Why do reds ignore every Lee Sin thread?
Like, every single one.
Like, every single one.
Nothing to see here folks... move along...
Only Kidding! I don't think we have anything against talking about Lee Sin, we just don't comment on every thread that pops up on the boards.
On subject, there is a lot to talk about with Lee Sin as a champion. Just to name a few things:
He's fun as hell with a high skill cap and lots of depth to his play (love this)
He is pretty unfocused, and this is more of a symptom of the older champ development style that he was created in (see irelia etc). The question of "what makes lee sin special as a champ?" isn't easy to answer - is it mobility, tankiness, damage, who knows. He definitely needs a bit more focus, and that probably involves both toning down some of his unnecessary strengths and pumping up the things that are what make him really unique.
At any given time he may be a little strong or a little weak like any other champion. Number tuning happens a lot and our Live Balance team works full time to do this kind of work. If we aren't addressing champs that are out of balance as quickly as we should, it's fair to call us out.
Last thing, and this is more about just our resources and time - we can definitely make him a better champ, but there are 122 other champions in the game and IMO some need updating more than he does. (fully stacked urgot tear).
EDIT: A lot of you think that he is a very high priority problem right now holding back a lot of other junglers. We will take a serious look at where he is at currently in terms of pushing out other jungler's viability.
... You just described every generalist champion in the game... and everyone of them but Lee was hard nerfed... repeatedly... while being played much much less and and being much less game changing or dominant in pick.
Lee Sin has been nerfed many times in the past and if he continues to dominate he will be again. Sorry if that wasn't clear above.
hmmm wasn't he the most dominant jungler pick in competitive for what 4 seasons now? Doesn't that seem a bit too dominant to you?
Lee Sin has been nerfed before, but NEVER quickly, and NEVER like other champs are (hi Olaf!). While it's nice that he's no longer considered an extremely strong pick mid and top any more(though he can still do both just fine), it would be nice if he was nerfed a little more so he wasn't a necessary pick or ban for once in the jungle. Maybe we could at least try that for one patch, just to see what happens?
I think Lee hasn't been nerfed as hard or as quickly as champs like Olaf because nothing he does is straight up overpowered. He is consistent because he fits with just about any team comp, similar to Orianna or Thresh.
Yes, Lee does make some pretty insane plays, but it requires someone skilled playing him to do that. On that note, because he doesn't have instant-success abilities, there is a LOT of room for enemy teams to react to what lee sin is trying to do. Lee Sin doesn't build full tank, press R, and solo the ADC when he is surrounded by his teammates (and yes, that is what Olaf was doing). If Lee goes in for a ward jump, you know what he is trying to do and can try to outplay accordingly.
Lee Sin's big plays also aren't stemming from incredibly powerful moves like Elise E following through flashes and dashes. I guess in general I'm fine with what lee sin is able to do because there are a lot of variables that go into any of the plays he makes, and the team playing against Lee can try to shift those variables to their favor.
That being said, if one were to reduce the effectiveness of Lee Sin, I would argue that power should be taken out of his Q, mostly in the % missing health portion. If it started at 4% and scaled to its 8%, you would go a long way to reducing the early game dominance that Lee Sin has.
Also, I remember from my time playing him that it seems like he never runs out of energy; perhaps nerfing his energy costs in some way would help force him to be more precise in his plays or risk failure.
All in all though, I don't mind his kit or the plays that he is capable of pulling off, just how forgiving his kit is if he messes up.
I don't like the energy reduction idea too much. I played Shen pre-season 1 / season 1 and after the changes to him it basically broke his kit. If you don't hit the initial Taunt you're unable to do anything for the rest of the team fight. It's not fair for a character to be crippled like that only because he is popular at the time.
I'd rather see some of his abilities' extra power removed. Like, why does a melee assassin get an awesome spammable shield for his friends, but Shen (a full tank) can only do a pathetic shield on himself? I doesn't make sense from a design perspective.
