Is crit realy core on ad carries?

Knight SoIaire ··8 votes·2,234 views

The question is as it follows Is crit just mandatory on ad carry? Or is is that ad carries lack items that are not crit related and good enough to keep them in game ?

i started playing some kalista lately and noticed that its realy hard to pack that crit into my build (combo of lifesteal +runans usualy opens the build, then shoes and lastwhisper, i lacked item slots to build crit and i didnt want to toll the runaans out) the entirety of gameplay changed thats easy to notice even without playing critless adc's but my point is that i didnt feel like it just removed my game i dealt good damage , just didnt burst my opponents, which is a ctualy what ad carries should be doing in the end game screen my damage was good, not liike ordinary critting adc dealing 50k dmg to champions, but i was always somewhere close to the top, usualy behind the ap carry

the problem that i found is that when you are not building crit on adc, you dont realy have items to build, your build can consist of items like bt, botrk, lw, ruunans and shoes besides that i would consider only maw of malmortius in this build still stacking bt and botrk isnt desirable and most of remaining options just dont cut it besides that its a big diference when enemy adc bursts squishies while you just dont

how do you think? im certainly going to test it more and more. maybe we dont even need crit in this game

oh and also some of my games were ranked, besides the one where me and my friend dc'e because rito gams ... we stomped quite nice

The thing about adding not-crit AD items to the games is that they'll make top laners (champions with very high AD ratios) stronger. Crit is what lets marksman be worth bringing, because otherwise they'd just do less damage and be more squishy. Kalista is just a unique case because of her execute.

ProfDrDeath7 votes

And even on Kalista, you should evaluate your build choices based on the enemy team.

Runaan's is pretty decent on her, yes, but only against squishy and/or very kiteable teams. If the enemy team has a lot of tanky characters to kill, you're better off with a more traditional, crit-based build on her.

Best example: Wildturtle's Kalista in the recent SKT vs TSM game, in which he could not do anything against Urgot/Gnar/Rek'Sai/Alistar.

disregardable2 votes

I'm gonna disagree with that, for no other reason than Kalista is particularly difficult to farm with. Her attack animation is a bitch, and you will blow all your mana if you try to Q to make up for it. Even the pros struggle to last hit with her without Runaans. If it's solo-queue and you need to carry their asses, you can't really afford to only have 5 cs/minute. Not to mention it's generally the ADC's job to clear, no one else on your team may be able to do it.

BluePolarizer3 votes

it is not the ADC's job to waveclear. It is the mid/mage support/mage top/AOE jungler's job to clear because they can do it from either further than autoattack range, or because they're tanky enough to take a few hits. Most ADCs can't waveclear very well at all.

Z Statistic3 votes

What are the top ADC right now? Jinx Kalista Lucian Sivir

What do they all have in common? Waveclear. What are the top supports to go with them? Janna Bard Nami Thresh What do they have in common? No real waveclear. Even maxing E on Thresh is shitty waveclear. And no one should max Q on Janna. Maxing W on Morg is a bad idea.

So, all the most popular/powerful ADC have waveclear and none of the most popular/powerful supports have waveclear.

It's true, most ADC can't waveclear well; those who can't aren't good adc right now and thus most ADC aren't very good.

Sona Ping1 votes

"What are the top ADC right now? What do they all have in common? " What is a long range poke ability with a 100% or greater AD scaling? Potent Potables for $300.

Z Statistic1 votes

They're also all ranged, all have AD scaling at all, all have weak early games as opposed to bruisers, have at least 325 movement speed, and at least 0.65 base AS. They have a lot of thing in common.

I've chosen to look at the fact that they all have waveclear. I'm not concluding they are strong because they have waveclear. I'm saying that the most popular ADC have waveclear so the statement, while true in the general population, that ADC generally don't have good waveclear is inaccurate.

