People learning counters to stuff like Akali, Kai'Sa, and Aatrox

Crazy pocket picks.

Ridiculous base races.

Aftershock/Grasp mages.

An actual mix of different comps and ideas instead of "tanks mashing heads while hyper carries spray at the tanks".

I'm glad to say that Riot's Worlds changes made for a really exciting event this year. Sure, it's in Korea so I end up passing out before all the matches are done at like 4 in the morning, but for what I can stand to watch before sleep takes over, it's hype as hell. I kinda wish enchanters were relevant at this tournament, but outside of that this is pretty hype. Most of the changes you guys made really panned out.

And? The real game that we all play was ruined, so pros can do more exciting show. It's the normal playerbase that sustains the game. Without it all these "pros" will have to work as clerks or shop assistants... It's not normal to ruin the game, so you can have interesting pro meta, if you ask me. Add all the reworks fiasco, and runes and masteries, and the client that is going from bad to worse state, all the problems with bots ruining TT and ARAM games. GJ, RITO, you made 1 good worlds, too bad that everything else sucks.

Imperial Pandaa6 votes

This is your opinion, and that is their's.

We get this spiel every year whenever something changes. Jungle item changes forcing smite to be taken "Ruined the game!". Plants added to the game, "Game is ruined!". Runes Reforged, "Busted!". Point is not everyone is going to be happy with changes. Did they change things too quickly with patches this year? Yeah, I think so. Little time to adapt and use new things.

Glaricion1 votes

What are the arguments against plants?

I've seen people just blankly state they don't like them, but never a reason.

They seem to be a fun little addition that makes the map feel like an actual place.

FunkyMonkey36964 votes

it is one of those things that adds to the ranged advantage. Especially blast cone. A range champion chasing a melee one can pop it from range negating the escape. A melee champ cannot pop it without being knocked away in a direction, range champs can.

GayFluffyUnicorn3 votes

Those changes were objectively bad. The plants give nothing of value to the game other than frustration and semi RNG bullshit.

You guys keep railing on pro play, but pro play made League the phenomenon it is in the first place. IWillDominate, Scarra, QTPie, Faker, Doublelift, Dopa, LS...there's a ton of long standing names that create parts of the backbone of League's culture that are relevant BECAUSE pro play exists. The popularity that this game garnered because of its competitive showing is the reason it's big enough of a game for it to be this relevant a decade later, but all guys like you want is for Riot to outright rip the pro scene from the ground and toss it in the trash for the sake of your ARAMs?

If you wanna play a game like Fortnite, where their pro scene is so lame that freaking Drama Alert had a better event than the game's creators, play a game like Fortnite.

I want to play a version of League that doesn't suck cocks. Unfortunately, an abundance of catering to the fat and out of shape nerds who play professionally has made that impossible.

Funny you bring up Fortnite, a game that has consistently been outperforming League since release.

Daily reminder that League is so bad that Dyrus almost killed himself due to how miserable playing it every day is.

  1. Dyrus made a new video explaining that the game isn't the problem, the community playing it is.

  2. Fortnite outperforms League on the context that it's new, it's meme fodder, and it has all the kiddies playing it since it's free. Imagine if Black Ops 4 was free? The game's regularly neck and neck with Fortnite on Twitch and it's a retail game. Fortnite's just casual fodder that has people enamored. I heavily doubt how strong it'll be as it runs its course.

  3. If you want to play a version of League that's good, you should just play League. I know people like to put on the nostalgia goggles but dodge spam Jax was NOT the hay day of League of Legends. No amount of loony juice is gonna change that. Most of the negative play experience comes from others in the community being obnoxious, anyway.

You're straight up lying my man. The community, or more accurately, the fact that he has to rely on four other people while playing "boring" (his words) tanks to succeed is indeed one reason he outlined, but he also indicated the current patches or not fun and that maybe a patch that makes the game fun again could draw him back more regularly, but that hasn't happened yet.

It isn't "new", the BR mode alone has been out for like a year and has consistently outperformed League since that time and has become a mainstream cultural phenomenon that League never was. It isn't even comparable my man. You're straight up being delusional.

And I don't even fucking like Fortnite.

Nice strawman my man, but no, the game sucks balls right now, and part of that is due to "dude Worlds".

Hey let's buff a 53% win rate in diamond+ ADC so people pick him at Worlds. Let's put Shen and Sejuani in the dumpster so people don't pick them at Worlds.

