I think you'll have to choose between getting rune pages, getting Mastery 6 or 7 tokens (purely aesthetic), or spending RP to get both.

You can literally just buy mystery champ shards in shop. They are 1700 each and you can disenchant the shards you get from them...

if you are a new player you honestly only need at most around 4-5 rune pages.

2 is bare minimum, but 5 is well rounded. you can get two defensive ap pages, the standard adc, a bruiser page, and maybe a jungler or supprot page based on what you play.

(im guessing support)

don't fall into trap of buying a crap ton of runes/rune pages. its honestly a waste. even the tier 2 runes are semi acceptable to hold you over. I used those on my smurf and I barely noticed a difference.

I agree. i have a flat AD rune page, armor pen rune page, an attack speed page for on hit champs, Ap rune page, Tank page, a movespeed page for hecarim, and Cooldown reduction page for Riven and Zed. The armor pen page used to be support but now i just use the AP or tank page and obviously the Riven/Zed CDR as well as hecarim page is purely for niche playstyle champs and preferences.

As a whole getting away with 5 will last you almost forever until you get into niche single champion page dedications.

guy i roll pure ap and attack speed on my 2 free rune pages. covers every contingency

playing tank and need armor? dont worry buy it you now have the attack speed to stay alive and last hit. playing adc and you want damage? buy it you're already doing 2 hits a second playing mage and need some mana? who cares tears are eternal and you have 3 tomes already from masteries and runes support getting you down because you cant feed yourself? NOW YOU CAN with that 51 ap from the start of the game your heals and shields will guarantee you win. jungle minions not giving you the gold you need? KILL EM FASTER WITH MORE LIFESTEAL THAN EVER BEFORE. slap on 5 scepters and a bork and never need to recall again

I mean like literally 1-5 essence. It takes minimum 50-250 games to do something with that small an amount.

Hopefully they hear the outcry regarding how new-player-prohibitive runes are and how stale they've become. Unfortunately, I see no easy way for them to fix this in a manner that would adequately compensate those players that spent the RIDICULOUS time, effort, and ip to unlock 20 runes pages and all the runes to fill them. Personally, I will be utterly livid if they just up and remove them. I spent real money on some of those rune pages.

What are you talking about? New players can go long time before thinking about unlocking new runepages. Tier 2, even while they not specialized, are good enouph with 1 IP. Dont tell me that 60IP to fill two runepages is prohibiting.

Yeah I don't have all the champs yet, so I used the few champ shards I got to unlock actual champs so I have around 25 mastery tokens that I can't use and 24 blue essence.

U dirty raka main u don't deserve IP! Jk, I have the same problem! I usually don't shop mastery tokens even on champion I love (I can unlock LV 7 on the champ I'm maining right now but I prefer waiting tp naturally collect the essence than waste IP). Furthermore, when the system came out i unlocked LV7 on Fizz 'cause I played a lot of him at the time, but now I regretit as he got me kind of bored and I don't play him anymore (same with LV6 Azir, which I suck at btw). Don'tr fret on Mastery tokens, improvement and mastery points are better imo :F

Yep, I get you dude. Started November of 2015. Right now I have the tokens for Mastery 6 on Soraka Nami Bard Karma Ashe Caitlyn but only enough blue essence for 1. If I dust all the champ shards I have, I could do 4.

Still, it's kinda frustrating cause I just started playing and am still trying to earn IP for champs, runes, and rune pages. It's great that I can use IP for the chance of getting a shard for one of my Mastery 6 candidates, but that's a lot of games just to get a top laner champ shard so I can disenchant it for some essence. I love the hextech system cause it's a free reward for hard work, but some of it's features are kinda screwy. Mastery 6 and 7 at least mean something now. Mastery 5 just meant you played the champion a lot. Great, I can play something a lot and still suck at it.

I'd say get one of the 7 rune page bundles with RP and you'll be set. Also, you can settle for tier 2 runes for a while until you start really getting into ranked. Seeing some people's rune pages, they'd be better off with tier 2 than the garbage tier 3 pages they make, and tier 2 are much more cost effective. you can also buy a couple keys and IP boosts to try and get the IP faster