Graves king of waveclear Caitlyn Plitover waveclearer.... KogMaw quite good waveclear with e+ult Tristana great waveclear Varus Awsome waveclear

The only carrys that really lack waveclear are vayne and draven, Ashe(since rework) and Ez, but for those the lack of waveclear really is the main reason to not pick them(atleast for me)

Z Statistic1 votes

Ashe Very inefficient waveclear Caitlyn Very good waveclear Corki Decent waveclear at lvl 1 Draven Bad waveclear Ezreal No waveclear because no Ezreal in their right mind puts a point in W until lvl 9 or 13 Graves Amazing waveclear Jinx Decent waveclear but mana intensive early on Kalista Amazing waveclear when done correctly KogMaw E has virtually no value as waveclear. R is lvl 6. Lucian Great waveclear MissFortune Lol Quinn Ok waveclear but doesn't go bot often Sivir Godtier Tristana This is not waveclear. This is aoe. You do not press a button and people die. You are at the mercy of minion focus until you have a lot of AD. Twitch Horrible clear until you have items. Varus Good waveclear Vayne no waveclear whatsoever

Good: 9 Bad: 8

As opposed to mages where waveclear is what allows you to function in lane at all, yes, ADC as a population have poorer waveclear. The top tier ADC however can shove just as well as any mid.

Sire Hippington2 votes

Koggs E is a great waveclear tool, Mfs E is also high waveclea(drops a bit later on, but she's still not that bad in clearing waves) Kallistas waveclear only comes from hurricane, which gives any carry waveclear(unless you get insane amounts of ad to 1-shot meleeminions with Q) Putting points in W doesn't impact Ezreals waveclear as it doesn't hit minions, and not getting a point on it is straight dumb, it offers alot for all-ins With the right positioning, Ashes W grants quite some clear, but definitly isn't as effecktive as most overs(way better than a vayne though) Tris E allows for pretty great waveclear, definitly better than kallista. forgot twitch cait, graves and varus aren't seen that often, but only get beaten by sivir for waveclear

shalec1 votes

Kog and MF's E's are never maxed and do not scale. They're utility abilities that do pitiful damage throughout the game, especially since they're usually maxed last. Their waveclear is very poor compared to other carries despite having large AOE abilities.

Kalista gets better waveclear off Runaan's than any other carry because the bolts apply Kalista's spear debuff, allowing her to Rend several minions at once without having to spend time hitting each individual one.

only bad MFs don't max E first, it's one of the skills with the highest basedamage if maxed, and the slow gets massive, allowing to get of alot AAs to stack up W, or to easily keep anyone without dash within your ult. Kogs E is pretty powerfull if maxed first, the base damage increase is like corkies Q, it's easy to land and the slow gets massive, if you land a high rank E on a short ranged carry, you can abuse them with your W as they can neither reach you nor get away, and it also helps your sup and jungle to setup plays aswell as disengageing. People are just to ignorant for alternative skill orders.

Thank you for making this point, after reading all this I just couldn't believe what was being said. ADC is my weakest role so I can't argue against people that use it more often, but ADC's should want better waveclear early rather than better damage no? And skill order is ALMOST always situational in my opinion, on pretty much all champs. If you need the benefits from one skill more than another, max it first, if you are pushed under turret by a superior opponent or sitting jungler, why max damage first, just max your waveclear skill (talking about MF) so you can farm safely under turret, and have better chance escaping those ganks

Zair Umbras1 votes

If you max Kog's E as an ADC before your W, you're a complete idiot. If you max it before your Q, you're giving up on a LOT of damage potential due to his Q's passive AS and such. MF also does not level her E anymore since her W and Q are her biggest damage dealers and as an ADC, you HAVE to have the biggest damage potential, plus her own E falls off since it scales off of AP rather than AD.

Then there's Ashe that you mentioned, which is hilarious. Her W gets stopped by the front three minions. You have to stand in the bush as a wave walks in a straight line and hit them from there to hit more than 2-3 minions unless there's a stray minion to the side, in which it's 4 possible hits. This isn't the old Ashe who could pierce minions if it was already hit by part of the W to begin with.

You are at least right on Trist's E...