People who value the experiencing of watching fat nerds play the game over actually playing it are killing this game. =(

To add to this: Pro play is always going to be the "best" League of Legends. It's the thing players are supposed to aspire to and the thing that players should want to emulate. It's also the thing that will stick around long after the casual player leaves because his friends are playing something else.

Rather than just go "game sux i h8 it", people should be going "Holy shit worlds got me fired up I wanna get better now". It should be the time of not just entertainment but LEARNING. Aatrox fucking up your top lane? Time to learn Klepto Viktor. Kai'sa making your games a chore? Heimerdinger's here waiting for you. Trying to deal with mobile champs? Twin Shadows Glacial is gonna ruin their day.

It's actually pretty sad that so many people are against pro-centric (or at least extra high elo) balance. There is some fascinating things that can happen when you let the meta flourish and the trickle down effect is real.

I and most people do not aspire to be one of a handful of fat neckbeards with sweat caking our shirts under our manboobs pretending to be athletes.

High elo, diamond 1+ balancing is one thing. That is something someone who doesn't literally want to make League their job can aspire to.

I don't want to make this game my job. Most people don't.

There is nothing competitive about this game for the casual player. And even the ones in masters+ because YOU CANNOT COMPARE FIVE PEOPLE PLAYING 16 hours+ A DAY TO FIVE RANDOMS THROWN TOGETHER EVERY OTHER GAME. NemeBro is completely right, the game sucks massive dick and is so shitty and unfun to play just for the sake of being "competitve". Why is the jungle so overbearing? Why did we lose all vision? Why are half the reworks shoehorned into being good in a 5 man premade setup? Why are tanks broken as it is? Why is baron broken as it is? Oh yeah for the sake of competitive. Why are urgot and aatrox what they are? Ah yeah so you can actully have a laning phase against all the ranged cancer in toplane and for what? As a sorry excuse to never balance the game.

3TWarrior3 votes

except it has almost universally been agreed that professional play is NOTHING LIKE solo play. for instance, you play with ONE TEAM, a team you practice with for months, years even

you also have headsets, the best equipment your sponsors can buy, personal trainers, in-depth information on what your opponents have been doing, YOU GET PAYED TO PLAY AND WIN LEAGUE ,

if you want to know how bad it is, most of the top streamers in the game, high elo/division/skill or not, have stated that they would have quit the game if they weren't getting payed to do it and a lot have stopped streaming the game to play it because they miss the addictive previous seasons

chipndip11 votes

Top streamers of the game have been streaming one game ad infinitum for years. People burn out. Just how it is. Personally I play other games on the side so I have something else to look forward to instead of solely League. Someone that streams big time doesn't always have that luxury, and thus they burn out when they're essentially working everyday for long hours with no breaks, dealing with a toxic community and a toxic chat that wants nothing but a spicy moment, whether that's their downfall or not. Like, Gbay99's on record screaming suicidal thoughts over his performance in-game and the fact that his chat's constantly flaming him for being bad. You can't blame the game for the community's bullshit. The community's a bigger grievance to its own players than the game's going to be.

Outside of that point, you're right: Pros communicate, and we don't. A better point to make than "Balance the game around solo queue", because that's both impossible and going in the wrong direction, would be to inquire for voice chat in solo queue. The less divide between pro play and solo queue, the less drastic the balancing decisions between them. It's a better goal to strive for.

3TWarrior2 votes

riot tried this: it was called Flex Queue and the players have not approved

they tried it previously with 3 v 3 and 5 v 5 teams. It was inconsistent and queue times were crazy bad because people want to test their skill as an INDIVIDUAL in solo queue

Faker, literally called "the god of mid lane" got famous for consistently being the #1 player in challenger...

let's say we put a team together of Faker and several famous streamers. They would likely crush anyone but a professional team. The reason why? Professional LoL is not the same game as League of Legends, despite how Riot attempts to mask it

Players aspire to be like other famous players because they want to be renowned. Most teams don't even have stated requirements for how to get on them that I'm aware of and of course, the average league player is not going to have $20,000 to pay the entrance fee for a chance to win $100,000 each

None of this has anything to do with what I said.

Solo queue works because it's McDonald's. It's a fast and easy way to get a relatively decent League experience. It's not the good stuff, but it's "good enough". Adding voice comms to Solo queue would upgrade this McDonald's into, eh, Sonic or Whataburger or Wendy's.

