It really depends on the context of the situation. If it's normals, you can still kinda get away with awkward picks because there is no real punishment for losing. But if it is ranked, you're starting the game with not only a very odd support choice (I'm not saying it can't work, I'm just saying that they cannot do it on equal levels as actual supports) but with a teammate that doesn't think they can rely on you (in low elo I can't imagine people really trust each other either, but they trust the champion as well).
Now this doesn't mean comfort picks are bad. Mine is
. The problem is that comfort picks can strengthen or severely weaken a team comp.
is a pretty broad pick because every team should have a source of hard CC and being a tank is a bonus (like an actual tank, not some
/
"They build tanky, they must be tanks" bullshit). Course in some elo's, if you're good enough with a champion then you can carry with them (I don't like this mindset, but that's the mindset).
Is the meta bullshit sometimes? Yes. I shouldn't be told that I can't play
jg because he isn't in LCS. But going
support isn't an off meta pick, it's a cheese pick. You're basically abusing your enemy's confusion towards seeing a Warwick support (though he has an attack speed buff that allows it). An off meta support would be
or
who both have the support tag (secondary) and have multiple support abilities (I'm not sure about
, but
has a heal, defense shred, and a NOPE ult).
Comfort picks are fine, but they don't work anywhere. If it's ranked, get some comfort picks for every role that make sense for that pic. If it's normals? Go nuts. I went
mid and completely shut down a
a while back.
