Increase penalty for dodging in ARAM

Dr Poro··49 votes·4,015 views

Once again, I just had 9 dodges in a row before I could finally enter a game in ARAM.

DODGING HURTS THE EXPERIENCE OF NINE OTHER PLAYERS, FORCING THEM TO WAIT LONGER BEFORE BEING ABLE TO PLAY

ARAM actually already has a more severe punishment than other queues. Normally it's 6/15/30 minutes for first/second/third dodge within 16 hours. In ARAM it is 15/30/60 minutes. However, judging by the high amount of dodges, this still isn't sufficient.

First of all, I think the that a refreshment based on games played is better than one based on time. For example completing 3 games reduces the dodge counter by one.

In ARAM you cannot dodge by accident like in Summoner's rift (by forgetting to pick/ban a champion). All queue dodges are intentional! (except for maybe 0.1% due to connection issues) I think it would be justified to have an ARAM specific restriction that is 4 times of what it is now: 1 hour/2 hour/3 hour restriction from ARAM only (on top of current restriction for all game modes). You can still play other game modes, but if you dodge in ARAM, you shouldn't play ARAM.

EDIT: new idea thanks to Farnermus. Instead of increasing the duration of the punishment, force the player to be actually logged in while waiting out the punishment. This solves the "I just go onto another account" issue.

Step 1: Unlock all champs in aram

Step 2: make it so that someone is still stuck with the same champ and unable to trade it if they dodge.

This will kill all reason to dodge and aram only accounts.

There's a simple solution. Just one. Since most people dodge cos they get shit champs, Riot should make it that even when they dodge, they get the same champ in the next ARAM match. That way dodging would be counterproductive.

Dodging would still be overpowered. Except you would now dodge in order to lock in a champion you like rather than one you'd prefer to discard.

An example of this in practice would look like:

  1. Queue up for ARAM
  2. Get what you consider a nice roll for ARAM
  3. You find you dislike what the rest of your team rolled
  4. Dodge

Now, you still have a time penalty but the next time you queue up you'll still have that nice roll.

Furthermore, how is matchmaking suppose to handle multiple people of similar ARAM-MMR queuing up at the same time with the same locked in champion? You'd also have to forbid premading with someone else who locked in the same champion.

Another issue could come up is that people who dislike what they rolled might try to coerce someone else in champion select to dodge. That way they wouldn't be affected by any of the dodge penalties (new and old) and effectively get a free reroll out of it.

No not really. People are less likely to dodge when they get a good champ. Think about it. Waiting 10 mins just because you don't like a certain team comp then jumping into the next game to find out they have a worse comp. Too much risk involved.

ARAM gives each player different champs, so all that needs to be done is put in that player with an already locked champ and give new ones to others. Forbidding premades is even better. This way premades would talk to each other to stop dodges cos if not, that player can't play with them.

People already do that last bit. It's not new.

Let me change my solution a bit. Let the person who dodged have the same champ, if he's in a premade group, he won't be able to play with them until he has used up his locked champ and if he dodges again, his time penalty is doubled.

even though increasing the penalty is a good idea. it doesn't matter for the most part. even if the penalty was a 2 hour penalty, people would switch to other accounts until it's over.

i suggest a penalty similar to leaverbuster. make them wait a few minutes or even just 1 minute in low priority queue before queueing up for aram again. maybe in ADDITION to the dodge penalty already in place.

This is actually a pretty good idea. Having to wait while logged in fixes the issue of switching to another account. I think if the 15 minutes starts only while you're in queue it would be a better punishment than straight out increasing the duration.

honestly imo more than anything TT needs a rework to bring the champs more into line. I don't expect them to be able to make everyone viable, but the prevailing theme of all the posts about ARAM is "people get the S rank champs/dodge if they don't get S rank champs" - the problem could be fixed by having everyone pick from the same pool, OR you could bring the tiers closer together so that S tier vs A tier isn't as big of an advantage.

