Why is malphite, a tank, better played as an AP assasin?

Magnesium14··5 votes·4,423 views

What happened to a game, malphite is a T - A - N - K. Not an AP assassin with mad AOE and burst that can ult into a team of 5, click one e and maybe a Q for a free penta. Malphite tank is unplayable as it is so weak, meanwhile AP mal is unstoppable. Just make his kit another generic assassin kit if your not going to fix him riot.

It's what happens when building tank items is so inefficient that it's like throwing away half your gold.

I was playing poppy today on an alt. acct. I got killed by a kaisa who hit 1 W from far away, then used her R to get on me, from their she absorbed me E, Q , and AA with her ult shield, and then bursted me so hard I don't know what happened, she then proceeded to kite our J4 (who didn't have E up) for 3 secs before he died, then killing the turret in like 5 seconds.

Because tank items are garbage this season. You either build damage, or you built like a wet noodle. Hmm...tough decision.

beause even 600 armor isnt gonna save u from the damage creep

Underrated comment. I still don't understand why any crit bulding adc should kill a full armor tank that easily. Should be armor pen the counter to a tank?

Ragnaveil1 votes

Yes, it should. Problem is ADCs bitch it was a worthless statline, so it got reworked (everything % pen wise except Yas R) to now equate all armor and mr, base and bonus. "Rushing Void is pointless, they only have 50 MR!" is a typical ignorant mage statement I hear time and time again. Its not a waste when you already have by that time, Oblivion Orb and Sorc shoes. Getting Void early just gives your damage supreme reign for the remainder of the match, since you'll be ignoring all defense. Now, if Riot did the correct thing, and made it so % pen equated half of your base and half of your bonus, it wouldn't screw tanks super hard, but at the same time give damage a way to punch through late game tanks (the part of tanks that need the most buffs, with early getting a remedy so they dont get hard dick punished). The only tanks that are doing fine are ones that can mitigate damage pretty easily with Aftershock abuse syncing well with their kit (Nunu,Sej).

I was allways for 2 wayts to build. Crit to rip through squishy targets and armor pen against tanks so you had to decide which you wanna go. But I guess thats to much for adc players as they are, in my opinion, one of the most whiny bitches in the game. And obviously it would be to much work for riot.

Ragnaveil1 votes

The thing is, most ADCs are crit reliant. its like how assassins are reliant on Leth, and AP burst mages with Mpen. Also ADCs were made to be tank counters (Riot themselves said that), so forcing them to split crit and pen is rough. Now if they reworked Crit to be a auto damage modifier (aka 10% crit adds 10% damage to your autos, etc etc (numbers are rough and not final)), it would be less punishing for people having to deal with it and would prevent crit from breaking on changes to item costs or meta shifts.

I’m a 400k point malphite player and I can tell you for a fact that tank malphite is better then ap malphite. You still put out good damage but you are tanky as hell while doing it.

This, Ap malph is an annoying gimmick with his 1 combo on squishies but in a teamfight he will explode unless his ult hit the fed carries, and if you play smart and keep some separation he will generally just trade 1 for 1.

Tank malph basically invalidates any attack speed based champs b/c of the AS reduction on his E and is super hard to kill unless the enemy team has multiple magic damage sources.

Not really with his AOE and his stuff he deals large amounts of damage. You can't kill AP mal if he kills you first which he will.

Tr4shB4NSYST3M1 votes

But in a TEAMFIGHT he will only kill YOUR ENTIRE TEAM if you bunch up in his ult range, and at that point you arguably deserve to lose for misplaying and would lose to any mage w/ strong aoe like Orianna Cassiopeia orBrand

Ragnaveil1 votes

I believe the correct statement is, "Use to invalidate any attack speed based champs". Champs like Jax and Trynd can easily punch through him with ease. Jax's AS on passive got buffed, add Spear's AS on it, and Tri's AS stat, he can easily brave that AS slow. Trynd on the other hand just needs Lethal and his current build.

All part of the damage creep avalanche.

the AP malphite phenomenon is probably because everyone want's to play assassins but cba with sitting down and learning an actual assassin.

Basically everyone is saying is right and also one more thing, it's the trend of the month. Remember last month it was the mid/top Tristana. Next is Ekko jungle.

How do you know what the "trend of the month" is, I kinda need to climb, and using balanced champs isn't making the cut.

Read patch notes and win rates. Also watch few different high level streamers to see what they say while the new trend is going on.

Riot needs tp nerf the crap out of his Ult AP scaling.

