Aatrox just isn't the same

fudgecakeyhead··44 votes·11,404 views

He just feels incomplete without the calm demeanor of an ancient warrior who fuels on blood. Now he's a guy yelling while being another riven. Nobody asked for this... It's a travesty. He's less of a fighter who triumphs over long battles and more of someone who Riven mains play when their champ is banned.

I'll say it again: if you defend this, you also defend your main getting deleted from the game forever and replaced by another champion. I'm not an Aatrox main and never liked the champion but this is the worst rework Riot has ever done.

You've never liked Aatrox, you never played his new one... and you think its the worst remake ever done.

This is all pure hysteria from the community. The rage has spread and people have tossed all signs of logic out of the window completely.

Riot has said this is going to be the largest-scale rework of any champion and that he was going to get reworked from the ground-up.

People want to just complain right now. Thats all. Just complain. You literally just said you didn't even like the champion. Why do you think they changed him? Many people didn't like him.

Many of these "Aatrox mains" only started playing him when they announced his rework. They picked an underplayed champion to feel special, nothing more.

They claim he's not the same.... THATS THE POINT That's what they said was going to happen. Why did they start playing him then? Because they wanted to have this shitshow that's happening right now. They want to feel like they have some authority over this champion.

They say hes a generic riven and want his old auto attack kit back... The amount of pure contradiction in this is rather much. XinZhao Tryndamere Volibear Udyr Tryndamere Nocturne Olaf Jax Are all generally the same auto attack fighters with varying mobility, cc, and sustain. They all play the whackem game where you just right click and hope you're lifesteal just outlasts everything else. Its been done to death yet the one time they re-release a champion that might take a page out of rivens kit, people want to label generic.

It's pretty unreal.

Yeah so why the hell does aatrox have to be the one to completely change into something he's not

He plays nothing like Riven, he's not mobile...I see what you mean but believe me.. A Riven player would be better off with Camille, Irelia or Fiora.

He plays a lot like Riven, really. No need to be in denial about the similarities.

Yeah because he totally resets his Aa like Riven with his Q.

Just because they're not exactly the same doesn't mean they aren't similar. Nice strawman tho.

Build attack speed on riven.... O wait you don't do that one riven, it's like she's not an auto based champion or something [slayer-jinx-unamused] Rip aatrox, forever remembered

Honestly the nail in the coffin for me is that his early game is horrible compared to now, and instead he is a late game scaler. Reworks are meant to keep elements of the core character, but they gutted his sustained combat with long CD's, made him want to stand far away from the enemy instead of right next to them, gutted his healing, pushed him completely away from being an AS oriented champ, replaced his amazing voice with something that I can barely understand the words of, and finally completely pushed him out of his niche as a strong early game champ who snowballs or falls off hard for something that is completely the opposite.

There is nothing about the new Aatrox that (as a fairly frequent Aatrox player) that makes me want to transition into playing him. I see nothing about old Aatrox that I enjoyed in the new Aatrox, and I am left wondering why I would even want to play the new Aatrox as an old Aatrox player. Katarina honestly feels closer to old Aatrox than the new one does, which is why I feel like this rework failed so hard.

Yeah man, it's almost like he got reworked or something

Scuffproof23 votes

This isn't a rework. This is Riot deleting a champion.

LoadedXan21 votes

It's a completely new champ, not a rework. GP, Swain, Yorick, they maintained general concepts like the pistol shot, oranges, cannon barrage, swain's life draining ult, his eye, the cc bind, Yorick's ghouls, they made them different but with the same theme. They didn't change who the champ WAS they just changed the kit. Aatrox now is like a complete rewrite. If I took off the name, and made the champ green, he could literally be a new darkin. NOTHING about old Aatrox is there, besides blood well, and that's completely different now, it's just tacked on to the blandest ult in the history of games. Damage, Speed, tack on Blood Well. It's almost like Riot never listened to the people who actually play Aatrox and just decided to make something to replace him that is just pieced together from other parts. 3 hit combo? That's an entire videogame stereotype. Dash?......and? it's a dash that does literally nothing else, super common, kinda useless, they could just let him move during Q but slowed, it would be the same, but they just were missing a slot for a skill. Oh Rhaast's healing but weaker. W? Unique but doesn't fit lore, isn't explained, and actually is counter to lore given he was supposed to be the chained/sealed, not the sealer. He's not Aatrox, he's a different champ, this could be AND IS an entire other darkin.

