An Idea For Soraka

Soraka's whole thing is healing now. That's basically it. Does she have other tools? Yes. Do they matter as much as her healing? No. She does very little else other than an occasional slow and a silence and that's because so much of her power comes from her constant, very powerful heals. The thing about this is that these heals can feel oppressive when they are too strong and since that's what her whole kit revolves around the rest of her kit suffers. In order to add power to the rest of her kit, you'd have to remove some of her reliability from healing.

So here's my sentiment about how to deal with one of her healing problems: burst healing. Soraka can currently out-heal a lot of damage done to a champion due to the instant and constant effect of her healing. My suggestion is to remove a portion of the instant heal and convert it into a heal-over-time.

The change would make it so that say, 75 health is given instantly and then the rest of the healing effect would take place over the next few seconds. You still get the effect of some burst heals but you wouldn't simply be able to instantly out heal another champions damage with the press of a button.

You may ask what happens if I heal the target multiple times over? Well you'd get the same impact from the initial heal but the heal over time effect would simply refresh the timer.

>So lets say you heal a target for 75 health and another 100 health will be healed over 4 seconds. >You heal again 2 seconds later. >Your first heal initially healed for 75 health and another 50 health from the over time heal. >The second heal would heal for another 75 health immediately and refresh the 4 seconds on the over-time heal. This means you'd get another 100 health back over 4 seconds but you'd ultimately lose 50 health from the first over-time effect by overriding the effect with the second spell cast.

Remember, the main goal of this would be to take away some reliability and create more decision-making to her heals. After this change Soraka could receive buffs to the rest of her kit and allow for a more interesting character and a less oppressive healer.

Please give your thoughts or questions below. If you don't like it please tell me why below as well. Thank you.

heal over time would kill her. she'd have zero way to save anybody from getting insta bursted, sorry but this idea is terrible despite it being well thought out

Ult could still instantly heal and another part of her kit could get buffed like her E or Q to help out. Her heal being this powerful is what makes her feel like that's all she does or even all she should do.

Healing over time spells are boring and bad design in my opinion, and last time I checked, the devs share that sentiment.

Burst healing isn't a problem, and I fail to see how your suggestion would add any decision-making to her healing. All that your suggestion does is move her heal towards being a boring passive sustain heal, and buffing other parts of her kit go completely against her intended role as league's "premier healer" (as the devs put it).

Bonipherus2 votes

She can still be the premier healer without being just a heal-bot.

The suggestion adds decision making because to get the most out of your heals you need to wait for a longer period of time before applying another heal. The front-loaded part of the heal still exists which still makes Soraka the best at healing continuous damage on the spot.

I think you're also looking at the changes in a vacuum. These would not be the only changes that happen. They are more of a catalyst to allow the rest of her kit to receive buffs. If she receives buffs to the rest of her kit with the current iteration of her W then she'd likely become oppressive again.

You realize you basically just said "She can still be the premier healer without just being the premier healer". "Heal-bot" is a derogatory term for "healer".

I wouldn't say there's any significant or even noticeable decision-making in that. Again, it mainly just limits it as a burst heal and moves it towards a passive sustain heal, which is bad.

Bonipherus2 votes

No, that's not what I said. Heal-bot is a term for someone who does nothing but heal, which is boring. Premier healer denotes the champion who is best at healing; it is a comparative measure.

Burst healing is a problem because when Grievous wounds was changed, it left burst healing unable to be countered.

I think her E is her best skill honestly, but it definitely takes some practice to use effectively.

Bonipherus2 votes

Her E is great. It has so much potential impact and I love it in her kit. I just wish there was... something! something more! An effect to decrease the cooldown of it and let me use it twice in a fight? With her current kit you just couldn't add something like that without making her disgusting.

Okay, so if Riot doesn't do this, it would be shameful. This is such a good idea. It isn't even a nerf.

Zerolera4 votes

It's a huge nerf actually to her and it would revert her back to her original healing status instead of the current battle healer that she is.

Bonipherus2 votes

The change is meant to take some power away from heal-spam in order to give power to her elsewhere. I didn't present any other buff ideas in this post as a compromise for the change because I'm not sure as to what those changes should be. But this idea is, again, to allow for buffs in other areas of her kit to turn her away from being just a healer and more of a "battle healer".

Zerolera4 votes

There would be so many better battle healers than her if that change was made. She is supposed to be the best healer however her old set up used to favor her just keeping her adc at full health constantly and healing any poke without a fight ever actually breaking out. The current set actually makes her fun to play against and really punishes her if you turn your attention to her early vs her adc in a fight.

Bonipherus2 votes

I really disagree that her kit is fun to play against and I believe a large majority of the community disagrees with that sentiment as well. I do like that she does create a unique paradigm when playing against her of "do I need to focus the adc or do I have to focus the healer?". This is an interesting interaction she brings to the table, yes, but I don't consider her current iteration fun to play against.

