Clarify Essence Reaver Please

I know everyone pretty much thinks it's really useless by the time you get it but I'd like to at least understand it better.

  1. Is the mana return based on damage dealt before resistances or does armor penetration improve it?
  2. Would this scale with BoRK's physical on-hit auto-attack passive?

Thanks a lot!

  1. Based on physical damage dealt so after resistances I believe. Armour penetration increases physical damage so it would improve the mana return.

  2. Yes that deals physical damage on-hit so I believe it would take that into account to calculate mana return.

For #1, it seems that Riot would specifically state if it was pre-resistances (like on WoTA), so I'm pretty convinced this is true.

On #2, it would make sense for sure but who knows how Riot programmed it (maybe some glitch in the order of the on-hit application etc.). I'd really like to know with certainty if someone has tested that it works with BoRK's passive.

  1. It's based on damage dealt in general, so after resistances, just like lifesteal.
  2. Yes, since the on-hit passive benefits from lifesteal, so does similar on-hit effects, including the Essence Reave.

It's not as bad as people make it out to be. Never going OOM on top of 10% CDR is a big deal.

That sounds reasonable but I'm having a hard time finding a place for it. If you get it early, you might as well have gotten Tear on champions like Ezreal and you don't really need both. If you get it later when it returns more mana due to your higher damage output, your natural mana scaling tends to have reduced the need for it and usually you'd want stuff like LW, BoRK or BT instead. Moreover, you can't really fit all of those together or you will lack scaling from crit. etc.

No, the two don't play well together. You can use them, but you won't get as much mana back because the on-hit part of bork isn't a part of your attack damage.

Ok sure it's not a lot, but are you saying that it doesn't return more mana from using it? Basically, are you suggesting that if I had 25 AD instead of BoRK, it would be the same mana return per auto?

Let me clarify, the unique passive of BORK isn't counted as part of your auto attack in terms of getting mana. While the passive applies life steal, I haven't heard anything to say it applies ER's mana recovery.

Have you tested it or are you just assuming this is the case? ER is supposed to restore mana on AAs and BoRK is an on-hit for AAs. I also thought that Sheen's damage was factored in for Ezreal's Q when using ER so I don't see why BoRK's passive wouldn't.

Bork was buffed so that the onhit applies life steal, it is reasonable to assume it applies mana vamp as well.

Yeah, it is my suspicion too but I want a definitive answer not assumptions. I thought I had one but now I'm not sure.
