Can someone explain why they like the new soraka to me?

I'm just trying to understand why people still like her, much less why riot forced a polarizing rework on her fanbase.

  1. can't self heal very well (only heal is dodgable and is on a long CD until you rank Q later)
  2. slow as molasses
  3. can't dodge skill shots that well because of two
  4. can't escape from people with movespeed or dashes
  5. easily kited by low allies running the wrong way (can't do your job)
  6. can't heal allies well once enemy is past your front line (if you have one)
  7. an easy kill if you are using her W heal.
  8. Large mana cost when ranking Q. Large health cost on W.
  9. no mana gift anymore
  10. If you have low confidence in your allies, you really don't want to press W, negating her healer theme entirely.
  11. If you heal an ally and they still die, you are a huge risk for giving up a double kill.
  12. Low chance to secure a kill if your carry dies on you because you are lacking in damage and honestly, you've probably hurt yourself a lot to try to keep him alive.
  13. No armor buff and no MR aura anymore means her heals have lower EHP so healing a squishy carry means he can still be bursted easily because he's got no armor.

Most importantly, I'm curious where the little fun found in her kit went. I don't see it anymore. I've been trying to play her, but every time I do it seems like her flaws are glaring and her strengths are dim. I mean some days I can work around her, but it's getting to be more troublesome. Spamming W, hitting B, then running back into lane is not a fun gameplay style for me.

Sometimes I wish we had a proper primary healer champion that doesn't die trying to keep teammates alive.

Tbh, solo lane Soraka wasn't very interactive, and this is coming from someone who plays her.

It's infuriating she can't heal herself manually right now, and it's disgusting she needs to use her own health to heal (how does that make sense?), but otherwise I think she's fine reworked.

Wish sightstone didn't give health, it hurts her.

I get that the old one wasn't as interactive as riot wanted, but I'm trying to find the fun on an immobile bullseye. I'm trying to understand the fun in backing. I'm trying to understand the fun in a key support item hurting you more than it helps you. I'm trying to understand the fun on being useless if you get dove on... or caught up to.

This is a game right, shouldn't champs be fun?

IcyPepper2 votes

Depends on how you play, and how you build her. (though I definitely agree something needs to change about her interaction with sightstone, that's unhealthy and building necessary items shouldn't hurt you).

I have fun with her because I build her as an engaging/disengaging hybrid. I build cdr, defenses, and mana on her in order to spam the hell out of her Q (I also run mana regen runes) because it's so easy to dodge. I don't heal up my adc too much (heal every poke and they start getting careless and stop dodging skillshots or trade lazily), and I use my E as the ultimate zoning tool. It interrupts charges (royally pissing off Vi players), it keeps people from flashing toward you, redirects junglers that want to gank you forcing them to take the longer path, and can separate the enemy adc from their support. And don't even get me started on her ultimate.

Also, a tip. If you build her defense/cdr/mana, use yourself as bait. You might have to blow exhaust and ult to save yourself, but once they're exhausted and you Equinox them... easy pickings for your team.

I recall meddler mentioning that they pretty much thought that burst healing was going to be problematic and unfun. which puts soraka in a difficult situation because she's suppose to be a dedicated healer. Meddler also entertained the thought that a health battery would be a potentially healthy trade off for burst heal. (though I'm not sure they initially thought of Soraka when they first though of that conclusion)

I have two primary problems with Soraka as a Health battery. Is 1) She can't really reliably regenerate health. She can't use her W to self heal. Her Q is hard to hit (on a fair cooldown) And Promptly after season 5, her health regen takes a hit. They talked about giving her Q a fixed cast time to make up for the lost of passive healing, but I think that fell though.

and 2) their is no health scaling on her % HP ability. I noticed this with most Health based champions. The usually have some abillity that scales of Maximum heath, when it costs a %HP to cast. Now Soraka, does require the %HP cost to prevent never ending healing (which is on a short cooldown) But the fact that her Heal does not even the slightest scale with that max health means that it's an absolute deterrent to building health.

