Meet battlemages (AKA control mages), the champions left to rot if Riot doesn't want them in LCS

Are you a mage?

Are you designed for being able to stay in a teamfight longer than the 3 seconds average of the other mages?

Do you barely have some synergy with a keystone or none at all?

If you do happen to have said synergy, did that keystone get gutted because of it?

Are you forced to build pure mana for the first 20 minutes since the mana nerf apocalypse from last year?

Did you ever get picked in some pro championship as an emerging or off-meta pick just to get stomped by the nerf hammer a week later?

Do you have to give up any hopes of winning lane when the opponent locks-in an assassin, even if you are supposed to fare well against them?

Did you get any slight or major rework so people played you for 2 weeks, then got forgotten for months about you until the meta somewhat shifts for you?

If you answered positive to most of these, then I'm sorry congratulations, you are a battle mage!! Now, the next two questions will have an huge impact on your viability, good luck:

1- Does Riot have some unknown bias or favoritism for you? 2- Are you able to play top?

If you answered yes to one or both of these questions, then congratulations again! You are meta and you'll stay this way until your answer for these questions become negative! If, on the contrary, you answered no, I'm sorry (I really am) but you'll need to wait another major rework in either your kit or any field concerning mages until you MIGHT be able to do something for some weeks in the meta.

Mages are too homogenized honestly. They're pretty much only allowed to do burst in different ways, and magic pen is core to too many builds. There isn't much room allowed for different power fantasies for subclasses like catchers or battle mages.

Sadly, when people try to differentiate types of magic damage champions to have strengths other than just dealing more damage, people act like it's 'abusive cheating' when it's just adding some variety to the game. For example, certain champions Lissandra Fiddlesticks playing as the Catcher/Control-mage subclass, and sacrificing significant damage from runes by taking a full Resolve page to get Aftershock, is often considered 'abuse' by some players.

I also kind of wish item 3001 could be made attractive for short/medium ranged battle mages again. It was actually good for playstyle variety, though it was probably a little too generically powerful at the time it was originally nerfed since it was being picked by the likes of Cassiopeia. It seems like a middle ground could be found where certain champions like Fiddlesticks Swain Galio Gragas Annie Ryze would consider picking it up when they need MR and mana.

honestly i dont think mages need any buffs they are the most played role in the game . you see zyra xerath vel koz morgana fiddle galio and other mages being played bot . zoe lux zilean morgana galio sylas and alot more other mages being played mid . and right now mages top are even better than top lane champions themselves like kennen and vlad . mages have been the msot played role in the game for a long long time because u can pick them jungle top mid and support and there was a where ppl picked them adc too untill heimer and champs like him got nerfed but to this day there are still ppl who pick stuff like karthus adc . while that guys arguement was that people pick assassins into mages to counter them when it is not true at all actually on the other hand assassin mid are mostly being countered by mages like ekko for example being countered by morgana galio sylas etc ... while the only mages he actually counters in karthus . mages are fine and most of them deserve nerfs not buffs .

all classes are now prety much homogenized, every group go for same runes and same items with few exeptions and moment some champ stand out from line he get nerfed to the ground, also on top of that it seem that ultimate balancing goal is just frontload all damage to oneshot or at least kill with half of combo - welcome to the new deathmatch arena League of Battlerite.

Some of this is what people don't get. Every time Zed or a champ with duskblade is brought up the first thing people do is scream "LOL JUST RUSH ZONYAS". Rush that on anivia, or karthus, or Swain or the majority of any non burst champ and that champ loses lane and will be behind for the majority of the game due to the need to build mana pools. You end up rushing catalyst or tear out of pure necessity because it has to stack and are key items. Diana, Leblanc and burst champs that survive that matchup can just buy tome, but still need to then rush items to match the lethality and passives of a 2300 g item.

Point being, the most aggressive mid lane champs can get ridiculous power spikes from cheap items and mages need more item variety. Riot doesn't seem to know what to do because of too many burst mages in the game that giving new snowball items will always end up making those burst mages more powerful.