Graves is seen quite often. He's not in LCS often, but he's got a higher pick rate than Sivir and barely lower pick rate than Lucian, Jinx, and Vayne who sit at 27-27.7% pick rates while Graves is at a 20%.

Sire Hippington2 votes

W gives 10%as per aditional rank, E gives 60damage and 10% more slow aswell as lower cd. You need like BT+IE for the as be worth more than 60 damage in a trade, esecially if its on aoe, and the higher slow is massive and allows you to land more AAs than the aditional AS actually does. And for kog, if you don't feel the need for more range than rank 1 W, maxing E above W is perfectly legit, better wavecontroll, way better cc, more poke/burst, and the 1% more on-hit isn't alot in the early lane.

BluePolarizer1 votes

Ez W doesn't waveclear. It doesn't hit minions.

Zair Umbras1 votes

You can't use your ult to wave clear as Kog prior to items and your E is your last leveled ability, so it also fails... >> Ez also can't wave clear without his R. His W only hits champions.

LankPants1 votes

You realise both Vayne and Kog'maw are on the rise right now? Neither of them have any real wave clear.

ADC's don't need wave clear, mostly because they're most useful as tank killers.

It's also why the Hurricane Kalista build is trash into teams with any dedicated tank, you just can't kill a tank without crit chance unless you're Vayne or Kog.

Apollocliptic1 votes

A lot of people are talking about adc's and their waveclears as necessity. Someone mentioned it's the mid role to waveclear. I notice that in a lot of my games (through silver and gold) the adc is always trying to last hit during that "dance" before a team fight or a skirmish, and the losses usually occur because they get focussed by engagers, like Vi or Malphite.

From my experience, low elo adc's want that waveclear more, but more to cs steal from mid during the mid game or if they come mid to gank early. I'm not saying wave clear is bad, but it's not the goal of the adc, I agree that mid (or mage supports and other champs) should wave clear, or have tanks at the front while the adc safely farms as you slow push forward. Having the adc trying to waveclear is why they're usually out of position. I'd rather have my Vel or Lux waveclear from the back, than have the adc at the front trying to do it, trading 200 gold in minions for a 1000 gold in a lost team fight

Same goes for turret pushing. I've often been mid or supp mages, sieging a turret. While I can clear the minions and even hit the enemy from outside turret range, my adc is trying to do that instead. So instead of dealing turret damage (more so mid - late game, and i find it most annoying if it's an objective losing game and we REALLY need those turrets) the adc is trying to farm still, and by the time they do, the enemy has respawned or whatever. I often end up attacking turrets myself, and have even seen fights lost, because while it takes me 3 seconds to kill the turret, the adc could do it in 1.5 but would rather chase and dive. We have two guys die to turret damage, and 2 more trying to escape turret damage, when only one more hit would have killed it. I just don't understand those situations, adc's should focus objectives, plain and simple

not sure when that game was, but I saw another game with him playing Kallista...maybe it was during MSI?

anyway the other team had 2+ biggg tanks 2 game in a row, and both games he rushed runaans fucking hurricane. I know pros aren't perfect but damn that seems like some bronze SHITE. maybe his end game build woulda been crazy but they never got there because TSM couldn't handle these mid-game powerhouse tanks

Knight SoIaire 2 votes

easy solution crit is so isolated that only caries use it because it scales with itself and other stats that are also damage only

if the new item would have to be effective it would need to scale with other ad items, so its only worth in full ad build thats the area top laners cant even aproach, thewy are usualy meele beasts that need to mix defense and offense

also played a cait game now ... not ranked but i ended up totaly destroying graves and dealing the most damage in my team by far

the only problem that i findrealy significant so far is burst with mobility, as i can only deal sustained damage, i cant scare people off as effectively, but i think kinda liked the challenge

also black cleaver is a beast for those builds if crit would be removed bc would enter a golden age

Sona Ping2 votes

The thing about adding not-crit AD items to the games is that they'll make top laners (champions with very high AD ratios) stronger.

