What I think is Riot's reasoning behind Morellonomicon being core on most mages

item 3165 is bought on mages 90% of the time, since it's an excellent source of AP, CDR, and Mana. However, most don't get it for its passive, which applies Greivous Wounds. I believe Riots reasoning behind putting such a unique/niche passive on such a generic/core item is this: Riot wants mages who have item 3165 to be able to take out about 60-70% of their health, then the GW passive will keep the enemy from healing, and then they could go for the kill. Remember it reduces all forms of healing, so a summoner 7 or Soraka ult could be made nearly useless, and I'm pretty sure it reduces base health Regen as well.

Riot has stated that they wanted to give Mages a roster of items similar to item 3085 item 3046 item 3094 item 3087 , but in mage form. The base for those items would have been Morellonomicon. Similar stats but different effects on them. Why they never got around to it, that i'll never know.

Either way there's always a couple items that are must build on just about anyone from a class. Black Cleaver for Fighters, Redemption for Supports, Infinity Edge for Carries. The item changes over time, but there's pretty much always one.