TheGreatNinx1 votes

take inspiration tree to get a free stopwatch. sure you gotta wait 10mins but hey now you don't have to invest the gold to survive while you get your mana items first. Aniva has pretty high base armor as well. I don't think its lethality that is causing its more that the keystones give champions like zed more burst then he needs.

The Ecdysiast11 votes

The real culprit isn't any of those.

It's the sneaky shit they didn't announce. Back when Runes Reforged happened, they decided with no input from players what stats to give champions to "compensate" for the stat loss from the old rune system. Which, unfortunately, means many, many mages who had the option to bring Armor seals on top of their AP glyphs and marks were not given any additional armor.

So now they have to choose between losing because they don't have enough armor or losing because they don't have enough AP.

Want DoT keystone? Aery + Scorch is your keystone, check it out guys: https://clips.twitch.tv/StrongBlatantBaboonGOWSkull

Aery sucks because it doesn't synergize with DoT effects well at all. Scorch is literally a mini rune, and the only rune that synergizes with DoT's.

Sure if they are still under a DoT effect by the time Aery somehow returns, she will fly back at them again. But for me this isn't a keystone that works with this champion.

I have this new setup that sort of works well (5 out of 5 games won so far), where I take Dark Harvest and I have 5 different DoT effects going with this; Scorch, Corrupting Potion, Malzahar E, Ignite, Landry's Tornment (and atleast one of these dots upon me trying to get the enemy to half health for the Dark Harvest stack will always ensure me that I get it, or when a low health enemmy tries to get away that I have that last tick which will kill them)

I would REALLY LOVE if I could add Deathfire Touch to this setup for that 6th DoT, god I really miss Deathfire Touch.

Viktor Well hello there.

Abusing Klepto and Iceborn top lane, gets his numbers nerfed whilst Iceborn is untouched because Riot's golden boy uses it. Ezreal

Vikta1 votes

I've been running it again lately. Ran ice abyssal morel and I think zhonyas I can't rememeber. But rN klepto and I got enough sustain from 45 cdr and abyssal that I ended a game with a solo 1v5

Devilangel61611 votes

Totally not because he wasn't supposed to be a tank. Viktors role until that point had been wave clear, and then lich bane assassin in fakers hands. Never tank, he started to shift his role and they balanced him back to his role. Nothing to do with ezreal, there are other top tanks that use iceborn like ornn and poppy. It's like the boards will blame anything

Ayzev1 votes

{quoted}

Totally not because he wasn't supposed to be a tank

He never built more than one tank item.

SweedishGunner1 votes

He went top and abused items/Klepto which removed his weaknesses, I never played him top out of principle. Making Iceborn melee only wouldn't have effected any of it's designated users.

Saezio1 votes

Well, In that case Ezreal too became a tank with the inception of IBG but I didn't see him get nerfed for it. He abuses klepto better than anyone and is the only champion to be able to bring it vs 2 opponents (for 2 whole seasons now) in lane procing it more than anyone else, but he isn't nerfed for that either.

PaffWasTaken3 votes

As a Viktor main, it really did seem unfair to play him top and really deserved nerfs. But seeing his kit nerfed and powershifted to be even less of a control mage into a late game burst carry just seems so wrong since they could've just nerfed/remove the keystone who caused some of the biggest health problems the game ever saw since Runes Reforged

SweedishGunner2 votes

Agreed, I despise him being top lane (I'm old school, I like everyone in their designed lanes) but his numbers weren't the issue otherwise he would've been taken over mid too, which he wasn't. Klepto still isn't balanced but again they won't remove it because of their Golden Boy using it.