That reasoning doesn't make any sense at all; Adding another AD item wouldn't give them another item slot. The items are built with the same gold and take up the same item slot. Having a new 60 AD item option wouldn't make a top laner any stronger when they can just get Hydra anyway.

Critmaster Garen5 votes

depends what youre trying to do.

attack speed and flat ad is strong against turrets. critical strike is a stat you mix in to deal damage to champions, baron and dragon.

if you ask me, ranged ad shouldnt have access to crit like they do. they shouldnt be the class that deals the most damage to champions and is the strongest at taking objectives at the same time. its kindof dumb that they simultanously fill the 2 most important roles in the game.

imo mages should deal the most damage against champions, and ranged ad should just be good at taking turrets. maybe then every single meta wont revolve around them.

assassin meta, tank meta, bruiser meta. its really all just the champions that are best at killing ranged ad for the time. same reason why ranged ad mains are never happy with any meta. unless they can just sit in place and destroy anyone in front of them.

if they wouldnt have an iron grip on the game like they do, and be made into nieche champions like every other class, maybe this game could be balanced for once.

at this point i feel like the only reason theyre not trying to balance ranged ad against other classes is, because of esports. having a static meta with very similar team comps every game on both sides makes this game easier to digest for a spectator.

Marthian1 votes

Bruisers do those two things, generally have more cc, and are considerably harder to kill.

You focus the adc and they will most likely die. That's their main weakness. Even if they run to escape, that's time lost they could be auto-attacking.

no they dont lol.

the only 2 exceptions really are nasus and udyr. other than that, there is no class that is better at sieging turrets than ad carries. simply because its easier for them to sneak auto attacks in from a distance, than it is for anyone else. bruisers have to go far under the turret to attack it in melee range. ranged ad can just go in, hit it 2 or 3 times and then draw back.

and as far as damage goes, unless you completely suck at the game, ad carries deal by far the most damage to champions in the game.

with how much riot has buffed kiting mechanics, bruisers have even trouble to 1v1 ad carries nowdays. lategame they just get blown up by them.

Sire Hippington2 votes

The sad thing is that they don't even have to kite, last graves game i didn't even bother to move from that reksai diveing at me, 5sec later she was dead and i still at fullhealth.

i dont realy know much here but they kinda became known for that freshness for me, they defy the set standards that kill creativity in this game

Sire Hippington2 votes

and yet they still bow to the omnipresent ADC-meta.... I agree with the critmaster, ADC are a fix point in any meta since S1, all depends on keeping them save or killing them. They shouldn't be the highest damagesource vs champions, objectives and buildings while beeing in a rather svae position, haveing a strong lane, especially 2v2, and haveing the highest sustain in the game.

Sire Hippington2 votes

crit mostly has an overpowered scaleing, while non crit lacks lategame scaleing for carrys. IE is the highest ad-item besides granting 20%crit and 50%crit-damage(which is 30%increased AA dps) PD is the highest AS item after hurricane and adds 35% crit, which with an IE is a 52.5% increased AA dps(so IE+PD is a 82.5% increased AA dps in totall from crit alone) As long as crit empowers your AAs to do more damage than burst skills(a single crit for 250% totall ad usually is more damage than a graves ult) while also giving you all the other stats, there is no point on not getting it for carrys. You don't loose out AD in getting a IE rather than any other ad-item, nor do you really give up AS on takeing PD. I also don't have problems in filling itemslots with no-crit(trinity, BC, ER, BT, LW, BotrK, FM, Hurricane, Maw, getting atleast 2 lifesteal items and hurricane makes you quite a drain tank) and adding stronger raw ad or as items might get abused by crit builts aswell.

I also have no problems doing my job with a no-crit carry built, they don't need it to funktion if they know what they do(unlike public beliving), but it's just much easier to roll over entire teams with a crit built in the late. With a slight increase in scaleings for carries and a bit better Ad/AS itemisation, crit really wouldn't be a neccesarry multiplicator for ad-carrys.

Earl Eulrich2 votes

If there´s a terrible need for you to completly solo-carry the game then the answer is probably yes - however, it begs the question if any Champ should be powerfull enough to just solocarry the game with his absurd dmg+burst (1sec for 2 700+crits is indeed burst, no matter if you´re an ADC or an Assassin).