Deep Terror Nami1 votes

I find her to be (mostly) perfectly fine and fun.

I think she sacrifices too much health healing, and it scales so poorly that it's impossible to be useful on high HP tanks late game though. If it takes percentage health from you, you'd think it should heal a percentage as well as a flat number but nope, you can sacrifice all your health to the tank and they won't even benefit.

oh the fun part, zoning, trying to catch people in the Equinox root, turning a sure death into a pointless beating on someone with infinite health, running really fast Wee wooo wee wooo.

Honestly, I have more fun playing her kit now, but I still don't play her in ranked (to be fair though, I wouldn't play her in ranked pre-rework either, unless it was in a solo lane)

Linna Excel1 votes

Why don't you play her in ranked? Also what's the fun part of her kit to you?

MrBuffington1 votes

Why don't you play her in ranked?

I prefer utility/tank supports as oppose to sustain supports (Sona was one of my old main champions, but I seldom pick her now either). Feels too baby-sit-y, I always got the feeling my teammates would just make stupid trades and then expect me to heal them up (feels doubly bad since you're killing yourself to heal your teammate as Soraka), I'd rather they play smarter without having a sustain support as a safety net (whether that is actually true or not, I'm not sure, but that's been my impression playing Sona and such). I also feel like I have more ability to leave lane and roam to ward or gank mid or help out the jungler on a utility/tank support. Basically I feel like I have more freedom/impact on other supports; it's kind of like the difference between pushing your team into a situation to succeed (utility/CC), rather than picking them up after they fail (sustain). Maybe I just haven't found the right reason to pick a sustain support yet, but that's my reasoning for now.

Also what's the fun part of her kit to you?

Her skillshots are fun to use, and her auto attacks just feel nice. A lot of it is aesthetic, lol, I'm not really a fan of sustain supports in general though (There are some fairly narrow match ups/teams that I'd pick Sona into, especially over my main supports, Janna and Braum. I might play more Nami or Taric, though I'd be picking them more for the CC than the sustain)

Makes me smile, but thank you for explaining this to me. I am more right brained with the art side in life, so the science side at times is more brain side bar time to digest the left side of the brain level of commentary or discussions. Specifically pertaining to the ability Soraka she owns to Endure with maybe in the opinion stated not owning much to qualify on wanting her to back people up in battle if she is low with fighting ability. Fact in my game play when this is me:

Soraka summoner 7 summoner 13 : as this empowers me with the capacity to own the First Citizen Responder level of game play I find intriguing, but maybe my teammates might oppose. Especially when the games are more intense with the higher level of ranks, or the lopsided team lineups when trying to be a teammate with Soraka , while I champion her. Most of the time, my teammates are unaware in my following them when I am trying to heal them and then return to lane.

Overall, I think I am more of a liability, then an asset majority of the time.

I am building to other champions, and learning other roles. Not giving up, while trying to maintain my course in the direction of keeping up with the community of Riot League of Legends. I will continue to adapt where the majority refuse to waste their time with the attribute qualities of Adapting inside of online video game play scenarios; as is concluded from the decisions already made from those teammates inside of the games we shared and in how cohesive Soraka and I are as a tandem set of teammates on a team inside of a game hosted by Riot and League of Legends.

This comment relays much useful information for me. Thank you for the analysis! From: FuryofThornsRedo

I personally enjoy her a lot more for the simple fact that she feels a lot more rewarding and active to play. It feels great to position well and keep someone up while sustaining yourself through your Q. Her new E to me feels really nice to use. It just has the ability to impact fights very hard and has nice synergy with other AoE CCs. Overall it just feels like I'm capable of doing a lot more or have more options with her new kit.

I can understand why some people don't like her, but I love her post-rework.

