What's the point of playing ranked?

I get zero satisfaction from it. I do well all the time yet still lose. I can't counter streaks.

Playing ranked is voluntarily sacrificing fun for an emblem. What's the point?

At the current moment, it only takes one person to fuck the game instead of an entire team. Add the fact that if you dodge more than twice due to bad drafts by these said people who fuck the game, and you land a half an hour cooldown. They need to take the next preseason to just...fix ranked. I don't need any class updates or shit like that anymore, I just want the queue to be less aids as it is now. Games get lost at draft more times than not and dodging is better than obtaining the worst comp ever made because people "have the right idea". I hit Diamond and as it stands, wont get any farther than d5 the way things are now.

iV0lt4GE1 votes

IMO, I look to see that they remove power from supports and give it to mid or even toplane so that it gives more potential for other lanes to carry other than just having only bot lane be the primary carries and the other lanes to be just backups. I also think that they need to reward people for being better than their opponent like reducing ways for opponents to come back or remove catchup exp from all lanes.

Ragnaveil1 votes

Issue is that ADs get their items faster than any other role, so if your ad gets absolutely dumpstered, you cant really do much about it. They need to shift power around so that we get rid of the "one person can fuck the game for you" situation of ranked. Also make it so that dodging in high elo isn't so expensive (because bad drafts=easier to lose, but this is like the least of my concerns), I dodged once, lost 3+ lp, dodged a second time, 20. Like jesus, make it scale by 3 every time, and have it reset on Friday or some shit. The only catchup exp issue is with the jungle. The jg can camp lanes like top or bot for 3 minutes, and catch right back up in exp to a heavy farm jg like Yi or Shyvana. I do feel like they are slowly removing power from support at the moment, but its currently not enough to warrant it as a "power shift".

iV0lt4GE1 votes

I would hope that they fix this during midseason in 8.10 since they said it would be about ADC and see if it would impact other lanes in a good way.

Ragnaveil1 votes

Yeah, because at this point, the reason why top becomes more autofill higher up is that even if you snowball, your ad tends to be the more important amount of damage than you being fed. Hopefully they make soloqueue soloqueue again, while keeping the team aspect of the game intact. That is likely what they will aim for along side the AD update (which is funny since they had a update back in s6) hopefully.

Ranked is so messed up its not funny.

From the new 30s dropped into Silver (ruining silver players from climbing) and the Scripter/Smurfs that are bored and only gain happiness if they ruin someones elses, there is no reason to play.

Some players have a more competitive side compared to others. One of my friends will play ONLY ranked, their reason: "If i win a game of norms, i get XP, if i win a game of ranked, i get the same thing + LP. If i an get to gold or higher, it's a skin that you couldn't get otherwise." If your trying out fun things like Taric top, go norms. But if your going to just try anyway with real picks and real builds, then your losing nothing by going ranked

I guess if you're high elo, that makes sense. But what about people in bronze like me? If by some act of God I do manage to climb I just get in to silver... where Riot dumps all the people new to ranked anyways. I've got nothing to prove to anyone either. I'm not some streamer that needs to teach people how to play the game. I'm not on a team. I main support, and when I play I'm pretty much forced in to a role I don't want to play and don't have fun playing (tanks) because no one else wants to pick one. When I do get winstreaks that boost up my MMR, it just sends me back down with the counter loss streak. I lose and lose and lose, and I expect to lose whenever I go back on a winstreak because that's just how the game works.

I'm bad, I know. I look at my own faults and try to see what I'm doing wrong. But when I have a teammate that goes 1/12, in a lane I'm not even in, what do I do about that? How am I supposed to overcome that? I don't have plat level mechanics or game sense. I wouldn't know if people in silver do either, but I assume they're not since they're in silver. I play champs that are unfun, lose in streaks, sometimes regardless of my own actual performance, and I never get anywhere. And maybe it's just my own skill. Maybe I'll just be bronze forever, and I can't get better and I just have to accept that. Then what's the point of playing ranked? It's unfun, forces me in to things I don't want to play, and makes me sit through games that I just lose LP and demote in, sometimes completely independent of my own performance.

In normals at least, I can play whatever I want. There's no metric I have to worry about. I don't OPGG people to see what elo they're in in ranked because it doesn't matter to me. I just want to have fun games. I want to see myself playing well, and while winning is good and all, it's a game, first and foremost. I want to have fun. I'd like it if my teammates had fun, but I won't deny that I'm a little bit selfish. I want to have fun, and it doesn't feel like I can do that in ranked. It's inherently unfun because you have to treat it as a job, worrying about the upkeep on your rank rather than noticing little tidbits in the game that can make yourself better at it like I do in norms.

