Riven is not an all in Champion

If you play Riven as an all in champion you end up one of those "Riven Mains" who go 0/5/0 to Urgot by 7 minutes.

A lot of boards keep popping up "Why can Riven use her all in E for escape?". Well, first of all it is an escape. Literally the only time this spell is used to all in is during combos that use it for bursting faster. In which case she is choosing to use this defensive spell during her W or third Q. Meaning the shield is largely or partially wasted. Any other use of her E is dodging skill shots or disengaging.

Riven's Q is her engage skill. Notice it is the one that deals damage. E is Riven's lane sustain and team fight defensive steroid, comparable to other Skirmishers:

Jax's dodge, Fiora's parry and heal, Ekko's shield and ult, Yasuo's shield and windwall, Trynd's heal and ult. All serve the purpose of giving them sustain in lane and survivability in team fights.

Skirmishers are known for one thing. Getting in, dancing around their opponents, getting out. They all have mechanics that allow them to do this with only Jax escape falling a little short. They are a form of slayer next to assassins. But instead of as much trickery and burst they get some sustain and CC.

This is how Riven plays. She goes in, punishes mistakes, pulls out. The only time a Riven ever goes all in to stay. Is late game team fights if she is either fed and is cleaning up, or so far behind she never makes it out.

All in champions are those who are tankier and cannot escape a fight. Such as Darius, Garen or Kled. Once they go in. They are there to stay. This is not Riven.

Jax's ability to escape is actually somewhat respectable, because his Q to jump to anything under the sun. His ward hopping is why I'm a terrible warder, because having that option has saved my life innumerable times. But you're right that he doesn't dance around his opponents. He goes in and ruins them with a lamppost, or if you're a real badass, a giant championship cup (IT MAKES BONKING SOUNDS!!!!!)

lol lvl 6 Riven scrub can confirm that straight up fighting actual all-in champions as Riven usually leads to painful anal rape.

Too bad 99% of people playing Riven will continue to try and all in and die when they're like level 1 and their opponent is level 18 and full build over and over again.

Sadly misperceptions about the champion's functionality has lead to a near cult like group of angry players who don't understand the champion they are playing. I am trying to fix that. C=

Honestly this is only true in certain match ups. Taking Fervor means you wanna be all-in'ing pretty often, taking CotC is the same as you wanna use it's full duration and combo your shields together. Taking Stormraiders means you do a super quick full combo and escape (might as well be called an all in, it's a fucking full combo that is doing >30% of their health). Only Tlords really accentuates the quick trades style.

Although with Fervor you'd still want/need to poke them down first. Although tbh sometimes you don't need to.

Also, Riven has two primary poke combos - the one you are talking about, with Q'ing in, then getting out with E, but also her doublecast poke combo. It does the exact same thing but is a little slower getting out (Q is slower than E), however it's faster going in. E+auto+doublecast+Q out is a fairly common poke combo which uses E to engage, and Q to dissengage. Yes it's for burst, later on, but early game/against tanks it functions as a poke combo.
