How do I get in to other roles as a support main?

Worst Kench NA··5 votes·1,547 views

I main support, and I've been trying to get in to other roles but I'm finding it really difficult. Morgana is the only real mid I can play, and I'm clueless when it comes to all the other roles. I've been trying to practice in norms but all that ever happens is that I get stomped and lose because most other people aren't practicing their off roles. How do I play other stuff besides support?

As a fellow support main, who went to top and then back to support... best thing is to go into practice tool or a custom and practice cs'ing with who you want to play.

If you like tank supports-> try top

If you like mage/utility mages -> try mid or ivern jg XD

If you feel like you want to help lanes outplay jg (i think of it as just roaming support, but meh you do you)

I think the biggest thing about laning is farming and learniong how to farm under pressure. Going into customs to reach 100 cs by 10 min solo, then working up into trying to get that while under heavy poke from like Brand bot or Ziggs bot, I feel like you will start doing better. If the other laner is stomping you in lane, as long as you can play safe and still keep up farm somehow, it won't matter because you will still be useful later in the game.

If you're going for jg as a role, try keeping track of the other jg to avoid getting counter jg'd over and over, and learn more about jg paths and the most efficient way to clear your jg while maintaining good map presence through ganks.

That's my advice... Hope it helps! [slayer-jinx-catface]

Just play them consistently and practice, lots of practice. Play around with different champions, find one that you like most (kit wise and playstyle) and practice them, once you're comfortable laning solo and csing while being harassed efficiently, you can learn other champions and learn with those guys too.

As others have mentioned, it takes practice, and you'll only get better as you play more games in off-roles. If your trouble with other roles comes down to specific champions and their kits, then it might help to transition using similar champions that are capable of supporting: tank supports like Braum or Leona could help get a better grip on solo tanks, and mage supports like Morgana (excellent pick, by the way) or even Brand can help you get more comfortable with mages in solo lanes. If you want to go a little bit beyond your comfort zone, autoattacker supports like Bard and Lulu could help teach you the attack-moving that is core to marksmen.

Alternatively, if the issue is simply that you're still struggling with the dynamics of different positions, I think jungling could help the most: the position is very light on solo PvP combat in most cases, unless you're against an invader jungler or choose to play one yourself, and much of the role's responsibility during the laning phase boils down to helping other lanes, especially bot lane. Champions like Ivern, Nautilus and Nunu all have a lot of similarities to laning supports, which could help you segue into support-y jungling, and afterwards the jungler roster is so diverse that you can then pick more independent junglers in the future, such as Jarvan IV, Trundle and Twitch, all of whom are also capable of laning (Trundle can support as well). Once you get more comfortable with these champions and how they work, try them out in solo lanes and see how they function there, and from there you'll be able to have more fallback options for every position.

Dedication. Consistency. Practice. You cannot get good at something just by doing it a few times.

Okay, but how can I learn anything when I get constantly destroyed by people that have been playing those roles for much longer than I have?

Streams.

I think you should start with learning adc since you already know the lane. Becoming a better adc will also help you become better at support (and vse versa)

As a support main myself, that pretty much how I got started. But to be honest, ADC is probably my least favorite role right now. (Since your only Job is DPS, you become next to useless if you fall behind. And your whole team depends on you.)

Personally, it more about the Champion than it is about the role. Of coarse there's an aspect about farming, which can be stressful, Knowing the champions is the fundamental key to wining match ups. If you are too stressed to practice the role in Norms, try learning your champions in other game modes.

I'm also a support main and have tried to branch out more. I found adc a good place to start because you need to work closely with support so it helped a lot. Although it's a difficult role to succeed at, it gets a bit easier with the familiarity and help.

Also, ivern is a good intro character to jungle when you're used to support. After I played him a bit I felt comfortable enough to branch out.

Personally I always spend some time in the practice tool with new champs and roles and that seems to help.

Try a tank top, malzahar mid, or a tank jungle. If your gold or below you can even pull out something like Yi jungle especially since ardent supports are gone.

I would suggest making a smurf account to learn new roles. After runes change, you can just make a new account and not worry about being at a disadvantage.

If you play and lose more normals, your normals mmr will fall, and eventually you'll be able to go toe to toe with people when playing your off-roles regardless of if they happen to main the role or not.

Give Shen a shot, pretty straight forward to play.
