Evelynn has no chance, absolutely not.

With Elise you would have to have completely mastered the champion and even then you'll suffer, from lack of waveclear more than anything else.

But do you think the mage update will make them mid viable again?

Neither Elise nor Evelynn will be getting any changes in that update.

Neither of them are being looked at for a direct change, however, from what we do know of the planned changes to the itemization is that mages are getting more mana, whereas supports are getting more mana regen, so, the larger pool of viable mana items might be a decent boon for eve lane, considering she wont have her mana sustain then.

I don't think it'd help eve much, not looking at her specifically, but everything else that lanes mid around her. I can't think of one mage except maybe vel'koz that wouldn't murder her, and even vel can punish her with a knock up. Top lane eve I can see working considering she can poke tanks with her Q and do some sneeky bush strats with her passive when they're low.

With elise, I main elise and I've tried he in just about every position (don't even bother trying adc elise.. once when I was going top and somebody auto locks top anyway, never will I do it again lol.) She can mid very well surprisely. I've even done it in ranked twice with success (season 6), it works pretty well if you're up against mid laners like ekko or zed, as you can work around them with your rappel, ex burst down ekko, and when he ults rappel and keep hitting him. She's also hard to gank because of her under tower stuns and almost free zhonya's. Mana doesn't really help elise because half her kit is manaless, she can work around mana issues pretty well, maybe better than most mages right now. She does have bad waveclear, and her late game falls off unlike mages such as malzahar or syndra that melt more and more as the game goes on. She's good with roaming though as her kit is jungler, she can get kills and snowball mid easily. Taking seige minions is easy with her spider Q but she also has to be careful of poke since spider form is her most vulnerable.

Basically I don't think either champ will have a better time mid after the mage update than they do now. They struggle as it is.

Hmm, you may be right on the Eve front, top does seem a better fit for her constant harass.

Yea, Elise being half manaless makes her more inclined to hard stats as it were.

I've tried Evelynn both mid and top. I suck with her no matter what. I think I tried about 40 ranked games in season 5 and ended with a 30-something % win rate. Really just awful; worse than maybe any other champ I've played. Though I'm still convinced a good player could hard-counter Nasus with her since he can't itemize against all her damage, you can break wither with W, and you can harass the crap out of him with Q.

I also played Elise in lane for some 50-70 games last season and ended around 53% on her, I think. Elise's main problem in top is that she can't build pen fast enough to keep up with a tank/bruiser's MR stacking. But CSing is very easy, and the heals from spider AAs add up to a lot of sustain.

I think her best lane overall is mid since she can CS with ranged autos well enough. And you can rush an Abyssal and start crushing the enemy mid in no time. Her waveclear isn't awesome, but it's a lot better than people are saying. Spiderling damage just melts minions, and once you get the hang of targeting your homing spider, you can chunk a minion wave pretty hard.