  1. You can land it. It just takes practice. I hit it more often than not.
  2. Passive helps, plus all the awesome items on her (item 3069, item 3504, item 3023, and almost always item 3117) have ms, so I tend to actually be the fastest on my team. It helps a lot to go fast.
  3. See 2, plus unless I've healed my adc a bit and I'm starting to get lower on health, I just stay out of range. Trading doesn't hurt them, so it's just a waste of mana.
  4. Equinox, baby. Definitely the hardest of her abilities to learn, but goddamn it's good. Also, mastering starcall means you can get that slow reliably when you're being chased.
  5. Yeah... That's just the role, though. Same thing happens to every support who's trying to save a moron who doesn't know where the safe zone is.
  6. If they're close, easy starcalls. More starcalls = more healing. Besides, tanks usually don't need the healing, the squishies do.
  7. Learn. Them. Starcalls. Hitting multiple people can easily bring you to full even from low health if you have even a little AP.
  8. Don't rank q first. You get >50% of q's power by ranking w. And by 10 when you start actually ranking it, you should have bought some mp5 like every other mage support. And w's health cost is also reduced by getting good at q, which is a low cost since it's rank 1 but still quite powerful in terms of self-healing.
  9. RIP. Made room for more health healing though.
  10. If you aren't healing, you aren't doing anything else anyway. Just heal the potatos until they guess something right.
  11. Again, true for pretty much every support (except very tanky ones.) She still has better escape than Sona.
  12. Not a huge loss. It's also MUCH harder to kill your carry than you if you're doing your job well, so that situation is rare.
  13. Yeah, but the insane amount of extra healing way more than makes up for that. Old raka was frankly shit at keeping people alive compared to most other supports. The mr was low, and the armor was a short duration on a looooooooooooooooong cooldown. 80% of the time, you just slowed them down, but didn't stop them.

In general, if you don't do well with a champion after a few games, it might just mean you haven't learned them yet. If you're not able to land Q's, that's why she's weak. If a champion was doing well without landing abilities, they're overpowered. Soraka's biggest weakness, I think, is that there are a ton of noob traps on her - especially item 3083 and item 3065. Get those and you become 100% worthless because your heals are tiny due to lack of ap and your self-healing is nonexistent. Really, the fun is that your healing is beyond compare - several times higher than the next best. Q heals you for most/all of your health bar, especially if you hit multiple targets. W is not only the largest non-ultimate heal per-cast, it has the shortest cooldown on one too - and the health cost is easily negated if you build ap and avoid health. And r is the biggest heal, and it removes grievous wounds! Not even ignite can stop you! All of this while maintaining a decent amount of peel with her Equinox and the slow on her Starcall, which is exceedingly easy to land on someone who's chasing - close and going in a straight line. And if they swerved... good job, you peeled. I started maining her since the rework - her kit is almost exactly the "dream kit" I imagined long ago. Health donation + insane self-healing by fighting your opponents.

I will disagree on this one. The health cost on her W is a huge drawback to playing her over a lot of other champions. Having to hurt yourself to heal is so painful, especially when you consider that a lot of other champions can actually sustain their lane easier than Soraka solely because she doesn't sustain her lane. Soraka instead converts her health to her ally's health. I would prefer to straight up heal. Honestly, the lower cooldown heal becomes a lot less relevant when it costs a large amount of your health per cast. It hurts too much, and using her Q to heal up doesn't help with it, since it will drain your mana quite hard. The fact that she has less utility to offer her team-mates and has a weak laning phase is just the nail in the coffin.

On a positive note, though, her Equinox is hilariously effective against assassins (who are popular in solo-Q). Especially Katarina. Stops her ultimate immediately.

If you're building ap and avoiding health, the cost is nowhere near the heal amount. And your ability to self-heal with q FAR exceeds the cost of casting w on cooldown - if you land it, that is. 10% of a tiny health pool is just enough to make you use your q occasionally. At level 9, if you've built NO ap (and you probably should have at least a little from runes/masteries/items) and built a sighstone while avoiding all other health items, you heal for 240 for a cost of 120.5 health... 2 AP is enough to heal for twice as much as you spend. Still a net healing amount. And I can't stress how important ap is. More ap not only means your heal is better (thereby increasing the ratio), it also increases your ability to heal yourself, which in a way reduces the cost. You sort of get exponentially more powerful from ap. Your ult also gives you more juice on top of it's own healing, so it's very nice for those clutch moments - and, also even more health to yourself for more healing. I find laning phase to be a breeze, since I can automatically win exchanges by vastly outhealing the enemy support's damage - and once there's fighting, there are easy starcalls.

