Several mages and supports need to have their mana costs/maximum mana/etc. adjusted
I think when Riot brought the mana regen and mana changes, they didn't properly test how every mage would do with said changes. Several of our mid-laners have suffered massively because they burn out too damn often and simply get out-performed by others because they were forgotten.
The big problem is that a lot of these mages can never make the Mana Font passive from Athene's Unholy Grail worthwhile. They simply don't get a large enough maximum mana pool, and cannot allocate space to compensate for it with a Tear or Rod of Ages without completely gimping themselves. Thus they turn to double Morellonomicons.
Cases in point:
- 130 mana on her E and 90 mana on her Q are absolutely brutal, especially since she's supposed to spam/harass with them. Additionally, her maximum mana tops out at 1184, which is not enough to make Mana Font worth it. She cannot effectively use Tear of the Goddess because of her longer cooldowns, and Rod of Ages is too expensive for her both in cost and slot when she needs as much AP as possible to burst down enemies and make stronger shields.
- As good as Nami is, she has the same problem: 130 mana cost on her heal at level 5, and a bad maximum mana pool. Since she's a support, Archangel's Staff is basically a "no" in most cases, so she remains stuck at her 1108 maximum mana (again, ineffective Mana Font). And unless she spams her healing constantly, teammates WILL die (and she'll get blamed at lower tiers).
- Same problem as Lux: highly spammy skills, but very costly. 90 mana on his Q, 110 mana on his E, only 1184 maximum mana. Ouch. Mana Font again doesn't cut it. And again, he wants pure AP, so he can't afford to allocate for Tear of the Goddess or Rod of Ages. He can only mitigate it a bit with Lich Bane.
I think the issue here is that on Grail, the Mana Font passive isn't effective enough to compensate for the item's 20% CDR. Because you're spamming, it can't keep up, and thus you will burn out and not recover fast enough, especially with Grail only giving +50% base mana regen.
Some people might say these high costs and lower-sized maximum pools are meant to mana-gate these Champions, but I disagree with the notion. Yes, mana gates are supposed to exist to prevent abuse on some Champions, but aren't those gates only meant to be for early/mid game? Do they still have to hugely gate you late-game? I don't think so. Riot claimed the problem from S4 was that you made mana meaningless by mid-game. While I don't disagree with that part, I think that LATE GAME, mana should be nearly meaningless.
But lastly, why am I really unhappy these mages/supports haven't been compensated/adjusted? Those extreme mana costs simply eliminate the ability to actually make decisions. It's like getting mana-burned by an enemy: The decisions simply aren't there anymore because you can't support the cost.
TL;DR? - Nope, read it.