I don't think ARAM dodge penalty will actually do anything at all - I don't dodge ARAM really (I mostly dodge if there's a lot of toxicity in pre-game), but it's pretty easy to avoid dodge penalties in general, especially in ARAM where it's not like you're trying to climb the ranked ladder or something.

He's talking about dodging in champ select.

Battlecast Sona1 votes

No, really?

The reason people dodge is because they get shit champs, so, by making all the champs better, they have less reason to dodge. What part of my post implies that I'm talking about something else?

That said, there are simply champs not suited, or overly suited, to the mode regardless of general balance. Amumu and Malphite, for instance, are gods for their teamwide lockdown on a map that you can't spread out for objectives and dilute that power. long range poke might be a bit OP, but people mostly like it because they actually get to play the champ rather than sit under tower until ulti time. However, if we reduce people's ability to avoid champs that don't fit the above(say, jax, shaco, anyone with a map movement spell), ARAM actually gets more balanced.

My favorite suggestions have been 2 stored rerolls but only 1 per champ select, combined with a champion unlocking for everyone playing if a single person has it, combined with a dodge timer that increases as champ select goes on (dodge in ten seconds, sit for an hour. dodge in the last 5, you're done for the day). This means that ARAM only accounts are heavily diluted, There are far fewer chances to get an S-tier, and even with a bad pick it's faster to actually play the game anyway than dodge and try again.

I still see all of this as bandaid fixes to the overarching problem that there are a lot of really terrible champs to get.

The reason that increased dodge penalties don't matter is because of how simple and easy it is to make new accounts, especially if you only want to use them for ARAM. I could probably make a couple accounts today and get them started out to be ARAM accounts with very little effort on my part, as long as I were happy with playing free week champs.

To someone whose been playing ARAM for a while this works even less, because once I get all the champs I want on ARAM account A the logical next step is to make a new account and unlock more ARAM champs there, going back to account A when I want to dodge. You could easily jump back and forth from account to account this way, unless the dodge timer was so long as to legitimately screw over people who had a good reason to dodge/don't dodge very often - I don't particularly want to lose the ability to play ARAM all day because my friend signed in and asked me to play before the match started and I chose to dodge. I dodge maybe 1 out of every 100 to 200 games, so I'm pretty against absurd dodge penalties that potentially maybe help 1 particular problem but create a host of additional problems.

Damn FeelsBadman. I dont really know what to tell ya. Leaverbuster will flag them i guess

Dr Poro7 votes

No. Leavebuster only works for ingame AFK. If you dodge a queue (in champion select), the maximum penalty is 30 minutes.

Oh really? Well ya learn something everyday

if you own just a few accts you can dodge aram all day long with the worse penalty being you have to log out and into another account... i agree the dodge needs to be longer but since it wont be any time soon, now u know what to do so you can join em... cuz if you cant beat em.....

Dr Poro2 votes

It's not about beating them. It's about being able to get into a game. I would never want to screw over 9 other players, forcing them to wait another 2 minutes before they can play.

Also, smurfs that dodge regularly should probably be handled even harsher. (Warnings must be given before a severe punishment is given though. I'm thinking about restrictions from the ARAM queue for one day or even longer in these abusive scenarios)

On the same coin, there should be an actual Non-Random All-Mid mode.

Dr Poro13 votes

That would be Legend of the poro king. I prefer ARAM because I don't enjoy seeing the same 20 champions in every game. (ARAM accounts and dodgers still ensure that this happens too often, though)

Cut off pinky finger on first offense, ring on second, and so on.

Id agree with this, but for some reason LoL likes to crash sometimes (even though i just got this computer for $1,500 lol), and then i have to suffer a 15 minute wait.

JnFnRu1 votes

They also need to reduce the time in Champ Select.

I mean 60 Seconds??? Lower that to 30seconds so its quicker, easy to swap champs and change masteries for a quick game 60 seems way too long.

DorkunedAuras1 votes

Remember this, in normals, people are always going to do the "my friend just came online and I want to play with them, DODGE" thing.

It's annoying but not that big of a deal. Dodging in ARAM isn't solely to avoid champ picks.

I voted yes but only with the additional caviot of remove aram only accounts.
