Question?

A lot of champions who used to have point n' click Qs now have aimed Qs. Like Zilean, Veigar, Ryze, etc. My question is, will this theme continue? Will champions who have extremely useful Q's that are point n'click be changed to skillshot Q's?

In a word: Yes.

The reasons for this are several and somewhat complicated. I go into more detail on my thoughts on the topic in This Thread where I discuss how mobility and skill shots evolved together (or at least, my analysis on the matter. I've been around a while)

However in general yes, this will continue. If you look at recent Champion releases, they are almost entirely Skill Shot based.

Huh, this makes sense. But with the whole "Balance of power" thing going on, wouldn't it be more reliable to have less mobile champions have some sort of defensive or point and click defensive ability to make up for the lack of being able to reliably dodge skillshots? Wouldn't it also be more "balanced" to have champions who don't have many skill shot abilities to become somewhat less mobile? Also, what you said about Lee Sin was pretty spot on, that's impressive.

As for your idea - yes. Notice that the most popular immobile champions (think Syndra, Vel'Koz) also have some kind of CC or defensive abilities, or some way to self-peel. Syndra has an unreliable stun that, if used right, can stun multiple Champions. Vel Koz has a long range 1-or-2-target slow and a fast, short range knock up that he can use to keep himself safe.

Compare this to, say, Kog'Maw, who is very immobile and has no defensive or peeling other than his crappy slow. Kog, despite his high power potential, is very unpopular because he can't complete with mobility.

To a degree this is okay for some Champions. 1 on 1, Kog'Maw can eat through tanks and has such a high late game damage output that he doesn't need to protect himself - he just eats you instead. But in a coordinated effort against a full team, he's extremely vulnerable. So he's not very often used at higher levels of play.

So an immobile champion either needs defensive/CC abilities to make up for their vulnerability, or else should have a high enough power scaling that the trade off is worth it.

I'm feeling it probably will. The main reason they are shifting away from them is because they offer extremely free, easy power. Since RIOT has been pushing "counterplay" around S4, they've been changing things to help make it possibly to actually have some "counterplay". Zilean is a good example. All he had to do in lane was just walk into spell range, put his Q on you, then walk away. It might be okay at HIGH levels of play to be able to do this, but at low levels it is incredibly abuseable and punishing towards the person playing against it. With the change to it being a skill shot, if you DO land it, his Q and Double Q are stronger then his old one, but it is harder to land, so people don't play it as often. Veigar and Ryze went the same way. By changing it to a skill shot, it just isn't a free "I win" button anymore and requires you to actually land it. Also in terms of "balancing" it, it should be easier to buff/nerf these abilities because if its just a point click spell, usually the champion will get nerfed to the ground where they don't see the light of day again. Also by making the champions a bit more "complex" they are more fun to play and more rewarding when executed correctly.
