I had a terrifying vision of Preseason 7

Toastersaot··126 votes·7,002 views

It was...a Leblanc, a Fizz, and an Ekko , running around with the newly reworked Assassin item 3116 which gives 100 AP, 200 Health, 20% CDR, 300 Mana, and slows for 40%.

My bro Vladimir crying in the corner, sobbing.

Riot's justification for this will be : "We wanted Assassins to be relevant when behind, so we gave them an item to offer utility to their team. We found this item in Rylai's Crystal Scepter."

Edit: It's the assassin update. I can see them doing this.

The problem with being relevant when behind is that they're usually overbearing when ahead.

Penns20 votes

Not much more overbearing than burst- or mages in general right now imo.

Malicious Metal5 votes

*Burst mages/zone control mages that build/rush Rylais

Unstoppable Monk2 votes

Anything AoE is a control/burst/zone mage if you build Rylais and believe in the heart of the cards.

Ralanr6 votes

True. That's the tricky part about allowing champions to be relevant at all stages.

On one hand, no one wants to lose relevance. But trying to not make them overbearing when ahead is difficult. Even tanks can be pretty overbearing when ahead and can have trouble being relevant when behind (defense items may be cheap in comparison, but you're not always going to be able to keep up with them).

I guess I don't notice it much because I just try and do my job as a tank, which is considered successful as long as I can lockdown or peel away a target. Even if I die, I consider it a success if my allies cap on it.

For damage classes it's more tricky.

Assassins NEED to be balanced through being useless when behind, but overbearing balls of hated and misery when far ahead.

It is a class that is only healthy when it is feast or famine. Assassins are not a class for babies who don't like losing. If you are a baby who doesn't like losing, don't play assassins. Win hard or lose hard, go big or go home.

EDIT: I should make it clear that this is why I rarely play assassins. They can be fun but when I really want wins I chicken out and play Bruisers / Tanks.

Ralanr3 votes

...that is exactly what much of the community hates about assassins man. They are nearly impossible to fight when ahead and no fun to play when behind.

Spaceman5pff1 votes

Much of the VOCAL MINORITY should just not play assassins if they don't like the risk.

Sorry, but if they are going to exist in a healthy way in this game, then they need to be high risk, high reward. Without that, they just become melee burst mages that HAPPEN to sometimes build ad.

Ralanr2 votes

It's not playing them. It's playing against them.

ForeverLaxx1 votes

I'm glad someone other than myself realizes this.

dunkeroni3 votes

My concern is less with me dying in the game, but more about how I die. If I lose to a Zed or Leblanc who can destroy me in under 2 seconds all game, I'll just move on and play another.

If I'm against an Ekko or a Cassiopeia who can permanently slow me while I agonizingly waste everything in a useless attempt to get out of range, then I think I might just go play a different game for the rest of the day.

Awoof7 votes

That's... weird, for me. I'd rather take the eternal slow than the "Hi, boop, dead." At least I or my teammates get the chance to do something.

Braum : don't one-shot me, bro

Dolasaur2 votes

Eh, I can sort of understand because of where the current meta is. But if you go back to the last major assassin meta (late season 4 IIRC), and you die in two seconds to the enemy mid laner in every single game, it made me want to go play a different game for the rest of that meta.

dunkeroni1 votes

At least in the assassin meta, I had the opportunity to use escapes and have a chance to get out of the damage. It was hard to time, but it was at least possible.

Cassiopeia item 3116 won't let me escape, no matter how many dashes, ward hops, or flashes I try.

Jesus Christ I'm so glad someone finally said this. Recently Riot has been creating champions that are supposed to 'still be useful when behind', which just makes them oppressive and unfun while ahead. You should be punished when you play poorly and feed, not rewarded with CC or utility just because.

Ralanr5 votes

Yes, but as I said, it sucks to be incredibly useless when behind.

Champions usually feel overbearing when they're ahead anyway.

ForeverLaxx1 votes

Unfortunately for us, Riot has decided that every player needs to be in a "Feel Good" camp.

It tends to work the other way around. If they're relevant when behind, then riot can push more power out of their snowballing.

Care to give an example? Cause I don't notice.

Annie. They gave her the 'tibbers berserk on death' thing (Annie won't die if ahead) so that they could safely nerf her burst. Making a champion's relevancy when behind stronger requires compensation, and that compensation often comes in the form of nerfs to their snowballing.