Except he's still dominant. That's what everyone keeps telling Riot and won't listen. He is picked an outrageously large amount of the time in competitive play because he's literally EVERYTHING that is needed in 1 champion. He has a mechanic in his kit to deal with EVERY SITUATION and EVERY CHAMPION. He can 100-0 an ADC with ONE damage item mid game. He is complete anti-fun. He isn't high skill cap. Insec can be learned by anyone who has any desire to learn it.
- Last thing, and this is more about just our resources and time - we can definitely make him a better champ, but there are 122 other champions in the game and IMO some need updating more than he does. (fully stacked urgot tear).
Speaking of which (and to give you a question you can really ignore just like every other Rioter it seems), any update on that Yorick update that Xelnath supposedly gave you the notes for back in January? It's been a long time for any Riot love for the Grave Digger and he should be more of a priority on the rework list than Poopy and Zion.
Yorick is a champ that really does need work, I agree.
To answer your question, unfortunately Xelnath is working on other things so the Yorick project is on hold. I know that we will come back to it some day and the work Xelnath did gives us a good head start. But he is currently not in the pipe.

What I read from all that is "Lee Sin is a cool champion and we like him for L$C big plays. Even if he is too strong atm, we got other things to do so even if he is still dominating this jungle, you'll have to deal with it."
It is as I feared. Looks like Lee Sin will still be in every game this season.
I was more talking about a rework being lower priority. Buffs and nerfs are always things that should happen to keep the game balanced. We don't want Lee or any other champion to be the clearly best jungler. There are 123 champs in the game for a reason, the diversity is a big reason why playing LoL is interesting.
But you let that happen. When both Elise and Lee Sin were dominating (In fact only Lee sin was dominating, and Elise was the only one who could handle him) you nerfed Elise and not Lee Sin, and just in case you nerfed her once time more when it wasn't needed.
And this has happened every time Lee sin shared the "top jungle" with someone instead of being he "the only one king of the jungle".
- He's fun as hell with a high skill cap and lots of depth to his play (love this)
This frightens me. Does this mean his flashy, hyper-mobile, 'everything-you-could-want-in-a-champ' qualities are going to stay, and all we can hope for are small number tweaks? Another champion like this is Yasuo, arguably the worst designed champion in the entire game...
Yas got quite a few number tweaks, but his kit is the epitome of anti-fun. Number changes don't do that much to him in the long run since his kit is so frustrating to go against. This sounds exactly like Lee's situation. Do you think it might be better to start from scratch to make something less obnoxious? And yes this can apply to both Yas and Lee.
He is pretty unfocused, and this is more of a symptom of the older champ development style that he was created in (see irelia etc). The question of "what makes lee sin special as a champ?" isn't easy to answer
His sole defining trait is that he's blind, and absolutely nothing about his kit reflects that one bit...also sort of like Irelia where all her abilities no R have nothing to do with her rather unique weapon.
You're absolutely right, but unfortunately it looks like the Lee mains found this thread and are going against every anti-Lee comment here. Noticing a lot of the higher voted posts have less than they did a few hours ago.

I understand that some champions get pushed to the front of the attention list for being bottom of the barrel
or a problem that can't be fixed with a simple number job
. It's not that he's broken, it's not that he's weak, it's not that he's unfun to play with or against (mostly). It's just that he's been so strong for so long I let out an audible groan every time he gets picked. I'm tired of seeing him. It's gotten old. And I'm very sure I'm not alone in that sentiment.
I believe, with every fiber of my being, that if you balanced him so that you don't see him jungling every time the pros gather to do something, that the blind monk wasn't the "go to" guy, that he didn't have so much to bring to every single team composition, you'd give a lot back to the game. A lot more than you'd get with a Tristana rework. A lot more than you'd get with an Urgot fix. A lot more than you'd get with a Poppy rework. Because while fixing those champs fixes one champ, fixing Lee Sin would open the jungle to many, many more.
should be at the top of the priority list.
You have a good point, we shouldn't only focus on the bottom of the barrel champs as you say. Sometimes fixing an overly dominant pick can open up doors for a lot of other champs. I'll do some more analysis and talk to the balance team about his current state to make sure we are doing all that we should for the character. I have a feeling that he was not the top of their priority list in the most recent patch (cough warwick).