And I've tried to get better. I've watched streams. I've had people I play with try to coach me. And I do feel like I've learned some things from all of that, but what do I do when I get teammates that maybe haven't, and proceed to lose their T2 while I'm still in laning phase with my ADC? Do I need to roam all over the map to help them and forget about my ADC? Do I need to play like Aphromoo to win games in bronze? I just don't see any way to progress, which is the primary objective in ranked. It seems utterly pointless to me. It's no fun, it's not rewarding, and there's no reason for me to do it.

in order to win in this game you have to duo with a guy that isnt braindead like literally 90% of people in bronze to diamond. take it like this, every game you have a 90% chance to get one guy that ints his lane and you lose the game. so you have a 90% chance to insta lose the game without it being your fault. riot refuses to fix this because the game is about 'teamplay'

I don't think you're at the point where you should be giving up yet.

Like sure, I've seen plenty of people who have been stuck in whatever division (even Bronze) for years and years, and for them I'd agree that Ranked is not worth it. The point of Ranked (imo) is to push yourself to improve and watch the results as you get better and better each season. So if you're just playing for fun, or you're semi-competitive but not making any progress, then you may as well spare yourself the stress of Ranked.

But you've only been playing for 3 Seasons. I may be a little off, but it looks like you got to Level 30 in Season 5, you played a bit of Ranked in Season 6, and started taking it more seriously last season and got better. And now it looks like you can make it to Silver pretty easily this season, if you continue on that path. And maybe Gold, or higher, in years beyond.

I mean, it's totally up to you, whether you think it's worth it or not. Whether it's something you care about. Or maybe Ranked just isn't fun for you, and fun is what you're here for, so screw it.

I'm just saying, you haven't been playing for long enough to be jaded about it. You haven't reached your peak. And you shouldn't feel forced to give up on the competition, unless you want to.

I just want to put it in perspective that, like, you don't need to be in a hurry to Win Ranked and climb super fast. You can play it like it's normals, and if you climb a few divisions each Season, great, you're doing fine. If you enjoy the competition, then just play the game for what it is, take the wins where you can get them, and accept the losses as "good practice".

Its simply personal satisfaction. If it isn't fun for you, don't play it.

Personally, while I understand your viewpoint, and can empathize with the frustration of the current state of the game, I still find enjoyment in winning and having a good match, even if its only once in a blue moon

If you still play, i have an idea of what to do to climb out of bronze. I am a old fart, and i dont play that many games or tryhard whatsoever. But i managed to get to gold 4 this season before a little loosing streak put me back to gold 5.

First rule: Do not continue playing if you loose two games in a row, and play a normal to warm up before playing ranked and check your daily form. Loosing streaks mess up your mmr and makes it very hard to climb. I was about to get demoted from Gold 5 because of a low MMR. And it did not get better even after a winning streak that took me from G5 0 LP- G4 50 LP. I gain less for a win and loose more from a loss. So climbing is still hard.

Second rule: Play one role, and maximum 5 champs that you are good with. I climbed from silver 5 to gold 4 this season playing support. I had a win ratio of 58% when i hit gold 5. After i got to gold i neglected my first rule, and played tilted and had two gigantic loosing streaks.

In my experience these champions is your best bet: In bronze play blitzcrank and leona, they are very effective in bronze because people are always out of position, especially if they are fed. Just engage or pull yourself to easy wins.

Blitz and leona are effective in all games in low elo, but in silver and gold i go to my main soraka+ similar champs (Nami, lulu, janna) and Zilean. My goal is similar on all these champs, to make sure the one fed guy on our team never dies and to feed them kills. Preferably the adc, but if hes not up to the job, i forget him all together.

Third rule: Mute all is mandatory. You write in cooldowns, watch objective timers, jungler positions, and ping people back. Thats it.

Fourth rule: Place good wards. Wards have one purpose in the laning phase, to find out where the jungler is. If hes not seen in the bot jung or river, you can assume he is in the top side jung. Watch your laners and ping them back if they are overextended. This will also give you much better map awareness, and you will prevent many deaths in other lanes with good pings and call outs of the junglers position in chat.

The most important thing as a utility support is positioning, and to use your abilities on the right target. This comes with experience, but you have to focus on this when you play to get said experience. Despite what people say about utility supports not being able to carry, well its not true. Everyone needs teammates to win, even fed master yi`s (If they are not smurfing). On my way to gold, i won many games where my midlaner or top was 0/5 after 10 mins. And expect to loose games, even if you play well. Its the nature of the game.

In normals you have people constantly trying out new things and testing the limits which often fail.