If the game is pretty even and you have a somewhat competent twam however there is absolutly no need for crit-build to do work as an ADC, some work just brilliant as AD-Casters or even Bruisers (especially Graves and Varus), some work fine with more hybridy builds, some even with utility build (e.g. "blue"-ez) - you obviously will lack some of the "step into LB and kill her bef ore she kills you while still having enough dps to finish the nearby tank from 100-0 in 4sec afterwards"-power, but you sure will be a very relevant factor that still can decide the game just aswell as any other class currently can. Maybe it would lead to a world in which an ADC will not be picked for 100%of all games anymore, but it wonßt make them unplayable or even weak.

Partholonian2 votes

It's mandatory because it's OP. That's why marksmen that have a significant amount of their power tied up in abilities/procs that don't scale with crit, such as MissFortune Varus Corki Ezreal Lucian Teemo Quinn Twitch , are not seen much right now, or are even considered troll picks or not marksmen at all. Vayne isn't completely locked out because of her relatively strong dueling that allows her to splitpush without committing suicide, but she's far less common than she was a year or two ago.

Kalista would probably fall into the "doesn't abuse crit well enough" category too, but still sees play for her insane mobility, strong objective control, and aoe knockup on a marksman (sort of).

It's possible that nerfs to crit could restore more diversity to the bottom lane, while still keeping marksmen important for their ability to control objectives, wreck towers without getting too far under them where they could be cc'd and killed more easily, and generally deal sustained damage from a position of safety.

Sire Hippington1 votes

Lucian Quinn are cirit carrys, Vayne scales better with crit than most others haveing massive base AS and a insane ad-steroid, Twitch is the best crit scaleing champ in the game, high base values for ranged aas, a strong AS steroid, a high ad steroid and 800range aoe crits! Kallista works as well with crit as a cait, she just works even better with hurricane in some situations. Ezreal MissFortune Varus have good base stats and a good AS steroids, so they scale quite well with crit.

The reason they don't see much play really isn't a lack of crit-synergie...

NeoScout2 votes

unfortunately yes because it's op and boring.

Duke Anax1 votes

There are two kinds of AD Carries, those that rely mostly on Auto Attacks and those that use their Abbilities. You need Crit to increase your Auto attacks, but for abbilities, you usually need more AD.

Kalista has a Kit that doesn't rely only on AA for damage so it's possible to build her without Crit.

Maybe something like item 3006 item 3085 item 3153 item 3508 item 3071 item 3139

ABlueQuaker1 votes

item 3006 item 3153 item 3072 item 3085 item 3035 item 3026 is the Standard Build for Kalista unless you go the standard AD Carry route.

Partholonian1 votes

Is the double lifesteal really necessary, or are you just building it because of a lack of other good flat AD options? BC has only half the straight AD of BT, but the stacking armor shred (on multiple targets because of Hurricane) seems really good too. And Rend really benefits from it because you attack first and then rend, so you're always rending vs. shredded armor (unlike abilities you would use up front, which benefit less from BC). BOTRK's passive is also physical and will benefit heavily from the BC+LW combo.

ABlueQuaker1 votes

It depends on what you need. SITUATIONALLY you could quite viably purchase Black Cleaver or Frozen Mallet or something else with a valuable on-hit effect.

ABlueQuaker1 votes

item 3006 item 3153 item 3072 item 3085 item 3035 item 3026 is the Standard Build for Kalista unless you go the Standard AD Carry route.

In this build, BT essentially replaces your IE, and Runaan's replaces Shiv/PD.

Similarly, on the likes of Ezreal or even Urgot, you take a standard TriForce AD Carry build of item 3006 item 3078 item 3031 item 3072 item 3035 item 3026 and substitute the IE with Muramana and Berserker's Greaves with Ionian's and get a solid AD Caster build.

Duke Anax2 votes

On Urgot you definitely want BC over LW and Gunblade over BT, because most of his damage comes from abbilities.