It's not that you're focusing on bottom of the barrel champs, it's the fact that anyone who becomes a competitor for Lee Sin in the jungle gets gutted (Elise) or nerfed to the point they're no longer viable in competitive pro play. Other champions have been nerfed for reasons that apply to Lee Sin also, but you guys seem EXTREMELY reluctant to touch him at all, aside from the love tap he received in early/mid S4.
Well i kind of agree with focusing on fixing those "bottom of the barrel" champs. Maybe reworking them will actually fix the Lee Sin problem?
HUGE leap here but stay with me ;)... What if reworked Poppy jungle becomes a thing, and she does really well against Lee Sin. Now Poppy is the FoTM, but what if a previously thought to be useless champ does really well against or with Poppy jungle. Now we have a few more choices other then just Lee Sin and whoever can deal with him.
Obviously Lee does need some work, he is too well-rounded even exceeding in places he really shouldnt, but reworking outdated champs opens up whole new compositions, composition where maybe there are better picks then Lee Sin or champions that shine more then Lee Sin.
Fixing an overly dominant pick can open up new spots, but so can fixing an outdated champion (plus those are more exciting lol). Besides getting all champions on a more even playing field first, will help balance those "overpowered" champs later.
I think there's a balancing point between fixing both sides of the problem. Both types of updates have huge value and I love bringing one of the more forgotten champs into the spotlight.

sniff ...Shedding manly tears...This is a beautiful post.
Why not take a page from IronStylus' book and do what he's been doing for Taric, make a pinned thread asking the community what makes Lee Sin Lee Sin, not generic MOBA martial arts guy.
Good point, let's ask the constructive question. What are the essential and most unique elements of Lee Sin?
{quoted} Good point, let's ask the constructive question. What are the essential and most unique elements of Lee Sin?
His mobility. I have never played Lee Sin, but his mobility is the highlighting factor of his playstyle and how I fight him when it comes down to it. He really only has two spells that jump, but they take up so much of his strategical thinking compared to his other abilities that the others are kinda just there to other players (I mean, what can you do against his ult but just be a target?)
From a fighting standpoint, Lee does great early due to high numbers and high mobility, and decent tankiness that can keep him in fights when damage isn't high. Late game he becomes more of a support, peeling and keeping people away from his carry. Most people know that. Most people really don't end up transitioning into that late game ideal, and end up falling off like a rock dropped into the pond. So honestly, all he needs is focus in his kit. Damage, or utility?
{quoted} Good point, let's ask the constructive question. What are the essential and most unique elements of Lee Sin?
Okay, I'll take a stab. I think that Lee Sin is defined by his crazy mobility. He's in the top 5 of most mobile champions in lol. He can engage fights in many different ways. He does a respectable amount of damage and has the ability to outplay his opponent at any time with the right timing of skills and mechanical execution. He's a unique mobile fighter who tries to out maneuver his opponent in order to achieve victory. That being said here are things that Lee Sin has, that he should NOT have.
Easiest way to nerf Lee and bring him from "100% pick/ban in every competitive match" remove his free spell vamp, no reason for that shiz and lower his bases, but improve his ratios. Force him to build damage in order to do damage.
Feels to me like it is near consensus on the fact that Lee's defining element is his mobility, and the unique plays (kicks, dragon steals etc) that he can make with it.
This is the thing to play up on Lee where things like straight up fighting power for right clicking enemies isn't what makes him cool.
Thank you everyone for all of the responses, it helps us a ton directionally when we look to make balance changes or even change his kit.
I agree with the other comments. Most of Lee's identity is wrapped up in his crazy mobility.
He's unique from other high mobility champs because (1) he is the only high mobility champion that uses energy and (2) he has two mobility spells that have vastly different requirements for using them (Q requires an enemy or neutral unit, W requires an ally or ward).
