What to do when I'm top and winning, but rest of the team isn't doing great?

O Fallen Scholar··23 votes·4,758 views

I really want your honest opinion on this. My own thing would be to rotate out from the lane or teleport when I see an opportunity to help my poor team. But that means I leave enemy top laner for free farming and I can't stop him from pushing lanes in. This is the worst feeling ever when I just watch my teammates being so helpless. Meanwhile enemy top laner just pushes for free entire game despite I punished him hard.

Ultimately, your question boils down to pressure, because that's what determines who wins league. If you get ahead, there are several ways to go about applying pressure. If you feel powerful, like someone has fed you a bit - **find a way to put more pressure on the enemy team. MAKE them devote more resources to dealing with you, and less to dealing with your allies. **

1.) Keep pushing - take towers. Taking towers solo is dangerous and difficult. Many champions can take advantage of someone who attempts this - It also makes you extremely vulnerable to ganks. Nevertheless, this is a straightforward strategy that can devastate enemy teams. If you have lots of escape tools, this strategy becomes more appealing. Ever had a game where everyone's too busy to check on top, and by the time anyone can get up there, your halfway down into the 2nd tower? this is the sort've thing I'm talking about.

2.) Roam to a different lane and attempt a gank. Your goal is to score a kill, or WEAKEN an enemy laner. Get them to go back to base, that's free pressure for your team. Stick around and pick up a turret if you can. DEFEND your weaker allies if the enemy jungler comes.

3.) Go for Baby Baron or Dragon. This is another way to apply big pressure to the map, but its hard to do solo. Gotta recruit a jungler or midlane.

**Bonus Advice: **Since you seem to be a top guy, learn how to use teleport better. Watch the other lanes, and try to pick a better time to TP down. If your nervous about TP, save it for getting back to lane, and roam the old-fashioned way.

!!!! SUPER ULTRA BONUS ADVICE 2: !!!!

Another thing: Taking the first tower is extremely impacting to the laning phase, because it means your opponent can't really lane safely. If you know you can win a fight, and the first tower is down, try waiting for him to push the lane, then sneak around behind him from his jungle - If you do this and kill him even once, **he will be TERRIFIED of pushing when you are not there. ** This will allow you to roam much easier, and you'll notice he wont try to push to your tower. That being said, if their Jungler is doing well - this strategy can backfire. As with most things in league, warding and vision control is critical when executing most of these strategies!

"Baby Baron" as you put it (really friggen cute name btw) can be done solo by just about any champion if you know what you are doing. Every champion is fast enough to walk around it and hit the eye during it's normal auto attacks, so you just have to be strong enough to kill it during the final 10% or whatever when the eye doesn't open and not take absurd amounts of damage before then.

Supports can do it with only minor trouble, so any top laner should be able to do it pretty easily, especially if they bought a lifesteal item.

k wìx2 votes

I did not realize it was this easy, as I am a support main. It's surprisingly rare to see players attempt baby baron solo. Too easy to steal maybe?

Skins Project3 votes

Time would be the biggest concern yes.

Automated Riven1 votes

Yeah its largely the time facter. If you get caught unless you have a way over the wall or an escape of some sort your likely gonna die. It takes about 15-20 seconds to solo it due to how often the back eye opens.

k wìx1 votes

As a support main, next time I'm having an amazing game, I'm going to roam up to baby baron and try to solo it.

Durzaka2 votes

Doing it solo leaves you incredibly vulnerable to it being stolen though. As the enemy jungler could just walk over to you, fuck you up and then simply right click the dropped buff and move on.

So thats why it is rarely soloed. Gotta have good knowledge of whats going on and where everyone is. And even then, when youre gone from top for that long, any competent enemy top laner should be calling the Herald kill and call the Jungler over.

Once you kill the herald once, you'll realize it's a free take for anybody over level 8 if nobody can see you take it, it really was a game-changing change, but nobody knows yet.

Somebody listed a lot of things to do, by my advice is to roam and give up your tower. If you can kill some of them and help the other lanes, you'll get gold if you win and won't lose much if you die (because the situation is already hopeless.)