Again... this change isn't meant to remove her heals or to her play pattern into something else. It is to allow addition to her kit that wouldn't be possible with her current heals.

Battle healer? Uh...I've played Soraka and trust me, its not hard. You just press W when your ADC loses a good bit of HP and when you're low you hit your Q

Partholonian2 votes

If it's not hard to hit your Q when you're already low without being engaged on and blown up, you are either playing against bad players or bots or your opponents are CC'd. And not by you, because Soraka has very poor CC (especially for a support which usually bring quite a bit).

Problem I have with this is that it is very unsatisfying as a Soraka player to heal for a small initial amount but still lose 10% health on the spot. Also, as a teammate it would be unclear exactly how much health they would be getting back in the end. You could have a DOT as the heal goes on for Soraka but that makes clarity problems worse because you aren't sure how much health you are losing, especially when casting a lot of them or taking damage.

They need to introduce some mechanic that makes Soraka less optimal with HP regen, and make it so that dealing damage to self puts you in combat. How to do that I am not exactly sure yet.

Bonipherus1 votes

I think if the heal is strong enough then the immediate 10% health loss could still feel satisfying but if not then what if Soraka lost the 10% health just over the cooldown period instead of all at once. You'd retain the clarity of how much health you lose this way right? Would you think that would relieve at least this problem?

Water Breathing1 votes

You imply in your post that the duration of the heal is longer than the CD, so that won't work. You'll still overlap on health cost if you choose to heal off CD and not wait for the duration to complete.

The problem with Soraka is Ancient Coin, Potions, and the Warmog's passive. Coin and HP potions means she has a safe lane phase and doesn't need to go in range to Q. If she is going the 3000HP route and you can't end the game in time, then you will have a problem.

Health regen from outside sources need to be disabled on her, but should be done to benefit a different stat. Converting 70% of her health regen to mana regen at a lower conversion rate might be one way to consider it while making damage to yourself disable Warmog's.

Bonipherus2 votes

I'm fine with taking away the warmog's build path on her. I truly am. But let's stick to the discussion about the heal for the moment.

The point of the heal over time having a longer span than the cooldown is to make burst healing less optimal.

If she was all over time heal then it would be completely wasteful to not perfectly time the heal duration and that's not fun for anybody. Having the mixture creates more of a choice of when to heal rather than mash W and heal as much as possible because damage is coming.

Water Breathing2 votes

I know you want the duration to be longer than the CD, but with an upfront health cost, it isn't going to feel good for Soraka. If you want a DOT, it's going to be confusing if the duration is longer than the CD. If the CD and duration are the same or the CD is longer, you still have the problem of allies not knowing when the heal ends or how much health they are getting.

Bonipherus1 votes

Are you saying that the upfront health cost wont feel good for Soraka as a champion or for the player? If you're saying it's for the player then I think that comes down to the amount of HP used in relation to the power of the heal. As for the clarity part you could add an indicator similar to TahmKench's grey health.

Water Breathing2 votes

Let's say that W heals for 100 total, half instantly and half over 3 seconds. If I press W, that means 50 HP instantly in exchange for 10% of my max health, which doesn't feel worth it / impactful for the person playing Soraka because the health over time is not very noticeable.

If you want the impact to be there, you need to increase the upfront, but if you increase the upfront heal then the heal over time needs to be lowered to the point where it is either unnoticeable or pointless.

Grey health won't be effective because the amount of grey health is always going to be constantly changing on Soraka. TK has a time period where his Grey health won't change, so you can clearly see how much shield you will have if you press E. Assuming the CD on the heal is short, you'll have a lot of small patches of grey health moving very quickly over the course of 1-2 secs. which doesn't convey any information at all.

Bonipherus1 votes

I think it doesn't sound worth it because you just state it as losing 10% of your max health without stating what those numbers would be while also using very low numbers to equate the heal. A level 1 heal is a flat 120 health and at level 1 that would equate to 53 health taken from Soraka. That sounds more worth it to me.

About the grey health thing though. I think you're making that seem overly complicated as well.

  1. Soraka uses her W
  2. You get an initial heal instantly granting green health while simultaneously gaining a grey health bar.
  3. The grey health bar starts to convert into green health.
  4. Soraka casts W again
  5. You gain some more green health and the grey health meter readjusts to fit the heal over time amount.

It's like the green health spills over into the grey area. There are no multiple grey health bars. Just one.

Edited for clarity

Soraka needs to be gated by mana, not health. Part of the reason she's a heal bot is because of that stupid minigame. If she isn't stupid and doesn't waste mana, you'll never be able to bully her out of lane.

Have the heal take away flat HP, and jack up her mana costs like they did with Brand. Increase the refresh rate on her silence to compensate, and Soraka can start to be balanced.

soraka is gated by mana right now.. not by health.
