My Reason For Going AP Lux Support (No Flame)

atorelle··1 votes·883 views

I know I'll probably get downvoted for this, but I just want to put my word out there for those who are willing to listen. (I've only been playing for about a year, so there are obviously some things that I might not know about, which I would love to learn about, so just regard that) [sg-ahri-2] First of all, as a lux support I would like to say this to the adcs out there who have had a bad experience with lux supports: I apologize on behalf of them (unless you were being toxic and blaming them). [sg-soraka]

Now, starting with why we build AP lux support.

There's a reason why lux players play Lux , and I would assume that most of them play it to have fun, because they enjoy the champion, disregarding their skill level on that particular champion. I will admit, Lux support isn't the best support to pick in a team comp, but that's not our topic, just putting that out there in case anybody goes ASJKDHFJKA LUX IS TERRIBLE SUPPORT PROBLEM SOLVED in the replies. Like, yes, it's not the best, but no, it isn't not viable. A good lux can help and impact a teamfight greatly.

Lux doesn't have much utility when you really think about it. Q is a root, but first of all, the CDR is really long and it punishes you hard if you miss it. And also the hitbox is hella clunky, and yes, sometimes the Qs shouldn't have hit, but people have a tendency to complain about when they get hit, and instead ignore the times when it should've hit and it didn't. (Also the hitbox isn't that big, stand behind minions and you should be good) The crowd control roots you, but it's not that bad considering there are champions with CC like Ryze point and click Root and Veigar E. This is pretty much her only peel.

Her W is a shield, but considering the time it takes to returns, it doesn't negate a whole lot of damage when it's first thrown out, and when it comes back its not a particularly good one (Morgana's E I'm looking right at you). Also the cooldown is relatively long compared to other support shields.

Her E can slow, but this is hardly ever a type of peel like some ADCs describe it to be. Yes, the CC is there, but it's nothing when an assassin gets in your face and mobility, invisibility is a thing (Rengar mains please leave us alone). You can force the argument that it is peel, I guess, but it's not as impactful as people say it is. Like seriously. Also CDR. Compared to something like Janna, Lux's peel is nonexistent. Also, once we burn our Flash, and the jungle ganks, we're dead meat. summoner 4

Her R, finally. Many people complain about us lux supports ulting to KS. In some cases, if the lux has intentionally done it, they are in the wrong. But if it is in situations where you can't get the kill, or you flashed to get it but your support wasn't aware, we did it because more gold is better, nevertheless of who got the kill, and also our ult procs our passive, so sorry if we get the kill sometimes, we weren't trying to. I could say the same for other supports because our ADCs freak out about us getting one kill that they couldn't get, so yeah.

[sg-lulu]

(Before reading the below, this is just MY experience in games, it probably will be different for you) After getting that out of the way, in conclusion: Lux's utility isn't the best. This is why I decided building AP was the best path, and this is pretty arguable depending on your thoughts: I make up for the lack of utility with my damage. Also MR pretty much is a huge cockblock to Lux, so imagine if she didn't have AP she wouldn't be doing anything at all. Of course, my thought process and I'm positive other lux supports' think that: she's different from generic supports, the best way is to build her AP because she was built an AP mage, and since my abilities are targeting at doing damage, I'll try my best to help my team in that way. Support items don't really help Lux that much, since her kit isn't support-oriented. If Lux is good at doing damage in a teamfight, and she has the gold to do it, I think most of us would go for it, and that's just common sense. And also in some cases, we go AP because our ADC isn't doing that well and we want to help the team by being able to dish out damage better than you can. As much as we want you to get the kill, we don't want to put our team's victory/loss on the line just to make your KDA look better, but we promise it's not of ill intent. [sg-ahri-1]

AP Lux carries a lot of more kill pressure on the team rather than going normal support Lux, and if you compare a Lux going support items and a support like Soraka/Lulu/Nami going support items item 3504 item 3174 item 3222 item 3107 item 3092 item 3222 , obviously the soraka/Lulu/Nami would be way more impactful, because support items synergize well with them. On the other hand, Lux doesn't, so instead of providing utility that is not provided as much in her kit, we choose to make up for it as damage. I've seen that in games, I normally do the most damage if we end at about the 30-minute mark, of course I'm not saying that about all games and I'm not trying to brag either so don't go through my match history and go "U sucked this game" "You didn't do most damage what are you talking about". [slayer-jinx-catface]