Personally, I think if you were to focus on anything to emphasize with him, it would be that mobility. I also think that it would be fine for Lee to have either decent damage or decent utility coupled with his mobility, but not both like he has now.
While I think you should emphasize Lee's mobility more, I think you also make some adjustments to it. Currently, Lee doesn't have a lot of meaningful decisions tied up with his mobility. Other high mobility champions are typically gated by a resource (e.g. Kass), by circumstances not entirely under their control (e.g. Yasuo), or require careful planning and zone control (Rek'Sai).
A lot of other high mobility champions also tend to "pay" for their mistakes when they use their mobility, either by being squishy (e.g. Ez) or having meaningful cooldowns attached to their mobility.
Lee Sin, on the other hand, is pretty tanky, has high base movement speed, has low energy costs, has low cooldowns, and has multiple mobility spells in his kit.
Personally, I don't want to see Lee's mobility butchered as much as I want to see it shift to reward good play with teammates and interaction with the enemy. I think Lee Sin should have to rely on his enemies and his allies for his mobility on the battlefield. Lee Sin should also be less forgiving when he misuses his mobility.
I picture Lee Sin to be the more offensive-oriented version of Shen. While Shen uses his mobility to protect his team (and is punished severely when he fails to do so), Lee Sin should use his mobility to fight the enemy (and be punished when he chooses not to do so). I think Lee should have very high mobility and low cooldowns in a fight, but should have drastically less mobility once he disengages from the enemy team.
I think that your ward-hop change for Lee that was (almost) implemented was on the right track. However, I think you can't just change his W and expect to solve the problem: you also need to modify the rest of his kit to be more focused on his mobility and less on either his utility or damage.
Make a new thread asking this, so all the discussion is focused and the tone can be more set.
To answer the question, though: Highly situational multi-point power. Great mobility... if he lands a skillshot or is near allies. Great utility... if a knockback or reveal are needed. Great damage... if he can get on a mark with low health/mobility. His kit reflects this strategic thinking, being clearly conditional in most ways.
In terms of fantasy and feel, though? High mobility, and Hi-KUUUU! Those are the distilled essence of Lee Sin.
His crazy, jump-all-around mobility is pretty much what defines Lee Sin. And his Dragon's Rage Roundhouse kick.
What I really liked about the rework that was popping up ages ago was the ult change: Instead of frontloading all the damage, independant of how he uses it, it halfed the initial damage, but added 50% of the removed damage for every champion the initial target collided with (same damage as live if colliding with 2 other champions). Making it so that it clearly distinguished between the purpose of damaging a target (kicking it through a team) and the purpose of just moving a target out of position (no further collision).
I know you probably aren't allowed to say "We have consistently and intentionally left Lee Sin blatantly overpowered since his release with meaningless nerfs that do nothing to address the issue that he pays nothing for what is probably the highest mobility in the game alongside a kit so overloaded it would make CertaintyT wet himself", but please do not speak to us like we are morons.
You CRUSH champs in a patch or two for taking one step out of line (or bot lane, hello every support who had a dream once) and leave people to rot in dumpsters when you don't know what to do with them (assuming this is not the intention all along, being an Eve main suuuuucks and I imagine the Olaf crowd are even sadder) but poster boy Lee Sin walks away contradicting EVERYTHING YOU SAY and you do NOTHING.
-You reworked Sejuani (good!) and got her more attention (good!) and then you roflstomped her into the ground. That was a lot of wasted effort! If you didn't want her played, you could have left her alone for those of us who liked her! The recent power shuffle on her skills feels great, except that I start every game knowing that if their jungler sonic waves into my red camp I'm removed from play for 15 minutes. By design, you cannot fight Lee Sin, in your jungle or his. No problems here!
-You have nerfed Evelynn over and over and over again, making it impossible for her to have a cohesive build. Your ASSASSIN MAGE builds AD TANK. And this is because "oh no permasteath too strong" which might be true, but it's too bad hypermobility costs nothing. How about you remove Eve's stealth and give her multiple gapclosers, escapes, and a knockback along with lifesteal, spellvamp, slows, shields, and reveals? NO THAT WOULD BE FUCKING INSANE, WOULDN'T IT.