ModKnightsKemplar2 votes

Actually, I think you can make a strong argument that Swain was a bigger change. The only thing he kept was his drain ult, and it's in a much more restricted form. Aatrox get his resurrect in a much more restricted form, which is similar, but he also gets to keep his healing from damage.

Yeah, his abilites are a lot different; so are Swain's. Swain doesn't play much like the old one at all. But he still fits the theme and is really cool.

As I've stated in many places, both of my most played champs (Swain Taric ) have been reworked, and I'm a season 2 vet. I get what it's like to see a totally new kit and have to re-learn everything. Neither of those champs kept a single ability unchanged, either, and both got brand new mechanics that nobody asked for.

A lot of people who are very passionate about League and very passionate about Aatrox tested the changes. If you give them a chance, you might be surprised. He won't be the same champ, but he might still be something you enjoy if you're willing to try. That was true for both of mine; they aren't the same at all, but I still love playing both and I'm ultimately happy that they changed them.

LithiumWednesday4 votes

I mean, Swain is still a durable caster with an emphasis on punishing CC and damage; his W got split into two abilities, but the only real difference is his kit fits the League playstyle better now. I'm still mad about the Taric rework, but Riot has said they've been trying to move away from generalist champions.

Aatrox got switched from an AA-focused champ to an AD caster, a niche that Kayne/Rhaast already occupies (they've even both got spellvamp passives, although I'd argue Rhaast's is better for a caster). I mean, unless they want to make the Darkin entirely a group of AD casters--Varus already counts as that as much as an ADC can, I guess.

I don't think it would be so much of a problem if Riot hadn't spent the last few years phasing out melee autoattackers because they were functionally identical (that said, the only reason AD casters don't get the same treatment is because their abilities are technically different, even if almost every one of them has a variation on the same three skills).

Also, the visual aspect of the rework isn't great. I don't like how they took out the organic-looking sword (Darkin are supposed to be living weapons, right? The lore is a mess right now, but that's nothing new) and his war banner wings, and his model looks way too smooth, even for League's current style.

ModKnightsKemplar2 votes

I would argue that Aatrox is still a healing melee, even if he doesn't auto. It's not more different than Swain's change, on paper. And just like you comparing Aatrox to Rhaast, Swain got compared to Vlad on release. It's only after some time that many people realized there was enough different to justify the similarities.

I'm not offended by you hating the sword, but I think it's pretty wild to claim the lore is a mess just because you don't like it. Darkin have never really been sold as "living weapons." They were trapped in weapons and the bits of organic feel to them are a reflection of that, in some way (beating heart on new Aatrox and the eye on Rhaast), but it's not that the lore is mess so much as any direct meaning there hasn't been revealed yet.

His model is consistent with the direction League is going in for in-game models; smooth and less detail makes them more readable in game. If anything, I wish they would quit making cinematic trailers with close-up shots of them, because that's exactly what the models are not designed for. It's designed to look good from an isometric view during game, and it succeeds at that.

LoadedXan3 votes

First I would like to know when and what players tested Aatrox for the rework cause as far as I know, they didn't. Please provide the proof cause I'd love to know.

Second, the thing is the thematic style of reworked champs is the same. Swain STILL is a durable spell caster, Taric is still a healer with defensive buff capabilities, Reworked Aatrox is NOT an AA fighter who excels at close range with mobility and great sustain. He's an AD caster with moderate sustain and almost NO defensive skills besides blood well that's on a long CD and was tacked on to his ult. Old Aatrox could use Q for escape, E for slow, it gave him a level of comfort and safety, but not a huge amount that exceeded any other champion's. The New Aatrox W has an extremely short side to the cast side, making it defensively weak, and his Q is almost useless at close range for the first 2 casts because it does reduced damage and doesn't CC as well as lock him in place and use a long cast time. The E is extremely short, sure if you see the gank coming and spam it twice you can maybe get away but it functions like it's design, to reposition in a fight. Besides that the E is so short that if an enemy is meleeing you and you use your first Q and E backwards, you will NOT hit them with the edge if they chase you. His kit is meant for chasing yet he has weak close range offense til his 3rd Q which can be seen coming cause he has to cast the first 2 and the W again is weak if the enemy turns and fights.

