is there any downside to an early spellthief's on any ap champion?

It gives a bit of AP and 2gp10, which really adds up as the game progresses. It feels really strong throwing it on my galio or lux mid and just selling it once I can't spend anymore gold

well read the description.KILLING A UNIT DISABLES PASSIVE FOR 12 SEC ,but if u manage to farm and get gold from item its really nice

I see it used, I feel kind of meh about it. Since you will presumably be killing minions in lane, you only benefit from the 2gp10. It takes 17.5 minutes for it to break even on gold if you sell it (less time if you are able to get the tribute procs off before CSing) and it gives a paltry 5 AP.

Meh, the real power of the item comes from Frost Queen's Claim. Not only is the active strong, but the passive allows you to pay for the item in less than 20 minutes. Though it does take up an item slot that could be used for more powerful items, so I think the item is good, but not as insanely good as everyone is making it out to be.

it's insanely good because of the Spooky Ghosts passive and how quickly it allows you to farm up other big AP items.

You normally sell it for a Luden's, Morello's, or Athene's come late-game though because they offer more AP.

Doran's ring gives you health, mana regen, AP, and Mana refund on killing a unit. These are all things that will help a mage survive a solo lane.

Spellthief's Edge gives you Much less AP, Much less mana regen, 2g per ten, and a gold passive that doesn't synergize at all with what you want to do in lane.

One is meant to help with lane sustain and the other is to help a duo partner stay relevant in gold income. That's not to say Frost Queen's Claim can't be taken first, that item is way too versatile and cost efficient right now

Yes, ryze doesn't want that shit.

Ryze isn't an AP champion.

Ryze scales both with ap and mana.

Go Dorans into frost queens please, spellthiefs is a joke on a solo laner

You lose extra ap for gold, which could theoretically be obtained in equal by farming at increased speed

Because creeps are going to spawn at a faster rate simply because you have more AP.

I honestly think it's worth getting Spellthief over Doran's. I play Heimer mid, so can stay out and farm for a while. When I go back, I'm rich enough to snowball from the AP of my new item. Dorans isn't much better than Spellthief- its a starter item. Its about gameplay that early. And gaining more gold early on is more advantageous than a few more AP and a slight Health bonus.

I think if you plan to passively farm, won't get poked, trade damage, or get all-in'd, it might not be too bad to start Spellthief. But overall I think Doran's is a much better starter for non-Support. What I've been doing (if I'm not Support) is starting Doran's Ring, and building components of Frost Queen after backing (Fiendish Codex, Faerie Charm, if not enough to straight up buy Frost Queen.) A little slower than starting Spellthief, but it gives you more safety and presence in lane.

I think you forget the added gold for a basic attack against enemy champions. After a short CD, spellthief grants you gold by simply clicking your opponent. Spellthief is great for passive farming, but it's even better for active farming. When it comes down to it, time is your greatest enemy. The faster you can farm and level, the better. Getting quick farm will allow you to overpower your opponent after the first back.

That "short cooldown" is fairly significant if you're continuously farming. Every time you kill a minion, it's reset to 12 seconds where Tribute is disabled. While there's a wave of minions, you will not be making use of Spellthief's Tribute.

If you are being activate with trades, it depends on which enemy Champion you're facing, because as mentioned above they will have the raw stats ahead of you if they started Doran's vs. your Spellthief.

I didn't mean as a starting item, but I don't ever start Doran's nowadays either. Dark Seal is the best starting item but having a FQC on hand is really helpful

It depends on what you were going to start. If you were going to start dorans, then not really. If you were going to start with an actual item then it delays your build path.
