I rush ardent censor on all of my supports with heals and shields (except Morg).

That's a pretty risky start to rush a luxery item like that. The current version of Ardent Censer provides zero defensive stats. Something you really need on an squishy utility support. I really recommand to stop rushing this item if you are losing in lane in the current state of the item.
Sorry, but I care about my ADC carrying the game more than I worry about myself. I always buy it on
, and it's pretty neat. Of course this works hell lot if you're winning lane. In losing times, I seldomly buy it anyway, hoping my carry would make a comeback with my effort.
Out of curiosity, what do you rush? Mana regen is pretty mandatory first item. Morrellos doesn't provide any defensive stats either, Talisman doesn't provide any AP (a good third pick), and RoA has no utility whatsoever.

It entirely depends on the champion:
You always start with mana glyphs to cover out your early mana problems. You start with
for lane controle. Than you upgrade it into
. After that you can go 2 routes:
rush (while snowballing), you delay your sightstone till your or their front turrets are down.
Note: +/- 10 minutes you always make sure you have
.
After that despite the nerfs you go for
. If you went for the non-snowball route you make sure you have
after all this. Than it's back situation what you need to build first:
if they have double AP or a verry fed mage with AoE damage.
if they have cc that can hurt your adc (note that this item is just as strong as the player, it will take some time before you learned how to use it properly.
Between getting these 2 items you go for
(you get it sooner when you have to roam a lot).
Ones you have your core and you still have
you can switch it for
.
Here are some build examples:
-
-
-
Note that I don't recommand Nami as a general pick. She's a pretty mechanical intensive champion not to mention the actives that require with her core. Their are plently of situations where where build can slightly change. For example while your against a full AD team it would be really dumb to try to protect your carry with a
&
despite their raw power. You build will probaly look more to something like:
-
is a little bit more differently. Her runes varry and depending on her runes and masteries her build slightly alters. Most Janna players go for a lot of AP early. This make it really difficult to give
a place to shine. In the runes I use: [AR quins, Hpen marks, Scaling HP seals, AP glyphs]. It can be really risky to rush a item like that while she's so squishy. Janna is champion that get build similar to nami in the early game. However a Janna build is often more AP focussed:

The thing with Janna is after the mana regen nerfs and her Q nerf the gap between snowballing & falling behind is extreemly large. You do well in lane you go
. You play it horrible and you go
. Their isn't really a option between them. I mentioned
but in most cases you can go for this rush item you have the option to go
. So basicly I would only go
when you are snowballing but fear that it won't last long and you have a really fed adc.
was a good item on
before the price adjustments. Now it's more of a snowbal item for these types of supports. It can still work tho.
is not really a item designed for support. The powerspike just comes to late and unless you adc can carry you both it a really risky and even a stuppid roam to go with. I don't say it's not effective against unexperienced team however. It's just while you are winning the game will just last longer if you go with this.
You must not forget that mana regen scaling with your mana pool. So in the lategame you will have less mana problems. Learning how to mana your mana pool early is the key to victory.
I don't know why your post didn't show up on my pop-up. This is why I go through the posts I made recently. What I'm seeing here is that you bring spellthiefs and really like Crucible's active, so you build Chalice anyway. Crucible is a great item if you're going against a fed Swain. I want to argue against it, because it just doesn't seem useful to me at all, but because of its lackluster stats I've never actually built it. I should probably give it a few games in comparison before I judge. Any excuse to play more Soraka is acceptable.

Personally I like MP5 and CDR before getting the extra utility. One thing I do like outside the passive is the MS. I know it does not provide any defensive stats. But it helps a support kite the enemy.
Typically on sona I would Build

In approximately that order. I know I'm lacking some of the More supportive Items Like Crucible. But I prefer the More Offensive style of Play with the Ability to kite enemies instead of relying on defensive Items. My last Item is usually Death cap or Lich bane depending if I need more Utility, or more Damage.
It's kinda pricey for what it does early on. I'd rarely rush it when there are boots, your gold income item, and sightstone that are all very efficient to get early on and seem to be pretty good in just about every situation. And Mikael's also seems better as good use of its active can really help.
Ardent Censor just doesn't seem as good as it appears on most supports. 25% attack speed isn't that much. Consider that if they're already at 200% attack speed from their items, runes, masters, and attack speed bonuses from leveling up, they only go up to 225%. Meaning then they really only deal 12.5% more damage with their auto attacks while affected by it. But if you have a team with a lot of auto attackers and someone that can heal/shield them all like Sona, then it's a good item.
And please don't give it spellvamp. Most of the users of it barely do any damage with their abilities so they wouldn't consider it as good as it is now since that part of it would be pretty much wasted.