There are a few problems with what you have said.

Firstly, I am going to focus on Soraka at level 11, with only HP item being a sightstone.

With this in mind, you will end up having 1537 HP. This makes your W cost 154 HP per cast, but restores 240 HP (with a descent AP ratio). When you land your Q, considering you are at around 60% HP heals for 117 HP. This means you are a lot less likely to be able to use your heal often, and will instead use it based on your Q's cooldown, which is quite long and quite dodge-able for any opponent paying much attention. You are very unlikely to actually win trades unless your opponent is unable to dodge even the easiest of skillshots. If you are winning because they don't know how to dodge, then you would not only win, but crush lane with any other support.

Honestly, mid lane Soraka is stronger than support Soraka because of the higher AP ratios and her weakness in lane. She doesn't offer much to her ADC against any realistic opponent. Landing your Q's is about as hard as landing Swain's Nevermove or Veigar's Event Horizon. She can't fight against all-in lanes very easily, needing to use her Equinox against the initiation, but having the enemy continue to punish your lane. Poke lanes can poke out Soraka much easier than your ADC regardless, and trying to land your Q gets you hit more often.

At close range it becomes VERY fast - in melee range it's almost instant. Part of mastering it is to learn to fire it as close to yourself as possible without just missing it. Like I said - I land q's more often than not, especially once teamfights happen. It's not easy, but it's definitely learnable. The problem with mid Soraka is that she can't really apply pressure too well because she's too gankable in a lane with multiple avenues of ganking, so she can't stop them from roaming. I had more success with her top than mid, since roaming is done by tp, so it's easier. Poke lanes are actually where she's strongest. Stand behind the adc so that they have to poke them, heal them when they drop, and if item 3096 isn't healing you fast enough, drop in front for just a second in-between cd's and starcall 'em. It's true that it's more effective to poke Soraka than the adc, but you also don't have to put yourself in harm's way to be effective.

Problem with that, is that running THAT close to the enemy as Soraka at ~ half health is damn near suicide. Any type of engage on the enemy team (not hard) goes straight to a kill for them. Soraka just doesn't have much pressure, and as a support, you are needed just to protect your ADC and pressure the opponent while your lane partner farms up. If you can't pressure much, your ADC will be less effective. In poke lanes, staying back just to heal your ADC almost surrenders the lane. Your ADC will receive very little farm if you are playing a heal bot with limited capabilities. There are other heals that can heal for large amounts, don't drain the caster of life and have other effects attached to them.

All in all, support Soraka is weak in lane due to her low lane pressure and limited peel for her ADC against enemies inevitably jumping on them. Her heal hurts her a lot, and her Q requires her to enter kill range to land reliably, otherwise it is weak and drains mana very quickly. I like her E a lot though. Kinda under-rated ability.

Drackolus1 votes

You don't need to get that close. Once a fight starts, targets tend to move less. Your adc gets to farm just fine while you heal them up, and if they aren't just afk farming and throwing their own poke... the idea is that it becomes a 1v0, because your adc gets to poke while you erase all the damage. Works just fine. Her peel isn't the STRONGEST, but it's not the worst either (lookin' at you Sona). It's on-par with other supports. Her heal does take some health, but not as much as she gets back with q. I'm not just throwing ideas around either - I've mained her since the rework and never had a hard time. Except when I was out of it and missing all my abilities. It happens to everyone. Or when I was doing silly things like building item 3083 and item 3065.