3v3, 5v5, and Flex Queue didn't add comms to solo queue so that isn't really the same thing.

3TWarrior1 votes

it does apply. professional play and even group play is completely different from how the game was intended. lately, they've started trying to mimic professional play, but every attempt at it has failed

even if they put in voice chat, what are the odds that players will not mute the game because it ends up like first person shooters where younger gamers start screaming into the mic while playing additional music in the background?

it's also next to impossible to "filter" voice chat

I want voice chat in solos as much as the next person, but as we inevitably remember, it's chaos

I also have no idea where your "mcdonalds" comparison is coming from because SOLO QUEUE is the ORIGINAL experience and is what gave this game its start...

Also twin+glacial is bad against mobile champs. Mobile champs have dashes/blinks. Slows affect them the least.

1.) Easy proc against melee with Q+Auto 2.) Lets you farm up hexcore upgrades quickly. 3.) Is incredibly hard to trade with if you're melee due to range, speedboost and shield. 4.) Viktor can go things like IBG to make it even more frustrating to deal with.

Also Glacial can be good against mobile considering it's both a tracking reveal as well as having an absurdly massive slow field.

Put it in a casual player's perspective: I DON'T FIND KLEPTO VIKTOR FUN. I want to play what I want to play, and when certain things totally invalidate my ability to play that, it makes the game unfun for me. I still play because the fun I get from playing the things I like are still there but the presence of that invalidating thing is like a party pooper for me whether or not I win. If I win, I don't get to do the stuff I enjoyed, I likely got carried. If I lost, it was even more horrible because I don't even get the consolation of winning as a "payback to the metasheep douche for ruining my game" in a sense.

For instance, Yi vs the tank meta pre-runes reforged. Rageblade on-hit existed but too expensive, took too long to stack lategame, while "lategame" was shiv/ie for ADC. Didn't really kill tanks that hard either because conqueror didn't exist. Crit build became meta to abuse the cheap crit power spikes to one shot ADC and provide huge teamfight aoe damage.

But Yi was still fun to play for me. When I had to deal with a tank heavy comp, it made the game hell because I got fucked no matter what I did. Couldn't duel them, couldn't teamfight, couldn't outscale, and the one person I could assassinate has 4 shields on him. This part was frustrating. But assassinating lonely squishies? I still did that. Team wiping a squishy team comp? Still did that. Pentakills? Occasionally still possible and these things that I found enjoyable kept me from quitting my main. Doesn't stop me from being salty about the meta when it sucks for me but what LoL player isn't salty?

That said, meta's somewhat alright for my champ right now at my level of play so I'm not feeling salty about the meta. But I can see where the frustrated people are coming from. We can only adapt so much when we only enjoy certain things (like how Cowsep finally dropped the on-hit build for crit build after a long period of saltiness about the S7 meta). True, if we adapted more, we would probably win more. But ultimately, this game is about fun for some people, and if the cost to win a game takes that fun away, players are going to quit because what they played for no longer exists.

So...don't play Klepto Viktor?

Beyond that though, I think this kind of attitude toward different builds/runes is the exact kind of thing that stifles the meta more than Riot ever could. So Klepto Viktor is best in show. Fine. It doesn't mean you can't play Viktor mid with Aery, which people still do. Yeah, Klepto is technically better, but Aery is like a tiny percentile worse than Klepto. It's not like the old days where you HAD to go damage tree Viktor or else you were legitimately trolling.

But we should encourage new builds. We should encourage new things. Demanding that a playstyle isn't legitimate because you don't find it fun would be like me saying that on-hit guinsoo Yi should be gotten rid of because Yi should only be building crit hyperscaling builds, not meme 1-2 item spike on-hits.

Most of all though, people keep forgetting that if you're good, you can climb with ANYTHING. There are players who know their champ so well they hit high diamond/masters playing literally their best picks. We have a worlds where a Heimer player is so fucking good at his champ it's pulling respect bans. If you need to use meta to climb, that doesn't mean the game is in such a terrible state you can't climb with anything. It means you're simply not good enough and need the extra boost a meta/tier 1 pick has. There's no shame in admitting that, but it's not Riot's fault you can't be good enough to hit Diamond with AP Varus.