Dolasaur1 votes

Total AD versus Bonus AD scaling is another one that's used on many champions. Riven in season 2 is an example; her P and Q used to scale off Bonus AD. They changed that to Total AD and then lowered the ratios a bit, and they made P scale directly with level. So now Riven gets extra P and Q damage from levels, even if she doesn't have the gold for items. And because she had that fallback, they were able to make her early snowballing less strong.

Riot: "He knows too much. SILENCE HIM, KASSADIN!!!"

Kassadin ...

Riot: "Oh, yeah. Sorry about that..."

Tattersall1 votes

I love how the quote that Kassadin says the most is "Silence!"

And then his joke is "I tried to silence my mother once. Boy, did I regret that."

World Ender2 votes

I mean...he still technically silences, just for a fraction of a second.

Tattersall2 votes

Answer me honestly. If someone asked you to explain Kassadin's Q to them, would you say that it has a silence?

Btw, I hope I'm not sounding salty or anything, I play Kassadin and I think he's pretty fine.

Nuparu4 votes

no, it's an interrupt.

World Ender1 votes

Ok, and what is an interrupt but a silence that only lasts enough time for the game to register that a channel has been cancelled? I don't understand why people down vote me for stupid shit.

Nuparu1 votes

i didn't downvote anything idk

i just said what it is

World Ender1 votes

Well so did I. Yet people hate my comment and love yours. Doesn't make sense to me.

Ekko has slows in his kit already, Rylais would still be a bad buy.

Syndra Has a stun, has a slow

Malzahar Has a silence, has a suppression

Still, these champions build it. Also, Riot has confirmed that in the Preseason Update, Ekko will probably lose some of his slows to make Tankko less of a thing.

Syndra Has a stun, has a slow

The slow is the stun if the stun failed to stun, but still hit. Rylai's allows her low cd Q to slow repeatedly so she can chase people.

Malzahar Has a silence, has a suppression

Silences don't impair movement and the suppression is his long cd ult.

In Ekko's case, Ekko has slows in 3/5 possible parts of his kit where he could have one (Q, passive, W if no stun). Why would he need a slow if the majority of his kit slows?

syndra has a slow on her w, and her stun is her e.

I deserve to be flayed for that one honestly.

Yes, flay is a slow too. That's why Thresh doesn't buy it either.

Thresh item 3742 item 3025

It isn't just AP / AD thresh that can deliver a swift autoattack of JUSTICE.

Steelflame2 votes

Thresh is ranged, he doesn't get the DMP slow/damage on auto.

It's a knockback if it fails to stun.

Syndra's W (Force of Will) is the slow.

Don't worry, Ezreal will destroy an item like that so hard, it'll never see the light of the actual season.

Assassins are getting more tools because as a class they are outclassed by other classes, namely mages as there is no reason to take an assassin mid and lose out on the utility mages bring as assassins don't bring any utility besides pick potential. It is VERY tellling that the class needs buffs (in the form of more tools) when the champions they supposedly counter are picked (cass, syndra) but nary an assassin in sight for worlds.

Fizz is getting more laning tools (because he basically has almost none) and he's getting more initiation tools to push his unique style further. For a champion that relies on getting ahead or being useless and having one of the worst lane phases in league if the opponent knows how to actually play the game is absolute god awful. Then you have champions like cass that are just oppressive all game.

What they should do is give assassins actual assassin tools, such as talon's blades isolating his target (anyone inside the blades can't see outside and vice versa), push fizz's dodge mechanics even further (assassins tend to be very hard to hit as they are evasive and fizz is as slippery as the best), have Akali temp blind her target (assassins already counter ADCS), push leblanc's trickery and illusion mechanics further etc. Give them actual tools to play with their targets rather than needing to 100 - 0 in .5 seconds or less or insta die.

It's disgusting how mismatched your version of Riot is with reality. Their tendency to undertune new/reworked champions/items is the stuff of legends and you still manage to ignore it.

maikokk2 votes

its way better than their previous tendency of making everything broken until it is played. i think the aftertaste of that is still fresh in everyone's minds.

80961062_DEL3 votes

I can feel it in my bones. Just add 15 magic penetration and it's a "Well Balanced" item.

Chlululu2 votes

you realize your version of rylais gives a mage everything they need in 1 item plus more, i doubt they're that stupid tbh

It honestly would be way more scary if other champs get their hands on such a rylais.....like brand or cassio or victor
