Resistances: What is the purpose?

If you build full armor against a full AD team, you still die in 3 seconds. Full Magic Resist against a mostly Magic damage team, and you still die in 3 seconds. What's the point? Why not just go full damage and kill them before they kill you? That's how this game is. Whoever bursts harder wins.

Because resistances gives % damage reduction, while AP/AD gives flat damage increase (like HP, which you can think of as giving you flat damage reduction). The more damage they deal, the more damage is negated by resistance. It's very strong actually, it's like a kind of HP that scales with you opponents AP/AD.