And compared to Brand support (Stop playing him supp it's a nightmare), Lux needs items to do well. If Lux is behind on gold and items, she sucks really bad. She's more of an AP burst carry mage support if you play her well, and looking at how bull some supports are right now, Lux can be really underwhelming compared to those. Also, she's squishy. This can be an invalid argument for some, but I feel like if I'm just going to be burst down either way, I'd much rather be doing at least some damage before I get burst down than not doing any damage and dying.

I'm just saying we aren't not completely to blame for some outcomes, but I think some hate on Lux going AP Support is undeserved and not justified, so I decided to put my thought out there. I probably missed some things in my post, so please ask or remind me anything you have in particular about Lux support and why you think my arguments are invalid or you have something to add to my point, please do so! I'm interested in hearing constructive criticism from those who want to listen. Lux [sg-lux]

You push the lane for no reason trying to harass, leaving your lane open for a gank. You're squishy and your shield is literally a skillshot which can easily miss.

I love playing jungle against mages, you people never realize it's your fault you keep getting ganked

In your case, the Lux support isn't played correctly. Your E doesn't do that much early, and you're incredibly mana hungry so you can't keep doing that. I don't get why the "You're squishy" comment makes going AP Lux support bad since that's not what this thread is about, but I think your comment is directed more towards "Why Lux Support is Not Good". Only people who don't know what they're doing push the lane that hard isn't entirely the Lux's fault, and I'm positive more supports with higher damage can push the lane further, although it's not what they're supposed to be doing.

If any ADC or support pushes and overextends and gets ganked, you could just say the same for everyone. Just don't think that should be pinned entirely on why Lux AP Support is terrible, and you neglected the entire rest of my thread talking about why we build it, but oh well. [sg-lux-2]

I'm really horrified each time I position mid or jungle to see mage supports not warding the enemy jungle entrance, or mid-bot river section. They just ward bushes. And it is like a 2 second reaction time to discover a gank. It is IMPOSSIBLE for a immobile mage to avoid a junglers gank from that distance. That reaction duration is designed for peelers to react. Not mages.

Imagine if the enemy is using Hecarim or Kayn? Guess what happens lol. This is why it is crucial to learn "where" to ward as support before even damn queing. Support is pretty much being your teams surveillance officer. I find most mage supports don't even bother about that.

I've played a bit of Lux Support in the past, you'd be surprised how much shielding she can give with her [W: Prismatic Barrier]. Also, since Lux has the ability to give her Allies a shield, she can make use of both Summon: Aery and Ardent Censor to boost the Shielding amount & give her ADC more attack speed (Assuming it's not someone like Jhin or Miss Fortune, I'd rather have Redemption or Mikaels in that case).

She can be played like a 2nd APC, that much is true. However she does indeed have utility in her kit & can be a pretty good enchanter if you're confident with her. Honestly, the Playstyle for Support Lux is all up to preference.

Runes I take are:

Summon Aery/Manaflow Band/Transcendence/???

####Font of life/Revitalize (The last rune in the Sorcery Tree is entirely up to you. Waterwalking can be useful for roaming & Gathering Storm gives more AP)

Build path:

  • Your Core Items are going to be item 3098 item 3117
  • Any item that builds from item 3114 would be a solid buy after this. Buy item 3504 if your ADC values Attack Speed & Crit. Buy item 3107 if they aren't focusing on Crit or Attack Speed (ADC's like Miss Fortune, who build Lethality/Armor Pen early on). Buy item 3222 if you're dealing with CC or if you want that 20% Shield & Healing Power.
  • Your final items are going to be entirely situational. You can build any of the following items, depending on what you need: item 3116 item 3905 item 3165 item 3174 item 3190 item 3157 item 3135 item 3102 item 2065

Yes, and this is what I consider "supporting as Lux" that no other champion can do in this game. The teamwide shield is amped heavily with ardent and Aery. Thats OP. The contestant who can do this is Karma, but on the other hand she has a extremely hard to use CC. Twin shadows and mobis with ult range IS a very strong decision for your team to follow up. And you will still be doing heavy damage because of the ratios.

