direction.

If anything, I'd change her ultimate. Make it like redemption, but a channel similar to Janna's where it deals damage to enemies and heals allies over time. Maybe some kind of starfall/meteor shower? Huge nerf to her early game, maybe a buff to her lategame if done well. Little more mage-y, but still Soraka.

Karunamon1 votes

That's fair, a Soraka ult at the right time can save either a person or a teamfight. I still think though that the rest of her kit screams "passive" and "old design" - like from the days when supports were just ward bots.

IcyPepper1 votes

I dunno, I do like being aggressive with her Q and E. Maybe instead of having a passive based on landing Q for sustain and her W costing health, make her heal scale with recent hits made by Q? Maybe store a charge, like a healer version of item 3285 's passive? An aggressive Soraka heals more, a passive Soraka can barely heal poke?

What would be wrong with that though?

I mean that's the same as saying that we don't need another (Fire/Water/Ice/Air) based champion because such already exist...

  • Fire: Brand Annie (Kind of Ornn)

  • Water: Nami TahmKench Nautilus Fizz

  • Ice: Anivia Ashe Braum Lissandra Nunu Sejuani

  • Air: Janna Yasuo

It's okay to have champions who have similar themes, as long as they bring something unique to the table as you say. I believe if she was a mage, Riot could definitely explore the potential for her character since a lot come to mind... (for me atleast)

yeah and screw every single person that likes playing as that champion currently. Why even bother changing Soraka and not just make a new champion at that point? it's the same thing that people complained about when they made the new Karma. Soraka is supposed to be THE healer of the game, changing it to be anything but that is just going to cause issues with her playerbase

BLIGHTBRINGER1 votes

It's kind of sad, because I really like her personality but it makes her as a champion in terms of abilities feel a bit self limiting.

IcyPepper2 votes

The problem is that Soraka is the healer. That's always been her fantasy. Moving her to the mage role would completely remove that (because nobody wants a solo laner with damage and high sustain like that). That would be like changing Brand to be an ice mage.

The problem isn't that we already have a star mage, the problem is that it wouldn't be Soraka (who, well, already has a star theme already). I did not articulate that well.

BLIGHTBRINGER1 votes

What if there was a new champion who was related to Soraka in some way but was primarily Mage instead of a Support? But that champion would still be somewhat viable if picked as a Support.

Even in the lore, there's no information as to who Star Children are or anything. Exploring this theme has potential, or at least I believe it does.

IcyPepper2 votes

I would not be opposed to a new champion like this

RocketRelm1 votes

quietly raises hand

I want mid laners with damage and high sustain. Specifically to play them. They wrecked Morgana's laning phase with her nerfs (and her changes were on average nerfs, once the dust settled), but before that she was a high sustain mid.

Morg Mid's still fine now cause we're in the Slave-To-ADC meta, and she performs wonderfully now, but once that ends her viability mid is roast. Point being, some of us like the idea of mid lane mages that aren't super mega snowball, though I'll admit I liked the game more as a whole when games didn't end at 10-20 minutes.

I think we've gone a bit too far at burning sustain laners out of the game, and think we could use some back.

IcyPepper1 votes

If they did make a high sustain mage, it'd be more akin to Mundo/Garen. Morgana has damage and cc, so giving her too much sustain makes her too all-round good (imo).

If they could make a sustain mage, by all means that would be interesting, but they would not likely be able to heal their allies.

Pokemonred2001 votes

If old soraka was anything to go by, Undodgable AOE MR Shred, Low-Effort Waveclear, Strong Mana Sustain for whomever she pleased (including herself), and a point-and-click silence that didn't cost her any mana.

Pokemonred2004 votes

Wasn't she a mage before her rework?

With her undodgable MR Reducing Q and her self-cast E that made her give herself mana and her enemy-cast E that was a point and click silence that didn't cost mana and her old W that could target herself and give its target armor and had cooldown reduced every time she Q'd

She was played Midlane and was apparently reworked into current Soraka for having a laning phase that most opponents couldn't deal with since her silence and armor meant you don't get to engage and she basically auto-shoved all lanes. I'd probably play Soraka a hell of a lot more if that Soraka came back, though.

Yeah, I miss the old Rala. Haven’t played her much since the rework. Seems like you have to build a damn Warmog on hernow just to be somewhat effective as a healer. She needs another rework imo. Perhaps revert back and just tidy up the old kit a bit was all she ever really needed.

