@Meddler, Who Do You Want Building Challenging Smite, Again?
With the newest nerfs to Challenging Smite coming soon on the PBE (reduction of the Mark from 6 seconds to 4 seconds), it leaves me asking the question: Who is supposed to be building this item?
We all know why the item is being nerfed. Because it's become so famous in top lane and apparently that's a bad thing. The problem is, you're nerfing the jungler's item because the top laners are abusing it, and that didn't work out the way you wanted it with the Spirit of the Elder Lizard/Ancient Golem/Spectral Wraith line in Season 4, did it?
But I digress. Let's take a look at the new item, and see exactly who should be building it:
Challenging Smite - You can cast Smite on enemy champions, marking them for 6 4 seconds. While marked, you have vision of the enemy champion (unless they're stealthed), you receive 20% reduced damage from them, and your auto attacks deal an additional 54+(6*level) true damage over 3 seconds (54 damage per second at level 18).
So, how does the nerf affect the item? Well, the Smite does 3 things, and the 33% reduction in duration significantly affects each of those three things:
-
The reduction in time means that in order to use the reveal effect correctly, you must Smite just before an enemy Flashes over a wall or walks into a brush (so that you have vision in order to gap close over that wall with your Leap Attack/Alpha Strike/whatever).
-
The reduction in time means that instead of promoting an extended, 6 second duel with an enemy bruiser, you now want to use the Smite to reduce damage taken from a champion with high burst. So...instead of using the true damage over time to kill tanks, you want to use the damage reduction to survive and kill assassins/mages.
-
The reduction in time means that the total damage of the Smite drops significantly. Currently, Challenging Smite deals 486 true damage over 9 seconds if you auto attack the enemy enough to reset the ticks over the entire 6 second duration. For comparison, Ignite deals 410 true damage at level 18 over 5 seconds while also applying Grievous Wounds. I'm not entirely sure on the math here, but if we assume that a 33% reduction in duration leads to a 33% reduction in damage, then Challenging Smite's damage drops to 325. This is obviously the intention of the nerf, so...I guess it's a good thing?
Now we get to the crux of the issue. Who is supposed to build this item in the jungle now? A champion who auto attacks enough to use the item, but is also sticky enough that they do not want Chilling Smite instead. A champion who is tanky enough to receive the full benefit of a 20% damage reduction for 4 seconds, but who clears well enough that they don't need Ranger's Trailblazer...
I mean, right now I've seen Evelynn build this Smite with Cinderhulk, but with the reduced duration I'm not sure if it'd even be worth it for her. Irelia is another champion that comes to mind, I guess. Maybe Olaf? No, Olaf needs the move speed from Chilling Smite.
Well Riot? Who in the jungle is going to use this new, weaker Skirmisher's Sabre?