Third, Personality: He's completely different, that is undeniable. There was this air of respect Old Aatrox had for enemies. In his quotes he literally says "Even cowards can give their lives." It's a point made that he believes in combat, not just winning and slaughtering people. Sure he will kill people who don't fight back but, he respects the fight, and the fighters. That's all gone, now he's just a revenge driven screamer with a weird unexplained accent. He was that guy who might be evil, might not, but he had almost honored and seemed ethical to those who choose to fight. His rework is like that kid on the street screaming " I WISH YOU WOULD, DO IT" ex. almost all his lines end with "COME, FIGHT ME." Oldtrox didn't go and chase a fight, he fought those who chose to and honored them. Those that didn't he slaughtered but he didn't just scream at people to fight him, he let them choose. He was in the best use of the term, a duelist, not a butcher.

Thats a lie, he looks Similar to the Old one, end of Story. You can move the E while doing other Spells, you can Dash 2 times, its great. Let the Hate Rain Peoplez.

The current aatrox requires some thought when playing him. Its not just hey I'm going to stand still and aa and win. Knowing when to engage, managing blood pool, and hitting your q or e determine if you win or not. He might not be the most difficult champion, but he isn't as easy as everyone makes him out to be. Easily countered. People in plat and above know how to play against him.

And with his ult, at least I can kite/auto like an adc. It adds something beyond mindlessly autoing.

Tbh Completely honest, I could put his VO to the side but his kit is just bad compared to the old one. It is not unique at all, It's basiclly copy paste from other champions. His old Q is now somewhat takes place in his 3rd combo Q, His W is just... Bad..., His E(Dash And Passive) So unoriginal and does NOT fit his character and the worst offender, His damn ultimate. They just made him big tbh because it's cool, I loved old Aatrox because of his kit and how he felt like a damn hyper killing machine but now his a "Warrior" that takes him time, When I saw the cinimatic I thought of mobility and speed, We got non of that, His E is horrible, His Ultimate Is Horrible, His W is Horrible And his Q is decent... Please don't release him to the public even if he is good in game, I want to see my favourite character again not this basic template champion.

But wasn't his old kit just a standard fighter template ? I mean he had a skill shit slow , a gap closer and a steroid in a sense with his heal / damage skill and his ultimate was just an empowering ability with his unique trait being his revive mechanic which they incorporated into his new ult.

I like how this image is zoomed in on old aatrox and zoomed out on new aatrox lol. Maybe if you zoomed out with old aatrox you'd understand that hose "details" start to look mushy just dark.

Ok so first of all, I didn't take that pic. Second, both pics might not be as zoomed in, but the difference is very minor, so I don't believe that'll have much of an effect on making the details ''mushy''.

Hi im Fikky3 votes

i have been waiting for this rework for such a long time. Looking forward for it so i can spam my level 7 but now i am ashamed to even press ctrl+6. For this long time they had they just ruined the champion. I will enjoy old aatrox a bit more on live servers while i still can cause when his rework gets on live servers ill need to find a new main.

They straight up pulled a Karma on him.

He surely needed major changes, but I never expected to not only get his kit wrong (Ability based with Cooldown focus instead of auto-attacking) but also his personality (from stoic harbinger of war to your stereotypical edgy demonlord).

It feels like the guy responsible for reworking him played DOOM and was like "Mmmmm...."

Have to respectfully disagree: This new aatrox is going to be one of the highest skill capped top laners. Im extremely hyped to start maining this champion. And tbh, he's only a little bit different. His new W is literally just his old E but with more swag. His Q and E no are quite similar to his old Q. And his passives sort of make up for his W. His old passive is just in his ult now. Champs actually pretty similar. Just way harder to play. Im so pumped to pick up this new champ.

Disagree with the part that his skills aren't different, he was just and aa rclick champ, a fun one but not good enough, and now he actually needs skill and relies on spaming skills and very few aa.

you're right, but if u ignore the input factor he does pretty damn similar stuff. like his old E is still a thing, he still gets a sort of ranged knockup, still gets his passive, still gets lifesteal. yeet.

The old aatroz was one dimensional and impossible to balance with no levers to tune. I know people like those older more simplistic kits but for this game to move forward kits like that gotta go.

Sure, he was a one dimensional champion. I was initially excited for an Aatrox rework but this just misses the mark. It is completely changing his playstyle, from an auto-attack based duelist to another AD caster.

Communication is the key here I guess. Riot should have an active conversation going on with the community as they rework these champions so the player base is appeased but everything is so closed book