-At one point last year you nerfed Lux. LUX. Whose only crime was still being sort of viable once the AD assassins pushed the mages out of mid and into support. You needed to buff immobile mages to compete and instead you just made sure to shut them out harder. What the hell is the reasoning here? (And don't get me started on how you hold back her kit. Illumination not illuminating is the antithesis of sense.) Stop writing articles about how Brand can support and let the mages play the game again.
-All supports. Janna, Sona, Soraka, Lulu, Taric, anyone takes one step out of bot and they get massacred. Immediately. Absolutely no regard is given to destroying supports, but Lee Sin has dominated the jungle since release and YOU DO NOTHING. "But we don't chain nerf supports!" Yeah, and Lee Sin falls off lategame. Tell me another!
You say you want strategic diversity. You are changing the jungle AGAIN, which means you are still not happy with it. The solution to both problems has been presented to you HUNDREDS if not THOUSANDS of times, and you IGNORE IT. Lee Sin. Priority #1. Stand up to the delicate LCS flowers for once and make some progress towards what you claim are your goals. ~Uiru
I see why reds tend to tread carefully in these types of threads now.
I wish you luck in trying to map out the horrifyingly difficult task of balancing League of Legends
Lee sin isn't OP, he just has everything in his kit.
doesnt having everything make him abit OP
hes got 2 gap closers/escapes a shield life steal and spell vamp self peel/ melee nuke/ play maker ult high early game damage at lvl6 to 100- 0 you
i think you missed it
look at his ult cooldown, base damage, and scaling, then tell me he isn't op
he isn't op
look at his ult damage. 200% ad scaling + 600 base.
Then look at the damage on Veigar's ult, and Darius', and Cho'gath's, Guess they all need to get nerfed too.
Having a skill that does a lot of damage does not make a champion overpowered.
You mean the guys that actually have to walk up to you in order to do it? Good call. And I'm not going to hold my breath waiting for Veigar to make an appearance on the competitive scene.
Veigar can get some massive Anti-APC steroids on his ultimate, and it is the same range as his Q, which can allow theoretically infinitely stacking AP. Combine that with a smaller (but severely delayed) nuke and a huge AOE stun (that is countered by anyone that happened to get caught in the center of it) and basically the
passive, why isn't he played in LCS games-
Oh, wait... I forgot about
...
It's okay buddy, maybe next season...
Why do people think Lee Sin is OP?
Like I don't even get it. Provided you don't put yourself in a position for him to beat you up, he can't do all that much. Personally, I think he could be a bit more balanced (he's got everything a jungler could want and very few drawbacks) but I hardly think he's OP.
Because he can outduel 99% of other Champs with the same feed? Oh maybe it's the hypermobility/tankyness and no resource cost?
Because he can outduel 99% of other Champs with the same feed?
But he's designed to do that early game. His early game is meant to be really strong, while late game relies upon utility, knowledge and mechanical skill to remain relevant and be of aid to your team.
The problem is his early game is really strong, ganking, escapes, mobility, dueling. Since its so easy to do well early game, he should really fall off late game like Katarina. But he never does. You see, falling off means you're able to do less, that other champs will be superior for your role.
But Lee Sin is just as awesome late game. He does NOT fall off. In damage yes, because you build tanky. If you build damage, he's still amazing? So why do players stop building him damage? Solution: Because as a tank he's EVEN BETTER in team fights. His ult is game changing, his mobility is still amazing as well. That's why.
Lee Sin never falls off. In fact, he's even worse. His role shifts to what is most needed at every stage of the game, and he's great at every single one.
He absolutely falls off past 20 minutes if you're a bad player.
if you are a bad player
99% of players qualify
Lee Sin probably has the highest skill ceiling. Overall he's in a good state but if you're not diamond or korean he's just okay. Kids just like to complain because they dont have the reaction times to flash or sidestep a Q
you can just grind him till you get good
Just like every other champ? Lol