If you are in low elo, there's honestly no point to play rank. I met less trolls/afker/leaver/inters in normal draft than in ranked. And people in normal are usually much less toxic than in rank, even if you try non-meta champ/build and feed. Because there are much less stake(LP) involved. [sg-miss-fortune] If I get bored or tilted in draft, I play ARAM or the rotating game mode.

The problem with this game is that one awesome person can't carry a game anymore, but one person can cause you to lose the game...

That's disheartening and discouraging. It's a terrible system and honestly, this is what makes me the most toxic. It has nothing to do with players, or the game itself it's what Riot is turning this game into where I am literally at the mercy of having "decent" teammates and I hope that the enemy team has more dumbasses than my team -- because that's the only way I win, personal performance isn't nearly as a contributing factor to wins anymore.

TheLegendaddy2 votes

There really is no point in playing ranked, unless you have a group of friends you're trying to outdo by ranking the highest "for fun". Yes there is the free skin but they're not that great in quality anyway. Honestly Riot even does a terrible job giving you a point to play ranked, it's not accessible and they've done nothing to make it a fun part of the game. There are multiple ways to make it appealing but I think they're too busy with e"sport" and microtransactions to make this a good game

MMR should be calculated by personal performance and not win/lose ratio.

That's the problem.

Even if you are awesome, if the other 4 guys on your team suck that basically means you will lose -- LoL is so much a team based game now you can't solo carry really unless you're a god ADC - but even to do that you need decent supports, and peel.

Scary Door2 votes

"Sorry guys I know we're going to lose this game but I'm going to just sit and farm top so I get 400cs to bring up my MMR"

"Go in? Why would I do that, then my K/D/A would get worse and that would ruin my MMR"

"Why would I want to play support, that means I don't get good K/D/A/ and my MMR won't go up"

"Guys, we're way ahead in this game, why bother taking objectives, let's just farm kills by picking people off in the jungle and artificially inflate our MMR"

See the problem?

Wins and losses should be the only determining factor.

I mean, imagine if that logic were applied to other sports... "...we know the Astros had the best team, but we're giving the world Series Trophy to the 25 individuals with the best stats in baseball"

Just. No.

TheLegendaddy2 votes

400 cs with no kill participation would not increase MMR

again, no kill participation would mean no increase to MMR

Kill participation (kills and assists) outweigh death count

Objectives and siege damage are taken into account. (or else it wouldn't be a stat you can readily view at game summary)

So no I don't see the problem yet.

Comparing it to a pro sport is a bad analogy...pros play with the same people every day. Solo queue is a random ass grab bag of RNG players.

So yes, in this case, individual skill should determine how much LP you gain or lose. If you perform well (now remember that doesn't just mean kda, this is not COD) be that siege damage, kill participation, damage blocked, damage mitigated, etc. then maybe you don't lose 15LP for losing, you lose 5LP.

This game is more team based now than it has ever been. You really have to depend on your team more than ever in order to win. You are basically at the mercy of luck if your team is bad.

I climbed through silver rather easy and got to Gold 5... Now I seem like I am stuck here and I know it doesn't have as much to do with my personal skill, I know I should be even higher. I would say 60% of my losses are due to 2 or more players on my team just being so bad and the other team just snow balls the lead.

Last season I peaked at about G1-G2 MMR and I could say the game was actually easier or even more fun then... Know why? It seemed like my teammates were more dependable and had more awareness of the game and wins were much easier to achieve because of that. Don't know how many games I been stuck in Gold 5 but I want out, playing with guys that give up 9 kills in less than 7-10 mins is not fun at all.

EDIT - I just got out of a match where my team got behind pretty fast. I told them to stop fighting and just wave clear until our JG and ADC can catch up... But what did they do? They fought. They got caught. And they chased. So they died even more. The other team was grouping hardcore and snowballing their lead. I knew what I needed to do in that situation... Wave clear, and try to avoid fights unless its with team under towers -- which my team didn't want to do. Our jungler was pretty irrelevant, as Yi he had 2 kills 4 deaths and 1 assists... And those kills came much later in the match meanwhile their JG was snowballing lanes throughout the entire game while our JG was mostly absent. Our support was constantly getting caught and our MID was getting wrecked by a Ryze... 2 of them were seriously fed while their ADC wasn't far behind... So how do you overcome that situation? You don't. And even if you are a decent or good player you get punished for braindead teammates all the same. This aspect of LoL is what makes me toxic, it doesn't matter how exceptional I play in a game if we lose I get ZERO recognition for my personal play.