BLIGHTBRINGER3 votes

I would say that she was equally the same before and after her rework because even back then before the rework she still had tools that would suggest she was a support (E Giving mana to allies, W heal to allies that also granted bonus armor, and a global heal).

Reason as to why she's even less viable as a Mage is because her E is hard to make use of because of how long the channel time is (this is what makes good Soraka players stand out if they can trap enemies in her E).

Her Q would be good but it doesn't deal that much dmg since the AP scalling isn't great but that's because all of her scallings were shifted to her W and her R for the sake of being a support specifically.

She was even more of a healer before than now. Her kit was rather obnoxious and basically reversed anything your opponent threw at you, making laning tedious and extended for the opponent, while she just casually threw bananas at them until they died from potassium overdose. Basically, all you did was sat there and poke + farm for 15 minutes straight, while the opponent is kinda...there...

Riot didn't like that and removed that lack of interaction in laning and forced her to make decisions. Basically, they changed it so her healing had limitations. On one hand, it makes it less boring and dull, while preventing Soraka from staying alive forever, but at the same time, their execution wasn't the greatest.

Sort of. She was a tanky-healing-battlemage with a mana gift on her E.

JavelinJoe4 votes

She was once played mid lane (occasionally, as an off-meta but somewhat viable pick) back when her Q was a spam ability.

Jackom14 votes

As problematic as her kit is, I don't want her to end up like karma. No champion deserves such a treatment.

I'd like a kit that made her somewhat alternate between a control mage style and full on healer. But I still want her to be a support who can put out strong healing, not a mage.

She would be a completely different champ and lose all of her playerbase

I used to play her midlane prior to the rework. So yes if she got a new passive, W, and revert the E to pre-rework form I would. I would keep the ult though. I don't think riot should get rid of healer soraka, rather I'd prefer them turn her into a battlemage/healer who could go mid or bot.

IMO the best way to do this is first riot would have to announce a martyr healer to take her place as the alpha healer.

Witch of Babylon1 votes

I personally would. After all, Soraka IS the starchild, right?

Salamencę1 votes

They should do a mini rework on her. This is what I propose:

Passive : Same as currently, but a bit longer range. Soraka gains 70% bonus movement speed when moving towards allied champions below 40% of their maximum health. EFFECT RADIUS: 3000

Q : Same as pre-rework Q but no MR shred. In exchange, increase the base damage a bit.
RANGE: 530 COST: 30 / 35 / 40 / 45 / 50 MANA COOLDOWN: 2.5 DAMAGE: 60 / 85 / 110 / 135 / 160(+ 40% AP)

W : Current W, but with higher mana costs since it won't require HP. TARGET RANGE: 550 COST: 90 / 100 / 110 / 120 / 130 MANA COOLDOWN: 8 / 6.5 / 5 / 3.5 / 2 HEAL: 80 / 110 / 140 / 170 / 200 (+ 60% AP)

E : Current E, maybe make the root duration a tiny bit longer and lower cooldown since it's not point and click. TARGET RANGE: 925 COST: 70 MANA COOLDOWN: 20 / 18 / 16 / 14 / 12 ROOT DURATION: 1.25 / 1.5 / 1.75 / 2 / 2.25 DAMAGE: 70 / 110 / 150 / 190 / 230 (+ 60% AP)

R : Current R. No changes except maybe some number tweaking. EFFECT RADIUS: Global COST: 120 MANA COOLDOWN: 160 / 145 / 130 **HEAL **: 150 / 250 / 350 (+ 60% AP)

I think this would make her viable as a mid laner again if you want an off meta pick.

Numbers for all of these can obviously be tweaked

to further my comment, at one point you could play her as a solo mid laner. However, this dated back to season 3 and earlier. Her old Q could shred magic resist per cast, stacking up to somehting rediculous like 10 stacks. It affected all enemy units in a radius around her, without a chance to miss. Much like Karthus' Requiem (R). So no, I don't miss those days of 0 interactivity.

OverpoweredSoap1 votes

She's honestly not that terrible in the solo lane, compared to most supports.

She just can't put points into her W often, which is why she isn't play mid, because it kind of defeats her purpose.

Sounds exactly like Karma all over again. I mained Karma and then Soraka once Scarma came out. This rework almost made me quit the game.