Because Riot failed to understand (or they understood and chose to embrace the idea) - Champs can be simply and easily divided into 2 camps in SoloQ. when u strip down the game into its most basic, ignoring complex champ synergies only pros can pull off =

  1. Teamfighters good burst wombo-comboer or abilities that can change outcome of fights.
  2. Good Splitpushers (Macro-disruptors) - They have good access to different points of the map. Disrupts the macro or pace of game.
  3. Some champs are a combination of 1 and 2

Suddenly it becomes clear that Maphite falls into 1.

I tried AP Malphite a couple of times. It's just some cheesy shit that only works vs noobs. It's only good if you are sure you're up against a bunch of apes. I don't recommend it for climbing outside of Bronze 4.

In my experience 99% of the people can't do anything with his combo. His ult is just too fast to dodge it. After that he either oneshots you, or dies, or both. I think, that AP Malphite is great as long as your team got another tank. Someone who engage, and takes the hard times. You act more like an assassin. Except, that if enemy is stacked up, then you kill them all in a single combo. It also has superior synergy with Yasuo, and other knockup champions.

As Soraka it takes one hell of a reflex timing to put silence aura under myself, if he loves me. If not, then ult+W can save whoever he catch. But Soraka ult has a much larger CD, than Malphite ult.

AP Malphite is a piss poor substitute for an assassin. Assassins are hyper mobile which Malphite is not. He is not chasing down his target they way a Khazix, a Rengar or a Talon could. All he could do is hope the enemy team has idiots that always bunch up for him to just stand there and ult.

When you play that against a good team, they figure out pretty quickly that sacrificing their least useful member is the way to counter that cheesy shit. He would either have to take the easy kill or get nothing because a good team is not going to bunch up for him to get good game changing ults. What is more likely to happen is that his team will get fed up and try to greed get killed while he just stands there unable to do anything because they aren't mispositioning for him to get good clean ults off.

I had the pleasure of playing with such a team against a super fed AP Malphite who got managed to get a lot of successful ults off during the lane phase. He was the jungler. After lane phase ended, he caused a lot of problems for us after a point everyone pretty much figured out how to play around his bullshit. Our weakest member would bait out and eat his ults, kill him quickly and then deal with his team. Despite having 20 something kills, we won that game soundly.

This is gona shock you, but soloq is not about good team coordination. His ult has quite a large range, and once again you forget, that this is a team game. As i told before. He is not the first guy in. Once the battle starts it's much harder to pay attention. If your team gets hit by another CC, then you aren't going outrun him, and he can ult on whoever he wants. Not need to beat half of the team. 1 player is enough for the draw case. Or even win, if that one player is the only fed person.

By the way Rengar is exactly the same. He has no escape either. Once he goes in. There is no way out. Unless you fight in jungle, and he can engage without ult. But on lane he can't engage without ult.

Also he is not exactly immobile either. His Q steals movement speed. Using on a fast moving champ let him move quite damn fast. And even if there is no such champ. Zhonya can still delay his doom for the rest of the team to catch up. Or a good support can keep him alive. He is not good for a lone 1v5, then walk out style like Zed, but the charge in for the kill method works perfectly. Also the rest of his kit is low CD. Given someone who can keep him alive a bit he can deal plenty of damage in the teamfight. Much like a glass cannon.

Also in soloQ people often panic. If they see losing their ADC to a Malphite oneshot, then they often won't start the 5v4 fight. Even though Malph is full of CD, and easy to kill. The most common reaction is a retreat.

The Kombinator1 votes

Depends on enemy. If they are AP mostly, then it's the only way. MR gives no damage to malph, and all you become is dead meat. Sure you got a bit CC, but unless they are stupid they will leave you to last. Since they can't stop your ult anyway, and teamfight ends long before you can do it again.

If enemy is AD, then armor malphite is strong. He got the near oneshot combo, and with lots of survivability. Unless they got a tank killer like Vayne, or Yi it can do wonders.

Against mixed team it depends on your team. Going hybrid will leave you weak in every way. Not much damage, and die slightly slower. Going armor will do good damage, but die fast. And going AP will do insane damage, and die fast still. If your team got any other tank then go AP, if not then go pure tank since your team still need an engager.

I don't think it's more efficient yet but people did figure out how little counterplay at low elos are when a 10/2 so malph is speeding towards you the speed of a bullet train with 3 Bugattis as wheels

Because it is so damn strong compared to building full tank and just live max 1 second longer. It is also quite good against most meta junglers which are all squishy. You can easily one shot any fed kha.
