Real reason why mage supports are moving in on "classic" ones

chipndip1··2 votes·458 views

What is the main thing supports need? Strong bases.

What is it that the mage supports have? Strong bases.

If the classic supports can't keep up, what's wrong with them? Their early games aren't up to snuff.

Buff their bases.

It's not that simple. Buffing classic supports could do more harm than good. I also still think most 'classic' supports are completely viable right now. In short, classic supports are not the problem. The problem is a lot more complex than that. If any support archetype needs help right now, its tank supports. They are straight fucked, and not equipped to deal with a AP-Poke meta.

  • People have figured out that you can play a mage support, do well and get gp5, then have more impact in the mid game through damage and cc. This is really important. They've opened up a new meta and way to play. This also lets more players enjoy the role. I honestly think this is a healthy change.
  • Damage creep promotes burst-style champions, and oh god are mages at the frontline of that experience right now - this also contributes to having mage supports.
  • Solo Q mentality has also had a huge effect. A lot of players KNOW that the ADC they get might be awful, and are planning contingencies for that problem. Good lord have I carried so many games since I've decided to drop a terrible ADC and 'own' the lane with my AP support.
  • The fact that it's 'hot' right now also affects it - bandwagon approach. Anyone who plays support is aware of Malzahar/Ziggs.

i'm not really sure what the solution is, it could be a lot of things, from new items to a new vision game - but ultimately, the problem is just more complex than your letting on.

It is, but if I tried to make a long piece on different problems in the support role, from appeal to the meta, no one would read that shit.

if you combine "classic" supports utility with high bases then you'd have the opposite happening with these classic supports moving into solo lanes.

So let them get blatantly outclassed in the one thing they do? Got it.

People realized death is the best form of c.c. I'm guessing the vanguard rework will help a little

chipndip11 votes

How will a top lane oriented rework help bot lane's meta?

Vanguard support isn't unheard of. Leona, Nautilus, and even Malphite has seen some support play. With the rework, it might not be uncommon to see things like Amumu or Sejuani support, too. And most likely, Wardens will make use of new items too, which would benefit Thresh, Braum, Tahm, etc.

  • The new items will be primarily geared to solo laners, so I doubt this will help tank supports in the long run.

  • Amumu or Sej support? I'ma be nice and pretend you never said this.

  • Still doesn't solve the issue of other supports starting off too weak in comparison to mage variants.

lol ive seen it in games ...

I've seen Sej once. Not like she won, though, so point stands.

Items like Locket and Knight's Vow are geared towards supports, but still get picked up on solo laners. We really don't know what's gonna happen yet until we get more details.

And yes, champions who aren't traditionally played supports may be played supports due to some changes in their kit and itemization. Like pretty much every single mage support being played now. You'd react the same about Malzahar support couple patches ago.

They're doing some work on tank stats overall, so there may be new ways for tanks (and tank supports) to survive early game better. We just don't know much about what's gonna happen yet.

Doesn't matter. Locket isn't a "tank support" item. It's an "overpowered as fuck" support item. EVERYONE builds it. Anything they do for Locket will Enchanters even more than it will tank supports, seeing how Enchanters build heal/shield passives while stacking the same stats they do because Riot knows fuck all about getting people to build their intended stats.

Besides, these are defensive items, and the rework is geared towards offensive tanks. Why would they look at either of these items?

There's no reason why Sej, a scaling, melee, tank support, would be strong as a support, where you need to be an early game champ to do well.

Same for Amumu. Even more so for Amumu. I shouldn't have to type this out.

That's really the only hope anyone has to bank on in this situation. Even then, this is geared towards offensive, solo laning tanks.

lol yet they ( riot ) did this to sona ... for months on end every one cried how broken and unfair she was and she shouldnt be able to do that much poke damage blah blah blah

downvoted again for speaking truth...

sheep dont like the herd to be disturbed

chipndip11 votes

Nobody cares, and that's the problem.

Same thing with Locket.

Everyone builds Rylais because it's just generally useful on every ap champ and we want nerfs.

Everyone builds Locket because it's just generally useful on every champ in the support role, period, and it's "balanced".

Support will never be a good role and shit like this is why.

your preaching to the choir here CHIP ... im a support player and love the role and playing it...

chipndip11 votes

All there is to preach to. Anyone else and I get downvote slapped in the face.

man who are you talking to about downvotes ...

do you know who i am ? lol

Correct.

It used to the that Bot Lane was a mirrored dichotomy. ADCs had pisspoor early game and needed to be babysat 100% of the time to survive and farm up. Supports had great early games that fell off pretty substantially as the game went, but those early levels were enough to get them and the ADC out of the laning phase.

People clamored for Supports to be more useful in late game, so they lost bases for scalings. Except, bases were all they had, and their scalings all underperform too because a Support isn't allowed to solo lane. So we're stuck in the hell hole of mid lane mages being just as, if not more, equipped to protect an ADC while having good scalings. On the other side of the street, Supports get nerfed to the ground the moment they gaze at another lane to play in.

Because there are actually fun, and you can have an impact on the game as a mage support.

chipndip11 votes

No one will listen to that so I'm taking baby steps.
