What are Riven's favprable/outplayable matchups?

AMADEUSdotEXE··2 votes·675 views

I've been intentionally counterpicking myself lately (sounds dumb but i want to learn as much as i can in each game) and from what i can tell Riven vs. : Teemo - Shield Blind, dont trade he hurts a lot more than i remembered and farm under tower for what i can and hope he isnt a bastard and harass me under tower. Ask for frequenet ganks and build mr. Trynd - Try to snowball lane early, once he gets rageblade/shiv play safe and ask for ganks if still laning. Must beat him pre-6. Garen - Cry (help please xD) Darius - Ask for ganks, play safe, shield q? Or can riven beat him now early? Pantheon - (fuck Pantheon, sorry i hate him personally) but shield his q, play safe, DONT COUNTER HARASS early, ask for ganks, and dont die to him or he'll be able to poke and dive me effortlessly by level 5-6. Dont pick riven into pantheon. Gangplank - Shield q early, stomp his ass at 6, ask for ganks. Jax - Stomp his ass early (still or no?), ask for ganks after he gets rageblade (Need more help on this matchup) Illaoi - Extremely difficult (personally) but winnable? Juke her q with e and try to shield damage of other tentacles if possible. Poking her early is a lot easier before 6. Ekko - Idfk

ANYWAYS, can i get some advice on her matchups? Or can someone fill me in on her more favorable, easier matchups? Please and thank you!

Poppy Shield absorbs most of your burst throughout lane phase W makes it so you either won't be able to use your 3rd q or E 1.5s stun will screw you chances of killing carries come mid game Ult will either peel heavy for her carries or stun you long enough to get setup for her 1.5s stun

To deal with this you need to

  1. Fight her when her shield is down. Poppy shield takes 16s lvl 1 to recharge.
  2. Use your e to stop the w from eating your third q. You'll still get your shield, but you'll simply stay in place.
  3. Avoid walls/structures at all times or use your e to change your direction as she slides towards you.
  4. Get armor pen early as the Poppy will likely rush armor to deal with your burst.

So pretty much when she presses w dont push anything? Should i try to harass her at all? Also mid game should i just try to keep my distance from her when grouping or hope for my team to deal with her..

I updated the post to give you some tips. Mid game you should focus on how the Poppy is playing. If the poppy is ahead you may want to play as a peeler for your team, or wait for Poppy to move away from her back line. If you're ahead of the poppy the only thing you really have to be afraid of is her stun. Her stun (via wall collision) will make you go from 100-0 with likely 70 of that being from her burst lol.

Expect to see more Poppy soon. Especially in top lane as she is sleeper OP right now (Sitting at Elise level WR in both top and jungle lol)

Alright thank you! So i'm definitely going to rush cleaver over hydra vs poppy then. And the Using the shield to stop the 3rd q interruption was very helpful.

She has an easy time with anyone as long as you really know what you are doing. In all honesty none of her matchups are clear in how they will go. The more experienced you are, the easier the matchups are. I could go into detail, but the effort in that, it's too much.

Does that include vs Tryndamere/Darius/Tahm? I've been destroyed by just about every darius i've fought as her and tahm was prretty painful come 6. And I've been watching alot of BoxBox and i still havent really seen him actually beat a Trynd top... Unless he's just misplaying it or something im not sure what to do in those.

Against Tryndamere, you obviously need to trade early. Even when he hits six, you can usually do more damage than him. If you go in a fight him off right away, he can't do much. If you force him to ult when you still have plenty of health left, you just stun him, use your dash as a shield, and eventually the ult goes away. As long as you are careful in trades and don't take too many auto attacks from minions, you should be fine.

Against Darius, you need to do some heavy outplaying. The biggest thing against Darius is dodging his Q. His Q has a radius around him, but not on him. You can dash away to dodge it, but if you are close to him, actually dash into him, then stun him. He wont get his passive stacks on you, and you should end up outtrading him.

Against Tahm, you need to bait his E, and fight him after he has used his W. In lane, he will likely attempt to harass you by throwing minions at you with his W. Dodge them then engage while W is on it's fairly long cd. Whenever it is that he happens to use his E, that is when you have your biggest chance of killing him. If you can, wait out the shield, otherwise, just dash on him and stun him, then start beating him down. His E is the main reason he is so hard to kill, so baiting it out of him to kill him is important. Tahms will sometimes use their E to prevent damage from the end of a combo. I recommend as Riven to dash on him after he has used his W, stun him, you your Q once or twice, then wait half a second. The Tahm will predict that you will finish the combo, and be scared, so he will activate his E. Then you finish your Q, get your stun as soon as you can, and then you will have outtraded him.

And always remember to use auto attacks between every ability. If you don't use your aa cancelling, you are actually a garbage champion.

Hope this helps!

Ohhh, I feel pretty stupid, I've been using E to engage on Tryndamere instead of gtfo when he ults. And i try to snowball the lane as early as i can if i can.

Wait hold on can you explain the whole using her E to dash into Darius' Decimate to prevent stacks? Because i couldve sworn the lant time i fought him i dashed into his Q to shield it and i still was given one... But i will definitely try that if he isnt banned when i play her!

Never really thought to actually engage on him when he uses his w to eat minions! ALright thank you! Can she actually shield his devour though? I've seen BoxBox do it a couple times if that "bug" hasnt been fixed or whatever it is. If so should i use it for that? Thanks

I'm getting to bed, I might try and answer the rest of your questions tomorrow, but for now I'll say this: the play against Darius where you dash into his Q is incredibly difficult to do with how hit boxes in league work. Rivens dash moves her a specific distance, and that location that you end up at has to be right on top of Darius when his q goes off in order for it to work. It wouldn't be too bad if hit boxes weren't dumb, but as they are its arguably on of the most difficult one button tricks to pull off.

Quinn Vault off of Riven DURING her second Q cast. - In DURING her second Q cast, Riven won't be able to W stun you, and chain the cc from the third Q cast. Riven will also not have enough dashes (3rd Q and E) to get to you. Harass Riven harder than a Teemo harasses a Nasus using your range and Q. Use W to detect ganks, especially when the Riven starts playing passive all of the sudden.

Jeez Riven - Quinn sounds tough as hell....

It's probably one of if not her worst matchup, E just pretty much negates any attempt at gap closing, if you flash W you might be able to get some decent damage off but it's super risky, I played this matchup as Quinn before her rework and there wasn't really anything the Riven could do in lane.

As a Jax main I can tell you that once he gets Rageblade and he is not too far behind there is no way you can beat him. However Riven stomps him really hard early game.

So i pretty much need to snowball as much as i can before he gets that item and then roam or splitpush?

The Bíg Ticket1 votes

Yes you are not gonna beat him after level 11 anyway unless you are way ahead. What you can do at level 1 is go on him with Q wait for him to use E and disengage, go back in and knock him up with your 3rd Q. You will have won the trade and he won't have E for 18 seconds so you can land a full combo on him or zone him from the minions. This should give you a heavy advantage in lane.

She does pretty well vs Vlad, Zed, Gangplank, Yasuo, Irelia, Nasus, Gnar and Shen