I've seen several Lux support buy this build path and it is very good. Full Ap lux cannot do this.

As long as you have Watchers Eye + Censer, and preferrably redemption/Athenes, I'm okay with a Lux support and it's completely viable. But then I'm also a proponent of Orianna support.

Lux Q and Ori R do not scale with stats or items in any way. Press 1 button to win a team fight and shield your carry while youre at it. If Zyra is a craiggin' Support then I don't see why Ori or Lux cant be.

As for the "your shield can miss!!!!!" That's not the Lux's fault though. Stand in the line, it even follows her as it comes back to her. It is entirely YOUR decision to take that bubble or not. Not the Lux. And it's a massive shield, especially after she's built Censer and with the right (resolve) runes.

That is because having a Zyra on the enemy team makes it extremely difficult for a assassin and diver to jump in. Zyra is a disruptor mage. A type of mage that counterpunches you in the face when you engage. Her peel, is stronger than Lux.

I'll say this again, I hope for the last time: This isn't a thread on "my reason for going lux support". It's "my reason for going Ap lux support". It's oriented on why I build AP Lux support, and not why I play support lux.

Also just to clarify, if somebody thinks this might contradict my first post as not taking Doran's Ring on supports, no, don't take Doran's Ring on any support, even if you plan to go AP. Spellthief's Edge is a good item, and you aren't lacking as much gold as you would be compared to if you took Doran's Ring. Obviously, if you're not taking all the kills and getting gold from it. The thing is. Aside from having a shield and larger ratios and burst on ult. Sadly there is nothing a Lux support can do superior compared to a Velkoz support.

His main harass can be trickshotted in a billion angles which can be unpredictable. Slow is 70%. 30% higher than lux. And it does not interfere with lane control and pushing. It is also used as a "baiting tool" to move enemies into a WER. Something Lux cannot do, due to all her skills being a line.

His knockup, has a stun attached to it. Enemies cannot even QSS out of it, and cannot retaliate. They are also knocked back. So kiting will be easier. On the other hand, Lux is a snare and a straight skillshot that can be intercepted or blocked by even minions. Velkoz's main hard cc is more forgiving with better results. (I don't get why Lux's CC is not a stun. It is harder to land than Vel's. Seriously.)

And for damage, well. Ask that Nasus who got blown the hell out when Velkoz applied 100% true damage with his ult even if he had visage.

These however, changes drastically when she has CS income when placed mid. because of her ratios.

I think you're kinda missing the point here. This isn't a thread about "Why Lux is FAR SUPERIOR than Vel'Koz" support. There are many things that a support can do better than Lux and I have obviously said that in my thread multiple times. Are you trying to promote Vel'Koz as an alternative to Lux? If so, maybe you can bring that to another thread. This isn't a thread about how Lux isn't superior compared to other mage supports or just supports in general or how good Vel'Koz support is, and my discussion is more focused on about why I choose to go Lux AP Support.

Thank you for adding your knowledge on Vel though, maybe I'll try him out. [slayer-jinx-wink]

The sole reason why Lux is not considered a support, is purely because there are better alternatives. If you are going to pick Lux support. Always consider your ADC thinking, "why?".

This is the topic that is going on for years about Lux support. There seems to be no large key strength to it other than "damage". Either the shield needs to be bigger, or her E/passive needs to get some more properties.

And also please read my thread again, I clearly stated there are better alternatives than Lux when playing support, in case to avoid replies like yours, but we can argue about how other supports are better than Vel'Koz, but let's not get into that. And also, your last point really isn't directed against Lux, but moreso it's the ADC's thought process, as I could've picked anything that he didn't like, and also if I had to consider my ADC's thoughts even in Champion Select, I don't think anybody should be pressured to play a different champion from what they enjoy for somebody else. Just do it well for the sake of others and be nice.