And after they take your tower, they'll isolate themselves in your top jungle on occasion and you can keep your enemy lane opponent from pushing much longer. Like Phreak said, there's strategic tower-giving-up conditions, you're actually wasting your time going back to farm the waves crashing under it seven more times in the match. That's like 3.5 minutes where you don't exist for your team just because you don't want to lose cs.

Bonus tip: Don't be too shy to just murder an opponent under their turret in another lane. They're forcing us to play korean that way.

And farm the enemy jungle if you have the sustain, but you probably know that by now.

RocketRelm1 votes

I think I might hop onto the practice tool, and test out how easy/hard it is at points... though I realize that the herald itself may not scale up-down to the level I want it to be comparative to the items/lvls I try it out on.

And of course, the fact that pushing makes you vulnerable to ganks means that you probably will get ganked a good bit: keeping the gankers from harassing the rest of your team. If you're doing well enough to win the resulting fights, smaller ganks can even further bolster your lead!

Try to Roam

A top lane who enters enemy jungle red/blue can be annoying as *$%^. Especially if you end up getting getting a kill or force enemy champions to try and leave the lane

IF you get the enemy mid laner to leave the lane, maybe your mid laner get push the tower, roam herself, or..etc

Basically, if the laning phase is not going well for you or your team, the best thing to do is try to create a scenario where you change the status quo. Meaning if you can get the enemy you fight you 2v2 and you guys win, perfect!

watch neace on youtube. He is a master level coach and will probably help you out a lot. Also I have no idea what kind of champions you main but playing stuff like darius, kled, riven, fiora and the like will hel you out a lot.

In all honestly you have to be selfish to climb. Always think "how can I carry" and don't rely on team mates unless you are severly behind and see one of your team mates doing well. After a couple of kills if you see an opportunity to get a kill roam and get it, then go back into lane, freeze and deny farm from the opponet, wait for him to rotate and then split push and break towers. Once you break second tier top tower go bot rinse and repeat. Don't team fight unless you see opportunities to get kills without duying and definitely don't do it if your team is severly behind and want to do aram while 2 levels behind. Try to always actively gain xp and farm and dominate by sheer stats

Asayake 5150glow1 votes

Help your team and grab a kill by flanking every time you return top. Yes he'll get farm and he won't be as weak, but you should still be able to fight him. Get your allies into better spots. Even if you're up against a Nasus or something, your teammates will be able to take him out even once he's stacked (although you may not be able to fight him anymore).

If you're a strong splitpusher and your enemy can't waveclear well (counter example, Darius will just oneshot the minion wave as it gets to his tower, so you won't get any tower damage or poke), and if you can 1v2/3, keep pushing to draw pressure away from your teammates.

Shuyin1781 votes

That's when you buy a Zz'Rot and afk push to pull pressure, then when they come after you teleport to the other side of the map and push there. It spreads the entire enemy team out to the point the retards on your team will have a chance to fight back or the enemy team loses side lane control.

Walk down and gank a lane somewhere to help apply pressure. Gank mid or walk down to bot and get a gank off there, possibly with the jungler in either cases. Only do so if your wave is pushed and if you have TP; a lot of people think you have to use TP to make a play but honestly you don't. You can buy early boots and roam and use your TP to make it back to your lane before the enemy top laner has shoved it in.

Cowseed1 votes

Was in the same situation. I lost the match though. When I actually found out what the problem was it was a bit too late. Don't let the rest of your team tilt. I had a shaco support he ended like 1/8/7 or something like that. Everyone was feeding hard to some extent except for the TF and me as I was going even. Our sejuani was obviously tilted and came under the impression that 'if our bot feeds then I can do what ever I want' and thus kept getting himself in some very stupid and assinine 2v1s. The adc was also negative.