Can you list those mages? Which ones are not viable? Maybe Brand but thats because he no longer has extra spellthief synergy

Azir is trash Viktor is in an unknown state to me Aurelion sol is OP Vladimir is OP Swain is prob balanced but might be in an unknown state for me Kennen is OP Cass is balanced Ryze is OP but most cant comprehend him Anivia is OP > to almost balanced Orianna was balanced but then Riot gave her like 3 buffs over the year for no reason

Taliyah is OP but not really a battle mage

Azir is in a good spot right now cus of his recent buffs, taliyah is a control mage. Orianna is a utility mage like lulu used to be when she could mid reliably.

Also you forgot sylas even tho he is really stupidly bursty he is a battle mage.

Even when he had it he wasnt picked so that point is not valid.

Pfft, whatever. Heimer's is never meta and Heimer doesn't even want to play top, he wants to play mid or bot but they won't let him. No one wants Heimer around. :(

Devilangel61612 votes

Welcome to the boards, where idiots will bitch and moan about anything. This week it's control mages, next week probably assassins.

GodlyBane2 votes

what? Mages do an assasins job better not only because they one shot without having to be even relatively close, nor fed to the target, but they do it from 700+ units, can actually outdamage assasins in 1v1, if the assasin can even land half their combo, not to mention the fucking broken ass item Zhonyas which gaurantees "haha, they got so close to killing me, guess ill be immortal for 2.5 seconds while my team 5 man bombs the person who was trying to shut me down!" yea no mages are disgusting picks. If you main a mage and have decent macro and decent csing, you are gauranteed high gold. Also by good macro i mainly mean in teamfights where you stay in the back and take half of the AD's hp while they stay back as far as possible. Also, if you know you use common sense to stay a decent amount far back whilst you one shot the enemies everything

You're acting as if LCS for the past few seasons wasn't dominated by mages. In fact, it still does.

Read the title....

iDarkWind1 votes

Yes, and I wonder why Riot doesn't want mages to be so meta on LCS. I wonder if isn't because it's always the same class being played on mid lane because it's the best by far compared to other risky options such as assassins.

Saezio2 votes

Well, marksman is also the one class always being played in the bot role, and they don't mind. They also destroyed any semblance of bruisers and mages down there within 1-2 patches of its appearance.

So, marksman being the best by far for bot is OK, but mage being the best for mid is not ok. (I am talking about LCS meta ofc not soloq)

And, surprise surprise, Sona Taric is getting nerfed too... A bot lane that can only work with these 2 specific champions and is unable to be played in any other way, requires specific champions to be played mid top and jungle, and a single ban on either of the 2 fixes the problem but riot wants to nerf a strategy just because it doesn't fit their narrative.

If we are doing that, I want every ranged played top to be made unviable within 2 patches, and every non-mage played mid the same.

Idk imo the issue is that the super meta mages that everyone hates that auto-2shot everything with 2 items abuse defensive mage items too heavy and become mages that 2 shot everything but then are also tanky af for a mage. So many things have been nerfed because the SAME group of mages just abuse defensive items not designed to be built by them. How can they add items for control mages if other mages take them and abuse them until they need to be nerfed.

Considering that a lot of "support" mages are also either artillery/burst mages, I don't think this is as much characterising. But yeah, some of them do play support, true

They gutted Lissandra instead of nerfing aftershock for example.

Stars Shaper1 votes

AurelionSol feels less tanky than a cannon minion now. I don't knpow how he is meant to be a battle mage when all non melees and some of the melees have all more range, damage and tankiness than him.

TekkenPlayer1 votes

The worst part about these champions is that you are rewarded for outright trying your best to ignore the likes of: Zed Yasuo Leblanc instead of being able to retaliate. Landing your full rotation on them without a mana item is more harmful to you unless youre running summoner 12 against a high kill pressure lane to begin with. Midlane feels completely dogshit to play now for half the cast because of it

Blade Crownguard1 votes

You forgot something else:

Are you a Lux main?

If the answer is positive then, what are you doing with your life.

PaffWasTaken1 votes

Cool and all but Lux is an artillery mage, not a control mage