And that is the sole reason why people dislike that Lux support pick. You simply "don't care". I always think about my ADC's choices when I que, and think what is optimal to win and the direction. Also to make my partners job easy. People make choices when playing games, especially when this game is originally a "strategical simulator".

One of the major reasons, people love playing cannon mages bot. Is that it is "irresponsible". Typically inexperienced ones position behind your ADC and shoot regardless while other supports position horizontally. They can "only" do that. One way, nothing less. This is why it is typical to see a mage support have better scores than the ADC. It is very easy to fight solo as a mage support. But very hard and risky to "duo".

And to put it the other way around, nobody is "pressuring" you. But on the other hand, you just locked in Lux support. Do you think the ADC has a "choice"?

atorelle1 votes

Whoa there bud. You just assumed a hell lot of things about me. 'And that is the sole reason why people dislike that Lux support pick. You simply "don't care".' You could honestly say that for any other support pick like I said. It just depends on your ADC. You just substitute Lux into the equation because Lux support is "not viable", and it's a popular opinion that Lux should not be played bot lane. It'd be outrageous for you to assume that support players who play Lux support "don't care".

"I always think about my ADC's choices when I que, and think what is optimal to win and the direction. Also to make my partners job easy." Just a question, this is your way of playing. It's great that you're adjusting to your ADC, but what if you pick before them? What if your playstyle is different from theirs? What if you can't go that way? You can't assume every game will go the way you plan it to be. And just because you want to play this game for others to make their experience enjoyable, that's not something that everybody should and be obliged to. I think that people should play this game to have fun for themselves in a manner that doesn't go to being toxic, and not for other people. And just because you think this is the way that is "optimal" and winnable, doesn't mean you're right, and also doesn't mean others can read your mind nor agree. "People make choices when playing games, especially when this game is originally a "strategical simulator"." Yes, and you make your own choices, and others make theirs. Just because you think this is right, doesn't mean it is.

"One of the major reasons, people love playing cannon mages bot. But very hard and risky to "duo"." Then again, this is what you feel of how games will go. Can games go this way? Certainly. Can games go the other way? Certainly. What you said is highly dependant on who the support is, and how good they are. Are you simply saying "All mage supports are have better scores than ADC" therefore they're terrible and shouldn't be played duo? I'd disagree with that. It's your choice to decide how games go. It's my choice to help my ADC in every way I can, and I also play ADC, and even if my support picks something I don't prefer, I would try to at least try doing it, and that is my choice.

"But on the other hand, you just locked in Lux support. Do you think the ADC has a "choice"?" Of course they would. It just depends on whether they want to try and make it work. We can lose lane, or win lane. It all says too much about your mindset. If my ADC doesn't like Lux support, and immediately recoils from trying to have a good game and automatically thinking of how terrible it is. It's all personal preference. Your argument could be said for any support, it all comes down to the ADC's personal preference. And also, regarding the ADC thing, us supports we want to make the game enjoyable for others and for us, and there are situations where people counterpick us or the champion's just stronger. But just because we want to make the game enjoyable for our ADC, in no means am I saying that I'll have to completely adjust my champions to fit them. Every person is different, and since this is a strategy game, we'll figure out a strategy which can work. There are support picks that are better than Lux, yes, but if you just play this game to better each other in terms of picks, it's not really that dependent on the champion, moreso the player. Kind of like if you compare LL Stylish and a player on Silver/Bronze on Zed.

And also, I didn't see "This is the topic that is going on for years about Lux support. There seems to be no large key strength to it other than "damage". Either the shield needs to be bigger, or her E/passive needs to get some more properties." <- this part of your reply somehow, so I'll just add my take on it:

First of all, there seems to be no large key strength to it other than "damage". <- Utility? Read the kit? Maybe my thread? If it's helping your team win, I don't see why it's a bad thing? If the lux is good enough, she can support well, but I'm just saying her kit just makes it harder for her to do that, but I respect your opinion.

Either the shield needs to be bigger, or her E/passive needs to get some more properties. <- Don't blame the champion for that lol, ask Risotto games. I wouldn't mind if she got some more properties too but people would probably get mad and start talking about how broken Lux would be.