If you are talking about 2v2 fights in the bot lane, then your ADC being the target and recipient of any skillshots and CC the enemy has isn't ideal. It can't be helped, so healing them certainly helps. She has very little pressure on her lane, and against poke comps, healing up the poke sure helps. But you are gravely limited in your capabilities in doing so, so you do need your Q to try and heal yourself aswell. If you take poke trying to land your Q, then you lose the exchange.

A lot of popular supports, such as Thresh, Leona, Nami, Blitzacrank, Morgana and Annie are all very strong against you. They can straight engage on your ADC (or you. But positioning is a thing with Soraka) and cause serious hell. You can't fight their engages and expect that you won't lose a player. You need to disengage and leave, probably hug close to tower. Then you need to heal them up, and try to throw Q's out and near max range to avoid getting jumped on yourself. She is really weak in lane.

Against poke lanes, she's surely stronger. But not to the point that you might suspect. There are not a huge amount of popular poke supports (I think Zyra is the most popular right now. Karma is getting a mini-rework). When fighting these types of champions, you can heal your ADC from the damage, and use your Q a lot closer than you could against the All-in lane (less threat of getting rekt), so you can heal easier. It seems pretty descent. But you are limited to the cooldown of landing your Q's for healing, and don't offer a lot more to that lane. To be fair, though, if your aim is solely to counter their lane, then it can be a pretty descent pick. I think that shielding champions, such as Janna would be strong aswell, and bring more to their team, but if you want to counter lane as hard as possible, then it's good. I would just prefer my supports to be more versatile and be strong at more than just surviving lane.

Drackolus1 votes

Dunno man. Unless it's a very solid engage like a jinx/thresh hook+trap+flay+another hook that I didn't inturrupt with e (which, let's be real, if you didn't pick Annie and can instagib the enemy adc, that's a kill, period.), Equinox prevents enough damage combined with the healing-per-second output of my q and w to win most fights. When my adc decides to engage, I back them up and we win the fight. There are counters, sure... but there's nothing skill, which comes from practice, can't beat. Except for the adc being afk. That's a toughie.

I think I would play her sometimes if it wasn't for Morellonomicon being a pretty common item. Grievious wounds that constantly get reapplied make me sad.

Reaper Soraka1 votes

I love her Silence and healing abilities. A lot of other supports underestimate how tanky your adc can be when you trade exhausts, but you're able to heal through all of their damage early on. Equinox is also great for when Leonas/Thresh/Kat/LB/Zed/liss/etc decide to go in on your team, just silence under their target. Global heal can keep us from falling behind little bit, and q helps us recover from some light auto-attack trading. (The bananas still hit pretty hard at a good range.)

Der Lindwurm1 votes

She's not the rockstar she used to be, but I've been playing her more than anyone else lately.

Her Q's ability to hit targets behind minions is strong in early laning. Her ability to keep the ADC (and other teammates later on) alive and in the fight is still unparalleled. You just have to be really careful since you can't heal yourself anymore (well, you can, but not with your W like you could before) and you'll be targeted when they realize they can kill you much more easily than your ADC while you're there.

You can look up my Soraka games if you like.

I pick her against poke and long games and only if we have a tank that can do damage at the same time. Like Nasus for example, the enemy team is forced to focus the massive tank and I can just heal him while also staying out of the way because assassins are not always able to get to me. I build warmogs because I can regenerate faster and then I build what my team needs.

Nidalee Nasus Kayle Soraka KogMaw Jinx Corki Ezreal

Those 4 adc's work well and the other 4 are people to put on a team to help Soraka. Soraka should only be picked for specific reasons, not just because you want to play her or because of another reason that doesn't make sense. She takes her own health to heal and that only makes logical sense because it prevents constantly healing and stacking a tear, imagine if she did not take health? I would stack a rod, a tear and a frozen heart and heal for days with a 1.6 second CDR.

EDIT Also, Soraka is a backline support. You're team should be defending her and she should not always be putting pressure in the lane if she is up against soraka, karma, thresh, Blitz and other aggressive champions. She is NOT suppose to be anywhere near the front line or anywhere near being caught or even flashed and attempt is made to catch her.