By the time I tried to maintain order there was none. It is important to maintain good communication. If anyone tells you not to think less of your teamates they are wrong. There will be people who you have to treat like children. In low elo there are two types of matches. Matches where everyone on the team will be on the same level and the game will end in a stomp or both teams will cut it close and then there are the matches where it is clear that someone will have to rise and carry. Sometimes the teamates will be so heavy that you could be level 18 at 10 minutes and it wouldn't help. In this instance you will have to either point out their mistakes (not in a condescending way but a way that will make them cover that) or you can just cover for them.

If you see someone always dying at bot tell them to stop over extending or if your scared that it'll set them off tell them they need to group with the team ;). But this is basically the other half of the coin that says 'just carry harder'. If your not good at catching up from behind or getting a lead early then for you communication with the others is key.

You could also tp gank bot as well. Tried this against a warwick. Got favourable results seeing as how he wasn't much of a pusher. If he's a pusher like teemo, trynd or nasus XDDDDDDDDDDDDDD prepare for the possibility of never going in another lane the whole game.

Ungrateful Thug1 votes

If you're a fed top laner, you can usually easily solo a fed AD carry. If your bot lane still needs to farm up safely, you can have them rotate top (which should be easy, because the enemy top laner is already behind) while you go bot lane. Or you can just come bot (preferably with help from your jungler), dive the enemy bot lane, and then swap lanes afterward. Ward up the enemy jungle and look to pick the jungler whenever they go for a camp.

Ah O Yeah Harder1 votes

You ff. Just look at my last game. Won my lane easily, zilean had 38 farm while i had 80 and 2 kills. Our Kass was feeding the Syndra who was 3/1/1 with 80 farm. I tell kass to go top.

I win mid lane, taking her tower, and killing her 5 times in 7 minutes (had junglers help 1 time).

Now Kass is doing fine top, not getting killed, not getting kills either, but hes getting farm.

But, now Kha the enemy jungler is fed because Lee sin keeps going in their jungle without vision, and then gets deleted in .7 seconds. He does this about 6 times in the next 10 minutes. Now Kha is sitting at 8 kills, camping bot lane.

So I decide to go bot lane, our adc is 2/6 level 12, our support is level 11 1/2. The enemy adc is level 15 with over 2k more gold than jhin. The enemy support is level 14. I shut down bot lane. Take bots tower.

Now Mid, Top, and bot are all good.

So now the only problem is Kha. I tell my team to group while I go split (because im the only 1 with tp). And what do you know, jhin and lulu stay bot, lee still goes in enemy jungle with lulu sometimes to feed, and kass afk farms top.

So I am splitting top, and looking everywhere for the Kha. Who I couldnt find all that game. We ended up losing with 4 dragons, taking baron, and me winning all the lanes.

Game ends with me having the most damage 32.7k, while 2nd place is kass with 22k. And the rest are below 20k and have tons of deaths.

Short answer: Quit top lane. You need to main ADC to rank up easier. Top lane is the hardest to carry from because:

  1. You get a 5 minute tp which is your only source of roaming. If you walk bot lane without tp, rip top tower, rip first blood tower, all just to get no assists or kills bot lane.
  2. You rely on your team to listen. "GROUP im fed!" -Everyone splits and makes the game harder for you.
  3. You only get 1 laner to kill instead of bot lane having 2 people to get fed off of, most of the time 3 beens the junglers are always there.
  4. Your impact is too small in the game. All of your plays come from how hard you can push top lane to enemy inhib, and your tp plays.
  5. Youre champ is either made for dueling people, or to tank/protect your team. While Adcs/Assassin junglers/Mid laners are made for dealing huge damage. Once they get fed, its over.
DemainaNyx1 votes

I think it depends on the game and who you are playing.

If you are playing a good splitpusher, ward up and keep pushing while being safe.

If you can help your team, swap lanes so your losing laners can farm up safely and catch up, and then crush their lanes for them.

I had a game where I got like 4 kills as Ashe vs Draven. Enemy 5/0 Camille came down and there was nothing I could do to stop her from killing me under my tower with my support and jungler trying to peel her off me. All the while Draven is just farming casually top lane and eventually cashed in at some point so he was even with me again.