It's not me not encouraging people to not play Klepto Viktor. It just means, I myself don't want to play Klepto Viktor even if it means I have to get stomped in lane. The metasheep can go play it for all they want. It just leaves me no choice but to get wrecked by Aatrox and find some other way to win like grouping or just PvE the entire game (if I'm playing an easily bullied laner). When it's just mild, it's playable except you have to give up some of your lane and accept being a little behind but you also get situations like pre-nerf Aatrox who basically said "you don't get to lane today, go afk under turret" which was totally unfun. In a sense, I'm somewhat agreeing with Hashinshin which kinda scares me. I played Yi through his S7 weak point. I don't play to climb, I don't even play ranked. But there are things that definitely make the game not fun for me - sometimes they're tolerable but other times they feel totally bullshit.

flibitydoo17 votes

No, it worked in the earlier seasons because they actually did balance things for soloQ.

A long time ago (you should know this if you've been here for a while since it happened around season 3/4) is they changed darius ult. It no longer fully reset on kill. It was made to semi-reset, as in a successful dunk execute would give a 20s window to recast. Darius was not a competitive champion in any form during those seasons. His kite-ability and only real strength being his early game dominance weren't enough to justify him over someone like rumble who dominated early and scaled into teamfights. The change was in essence, purely because of soloQ. The forums (when they weren't boards) constantly complained about the holy trinity of soloQ top lane which was jax/riven/darius at the time and darius was considered the worst of the bunch. There were a lot of changes riot did back then, actually responding to their playerbase about problems the game had. That has stopped.

Right now, sure, worlds is great. But a big reason why Riot wants worlds to be be great is it drawns in people to play the game.

And then they play the game. And it's awful. And then they move on to something else.

What's the point of hooking them in if they won't stick?

GayFluffyUnicorn8 votes

^^^^^^^^^^^ Ten thousand times this.

All for the sake of being "competitive" and "viewing experience" and for what? For losing the playerbase. Western servers are basically dead. In just three years NA dropped from 3,5 million ranked players to barely a million. EUW from nearly 5 to 2,5 million. And i guarantee u half of the remaining numbers are the people who play ten games promos and then never touch ranked again. Unfortunately rankeds are the only numbers available to us but also the most accurate because when league was great EVERYONE played ranked. Noone gave a shit about normals or whatever. The game WAS competitive and skillbased in soloQ which drew in MILLIONS of people making it the biggest game ever.

And riot throws all this overboard for the Esport scene. 300k people watching fnc vs edg at worlds. WHAT A SHAME. Numbers your average EU LCS game used to reach. Oh wait we have 3 billion chinese people who were watching the match so its okay.

For Oct 10th 2015, we get 1.679 mil active ranked players. And 1.7mil in Oct 20th.

Like cmon... you all are gobbling up straight lies lmao. "barely 1 mil anymore btw"

I said that most sites do not keep data older than late season 5...isn't that exactly what I just said?

we're in season 8...roll back 3 years, season 5, yet nothing older than that

also, I don't read that language and it only loads each date page by page instead of as a flow chart...

I agree it is fun and thrilling to watch. But it is worst season to play, shortest and most onesided games ever, fighters and assassins dominating all lanes, too much damage, snowballing is out of control, overbuffed offensive spells and items, overnerfed defensive spells and items. Games in soloQ are 95% time obnoxious stomps and enchanters can't do shit.

Yup, balancing the game as a tv show definitely paid off in entertainment value.

World's has been fun, but it also serves to validate all the pro-centric decisions this season that made the game far less enjoyable to play. Expect to see that dialed up to 11 in the upcoming seasons. On a good day Riot is out of touch with the experiences of the bottom 98.5% of ranked players. You think they won't be infinitely worse after a big payoff from World's?

Yeah, its extremly boring to play if you aren't playing an oneshoot champion, so much frontline damage and teamfights lasts like 1 second before someone with an alpha strike (for example) kills you. If you aren't in the feed team its like why im going to play the rest of the game if we don't have the right team comp or the right overpowered champions just to get oneshooted by the other team LOL.

Without doubt the best teamfight (and probably game) that i enjoyed the most in this season was one when both teams teamfighted 5v5 on river at level 1, it lasted at least 12-14 seconds

Lols that's just sad, the only way to get a teamfight to last a decent amount of time is for everyone to have no completed items and only 1 ability. I SMELL A NEW GAMEMODE!!! ROFL.