Believe me when I say I'm not a Riot defender, most of my posts would say quite the opposite really... but one thing I can say that Riot has attempted to do over the last few years (and has been successful at doing) is turning the game toward a team-based system... which is what it was intended to be... So, I have to give them credit for it. You may not like it and, dammit, most of the time I don't like it, but that's the direction that they wanted to go.

In Season 1, when I started, it was a bit harder to snowball, but if you got significantly ahead you could carry the game by yourself, now getting that far ahead was harder to do and comebacks were more likely back then, but one thing that people complained about was that teamplay was optional. It is not optional anymore.

Season 4 through 7 I was Plat. Plat 4, 5, 3, 4 respectively----could I have climbed higher? Maybe, but I just didn't have the desire to put in the extra time needed to do it, so I was where I belonged realistically. If you're stuck in Gold 5, that's probably an indicator of where you should be (depending on how many games you've played, of course. If you have only played 50-75 games this season then I'd say give it another 75 and see where you are). Granted, if you were Gold 1 last season then there's no reason you couldn't get back there.

Promos are really about the most frustrating part of League. I wish they'd just go back to the visible Elo system.

EDIT - I just got out of a match where my team got behind pretty fast. I told them to stop fighting and just wave clear until our JG and ADC can catch up... But what did they do? They fought. This season just sucks out loud. The two previous seasons (six and seven) have been disappointing from a game balance and pace-of-play standpoint, but this is---by far---the worst season of any. I feel like matchmaking has taken a decided turn for the worse and Riot doesn't seem to be too eager to fix that. Games are complete stomps one way or the other. I can't honestly tell you the last time I was in a close game... and I have a pretty decent memory (might have been December/January but I can't nail it down).

So, I hear your frustrations, but sadly this is the path Riot is taking the game and there's nothing we can do about it.

"Personal Performance" does NOT automatically equate to K/D/A. Your letter grade at the end isn't just KDA. I'm not saying THAT should be the standard, but if Riot put some REAL effort into it, they could find a way to "adequately" rate individual performance. Here's the trade you get: So, let's PRETEND that you have people that keep trying (all the surrender spams would argue that, but let's roll with it) even when the game is "lost" because a comeback is possible. So instituting this change will make less people do that.
OTOH, here's what you potentially gain: POSSIBLY (not assured) reduced toxicity because you no longer worry about random idiots screwing your LP/Promos. (I feel less agitations and see LESS (not zero) bitching in normals for this reason) Less impact from afks/dcs/trolls because now your individual performance affects your rank rather than just whether you won or lost. (afks and dcs still hurt overall beause 4v5 will likely mean reduced performance, even on an individual level) EASIER to clear out smurfs, because a single good performance can potentially mean a big boost POTENTIALLY smash boosters, since the person they're boosting gets SIGNIFICANTLY less gain if they don't contribute

Hell, the whole "selfish attitude" problem strikes me as a red herring ANYWAY because half the advice from high elo to low elo for "how to climb" amounts to "your teammates are garbage, turn off chat, ignore them entirely and do what you need to do to win" so again, I don't really see that making rank based on individual performance would have a significant impact on play-style for MOST people.

Competition is to compete, people compete to test how good they are against the average, and see how they compare to the collective. Then those who aren't satisfied with their apparent slot in the pecking order try to improve and then try to climb that pecking order once again. That's competition, it's work for reward, it's something to say "I'm good at this, better than the rest" .

yes...that seems to be the definition of competitive, but if one person can throw a game, what did it matter how good YOU were? :) you lost, so you look like the same trash.

That's just how it is, this is a team game, you win and lose as a team. Sometimes when you win and were carried you look better than what you are, it works both ways.

As a silver player for the last 3 years, I wouldn't play zero ranked games if they had no victorious skin as a prize for gold

So to make sense of your negative filled sentence...

You would play ranked even if there wasn't a victorious skin?

for the skin... i dislike ranked, but that free skin is so tempting.

climbing after gold has no purpose, unless you can actually get into lcs/high elo streaming i guess.

They told me i get free women sportscars and money for climbing each division, i hope its true otherwise rank would just be a useless pixelated egobooster right?

I find that ranked games are slightly better than normal games.

The point of Ranked, since Season 3, is to play Ranked. People claim it is a sign of ability, but all it boils down to is who plays MORE ranked than who. When you can buy bot leveled Platinum accounts for 20$ a pop on a dozen websites... the point of Ranked is to play Ranked.

Pro Teams have sponsors, lacking this you will never be in a major tournament.

To get the free rewards from gold+ asap so I can stop hating myself over the massive variance I see in teammate ability/judgment from game to game.

Got my stuff so i dont care anymore.