There are tons of options depending on team comps, skill levels, and point in the game. Utilize the strategies/strategy you and your team can best execute. Some ideas below:

  1. Shove a giant wave in top, back, walk to bot or mid and setup gank (don't wait forever, but more than 4 sec if needed) - gank lane, win fight, tp back top to giant wave outside your tower.
  2. Same as 1, except stay bot to get tower with your team, have mid rotate top if their lane is shoved out - or grab a drag if tower is too risky, also deep ward enemy bot jungle.
  3. Shove wave, gank mid - if mid and jg are not TOO FAR behind, you can threaten a 3 man dive and grab a kill if the enemy mid stays - or pick off enemy jungler trying to rotate to prevent just such a play.
  4. Split push, pull enemy mid/sup/jg or some combination thereof to your lane, win outnumbered fight. Generally best IF you can get your losing bot and mid to group and push towers with jungle as a 4 man unit. Since you are giving them a 4v3 or 4v2, they should have no problem pressuring towers - just remind them to ward their flanks and you need to keep track of your 2 or 3 enemies you are distracting.
  5. Trade places with bot or mid - let them farm to catch up with enemy mid/bot vs your underleveled lane opponent while you use your lead to hold their fed opponent(s) in check in their lane or even beat the enemy bot duo/mid.
  6. In some cases, the enemy has a bunch of burst that can pop one of your teammates guaranteed even if they have a 4v3 and allow the enemy to win the fight after that. In this case, if you can tank that burst, set up pushing side waves to pull 1 or 2 enemies out of position, then force a fight while you get a (temporary at least) 5v4 or 5v3. Tank the full enemy burst and either try to escape or just deal as much damage as possible - buying your teammates time to get off as much damage as they can. If you can't win a fight like this, you probably are just going to lose no matter what you try because your teammates are just too far behind.

At least in gold and below, once the first tower falls, the weaker bot/mid should be 3 or 4 man grouping (safety in numbers and hugging towers) to pressure towers - rotating between 2 lanes as needed to protect their towers and forcing the enemy team to respect them more than they would if they were 1 and 2 man farming lanes with no tower to protect them.

Depends on your character.

If you are kicking ass your best bet is to stay top to draw multiple enemies and set up your team for 4v3 or picks.

DuskDaUmbreon1 votes

It depends on you and your opponent.

If your opponent is Nasus, never leave lane. Period. You can only do so if he actually is in another lane. Also applies to any fast pusher. Tryndamere is one of the other big offenders.

If you're Nasus, staying top may be better. You may be able to draw their attention enough to require them to 2v1 or 3v1 you. Either that, or you'll eventually take Nexus.

Either way, your choices boil down to two things: Roam and risk losing a turret (or more), or become a large enough threat to divert most of their team, and risk you not becoming utterly unstoppable fast enough.

lolipopevelynn1 votes

Honestly the WORST thing u can do is help 2 or more losing lanes. You will fall behind and get draged down. The best thing you can do is stay top and create pressure but not die in the process.

By staying top and dominating the lane you force the jg and mid lane to come after you and sometimes the support as Well. This relieves ALOT of pressure off your losing lanes and gives them time to farm and catch up. The very important part of this tactic tho is to not die. Look at the map and ward.

Champions like illoai darius irelia and Camille are perfect for this because if they get fed you simply can not 1v1 them. Not possible.

Vlada Cut1 votes

I usually try to go full AD or tank with high ad in a cost of losing some armor/mr. No point in investing that if you need the most out of these stats. It's something I did with Camille so I had 3850 hp and 465 dmg and hardcore carried the game 26/3, but besides getting kills it was also based on pushing towers every time you'd get a chance. Although it's all based on the situation you're stuck with. Sometimes you won't be able to push objectices because enemy scrubs would die and respawn one or two at the time untill they find a way to put an end to you. Sometikes you can determinetly hardcarry sometimes you don't. I suggest finding teammates you know they won't grief or give up 1st. That's a good start.