Drunk Rummate1 votes

Lifesteal builds favor sustained battles while crit builds favor shorter battles.

Non crit builds generally favor heavy lifesteal. They're good for ADCs who naturally have a lot of sustained damage in their kit. You're a lot more likely to see Vayne and Kalista running BT + BotRK in lieu of IE for this reason. With Vayne's true damage and Kalista's infinitely stacking rend, you don't need crit to deal ADC amounts of damage.

However, even still, both of these ADCs still benefit heavily from crit if you choose to build it. It really just comes down to user preference in their case.

Other ADCs unfortunately don't have this luxury, so for the most part it's core because they need the extra damage to be relevant.

Knight SoIaire 1 votes

Criticals multiply total damage a lot more than straight AD will.

Tilomentry1 votes

Crit is the difference between doing 300 damage per attack and doing 750 every other attack. So when it comes to late game, crit is the defining stat on ADC. That said, mid game power spiking ADC use to be a thing. Champs like Graves and Sivir would get Bloodthirster (back when it gave 100 AD) and Corki and Ezreal would get Triforce and those champions would spike really hard mid game. But after Riot normalized the max AD you could get from a single item to 80, it just became more efficient to build an IE for mid game and late game power. You can try doing a no crit build to try and sneak more utility into your build but often it's not really worth it because you have allies for utility and your mid game power spike wont be much greater than it would be if you went a crit build.

Kalista also happens to be a special case because of how her rend mechanic works. She can stack up a lot of damage that can make up for her lack of crit.

Davy Crockett1 votes

What really annoys me when I was starting to play adc that everyone rushed IE while I rushed a BT and a PD instead. So annoying. Just saying.

3TWarrior1 votes

actually, if I build one crit item, it's for the burst damage on kogmaw, but otherwise, I prefer lifesteal over crit and then runaans for hitting multiple enemies

unlike Jinx (who only hits enemies close together with her Q), runaans on carries other than sivir allows you to hit them with 50% of your damage and ALL ON HIT EFFECTS

with kogmaw's W and blade of the ruined king, this means hundreds of damage just on the extra bolts, much less his actual damage, then having at least 30% life steal with 400 AD or more lets you survive easily while you peel the enemy down

kogmaw is the answer to the tank meta!

Apollocliptic1 votes

Personally I think it'd be easier to remove life steal from ADC items (or weaken it) then remove Crit. While I think Crit should go completely, or be changed to improve dps rather than the burst feature feature it is (if crits did "some" bonus damage, but focussed on armour shredding - tanks would still melt to ADC's but they wouldn't be able to burst other classes)

With life steal (+ crits) many adc will burst, sustain damage and heal at the same time. Many adc can recover from being out of position or caught out because they can land some slow, use a dash or in some cases root or stun, shoot three minions or hide in jungle and come out with full hp. If adc didn't steal so much life, they'd be forced to focus entirely on good positioning and sustaining damage from a safe distance. An adc the messes up can be saved it they are not 100-0 by any other cc champ. I know some ADC's focus on AD caster or pure burst (some graves, not all) but most go with Life steal and crit builds for sustain, dps, burst and objective control all at once.

side note: Thematically speaking, a ranged carry should have less damage then a melee one. The difference is meant to be the "safety" and "speed", individual hits SHOULD be higher on melee champs, but crit is focussed on ranged champs, but they also keep their other advantages of safety and AS. The only other edit (while I think it makes sense for ranged carries to have cc) would be to remove mobility. It's the one thing a ranged champ shouldn't and wouldn't have. Moving goes against AS, from a literal stand point, it weakens accuracy (and therefore damage and especially crit chance) and physically a ranged champ would lack burst movement anyway. Usually they have a higher base movement speed due to light equipment, but low burst movement due to weaker bodies and awkward equipment. League doesn't follow those laws, and pack out too many overlapping advantages on a single champion type. The ONLY thing they don't do in league is Tank, but with a late game build they can even do that sometimes (without hard cc to stop them)
