Gameplay is too quick to judge based on what they think is OP...

...and NOT the factors that lead to that champion being strong.

If a champion suddenly propels upwards/downwards in playrate, winrate or otherwise, look for major factors:

  • Was this champion buffed or nerfed?
  • Was an item this champion used buffed or nerfed?
  • Was a counterpick for them nerfed?
  • Was a pick they counter buffed?
  • Was he/she/it played by a pro?

Far too often, Gameplay seems only concerned about what has happened (AHRI HAS A 54% WIN RATE AND PLAYED IN PRO GAMES REEEEEEEEEEEE) and not everything that lead to it happening (Ahri's counters were nerfed, less point-and-click CC, etc.). When you only care about the result and not what led up to that change, you're not truly solving the problem. You're just making another result that will lead to another reactionary change.

Sure, that's not always the case (Graves, Lee Sin, etc. tend to be strong for a while instead of selectively strong) but more often those champions being propelled to great picks aren't because they're suddenly busted and need nerfs; It's because the game changed around them and they became strong via outside factors.

Not like Ahri's been strong for pretty much every single patch ever or anything.

"Pickable" =/= "OP"

Ahri was a decent pick for several patches. Is suddenly broken when everything else is nerfed or changed around her.

She's not broken. She's just too too safe and versatile. And has been a good pick for just about every single patch she's in due to how she has just about every single possible thing in her kit. Sure, OP picks would overshadow her. She's still one of the top beneath them and is one of the top when they get nerfed, as well as in playrate.

Well, being a good pick isn't exactly a bad thing.

Yeah, but the reason she's been a good pick through just about every single patch she's been in is because she's extremely safe and mobile yet always deadly threatening and lethal the second she lands a E. And outside of all-ins or poke, there's next to nothing her kit doesn't have. Sustain, hard mobility (can go over walls, is a dash), soft mobility (Q bonus MS), magic damage, skillshots, targeted, hard CC, good waveclear, range, and true damage. The only things pretty much missing that are relevant are physical damage (which doesn't matter since she's a mage) and percent health damage.

Her Q could count for poke as well, due to it's travel speed and movespeed buff which artificially extend their range based on distance from Ahri.

But still, isn't that ideal? A good, strong, kit that's not broken. Isn't that the best spot for someone to be in?

Her sustain is honestly nothing to write home about in laning phase. Sure, it's pretty good, but compared to other champions with sustain, it's pretty abysmal. She needs to spend a boatload of mana early-game to get more than a potion's worth of heal off of it, or be either very far behind or very far ahead (because you simply can't get a very large minion wave in midlane if both outer turrets are up). Now, LATE-game, it's pretty busted (I've hit upwards of 60 health per minion hit), but, in late-game, it's rather irrelevant, because you either didn't get hit (very much), or you were hit so hard you're either forced to back or dead. At the same time, that's about when simply having red buff heals for upwards of 25 health per second out-of-combat. I really doubt that saying that spending 200+ mana for a potion in lane is that accurate. :P

ahri has always had a high winrate she didnt just suddenly become good shes been that way for a while

what you really mean to say is

nobody really cared to notice until she was picked in the pro scene

The other thing is her win-rate was fairly static. Hovering around 50-ish percent. Slowly, as things changed around her, she got better.

Leblanc got nerfed, one of Ahri's main(and VERY popular) counters, that's a pretty big reason.

North of 52% winrate/10% playrate for two straight years is rather the opposite of balanced.

I was one of the ones who got Lux nerfed for something similar. Trust me, Ahri's reckoning is looooong overdue.

ModCaptainMårvelous2 votes

I don't exactly think 52% win rate is unbalanced.

48-52% should be the aim, with most champions hovering around that point. 52% is a lot different than 54 or 56%

Until you factor playrate into it.

Normal winrates should be for normal playrates, and Ahri's playrate has been anything but normal.
