I can see why people play ranked like normals just to have a decently matched game now

2 Bronze, 1 silver 5, me, and a level 21 summoner vs 3 plat, 1 diamond, and 1 smurf

560 mmr difference between teams

And before you say "well matchmaking matches you up with less than optimal matches if you wait a long time" this game queued up in literally 20 seconds.

This account is 5 years old, I have almost 5k games played in normal, so my mmr is pretty close to my ranked MMR and I usually play with plat-low diamond in teambuilder/normal

This isn't the first time this has happened either... it happens quite frequently. Why riot?

You think that's bad? Look at mine. I literally have no fun playing games like these because we roflstomped them and they ff20.

Ironically I have been in this same situation at the other end yesterday... I agree they aren't fun at all

Probably you will have to wait for like 20 minutes just to find a game, if you wanted balanced matchmaking (other Diamond players)

Is this Team Builder? That shit has the worst match making ever.

I agree, teambuilder is usually pretty mismatch but they say it's due to queue times.

This is normal draft pick and like I said in the post queue popped in like 15-20 seconds lol.

I think that's the problem, iirc queue times for normal draft pick are super long right? It probably does some BS thing to shorten your time and match you up with a lot of different people in different elos.

Nope, my queue time on average for draft pick is about 1-2 minutes

I once saw a team of Master/Challenger players in normals against a team where the highest level was 17. The game literally ended in like 13 minutes. Im gold but get matched with like S5 and under so I play well and get yelled at or play poorly bc I'm tired or bored and get harassed. I wish your ranked MMR was used for matchmaking you in normals (but of course the outcome of the normals games wouldn't effect the MMR).

Vistha Kai2 votes

It's not because of queue times.

It's because queues don't share MMR.

You can hypothetically never play normal 5v5 and only spam 5v5 ranked until Challenger. Your normal 5v5 MMR is still at 0.

I think they should add a switch where ranked MMR should override normal MMR if the former is higher.

It is because of queue times that you get matched into a mismatch game, if the queue takes too long the algorithm gives you a less favorable match so you don't wait forever. Riot has even stated this is how the algorithm works themselves; this is not an anecdotal thing, its how the game works.

Though as I said, this match popped in 15-20 seconds so there's no reason for this to happen ever, and it happens alot. My normal MMR is about the same as my ranked MMR, i have played thousands of games in normals and it has evened out.

So my question to riot was if this is how they stated the algorithm works, why these games pop up in the first place.

And you base your "My normal and ranked MMRs are the same" on what? Third party side which has no actualy access to the MMR?

Please.

Regardless of whether you think OP.GG's mmr estimation is accurate (because it is) if both my normal MMR shown in the OP.GG client and my ranked MMR shown in the OP.GG client are the same, you could reasonably argue that means they are the same.

You know? I honestly don't have a problem with this. At least what this does is it creates the opportunity to fight against super challenging opponents, thus increasing your own skill level. Anyone else? Seriously I'm totally fine if I've been against plats before, even if the game was a surrender at 20 and we got destroyed.

Zenfold1 votes

some people play normals/teambuilder for fun, its hard to have fun when you get systematically destroyed over and over by people leagues ahead of you in mechanical and tactical skills, it also gets old fast when over half of your teambuilder games you get put on the short end of the stick as a team of bronze/silver vs 3 diamonds and 2 unranked guys.

Sassmast3r1 votes

Well, I can definitely see your point :) but in my situation I play with friends on Skype so our communication is typically better than the enemy teams, and so when we get completely destroyed by the enemy team and it turns out that they were plats or diamonds, we often times just start building off-meta and not caring; I mean, come on, who's gonna report us - the one person on our team who we don't know in real life? And I mean we certainly don't build things that are COMPLETELY detrimental to the game, it's more that just we stop caring because we know we're going to lose, and while we are waiting for it to hit twenty minutes we spend time building random shit xD

Just curious for future use...what site is this? I'd actually like to know what level players I get matched up with since I am unranked lol

AraMoOse1 votes

That is lolnexus.com. Simply search for your own username while you are in a game (or in the loading screen).

Thanks, I've heard of it before, just used lolking, and other sites instead

Pretty sure it's OP.GG

You can use op.gg or lolnexus for that

I feel like when I play normals in soloQ, I get decent matchmaking (most people are plat or diamond) but god forbid when I queue up with my silver friends... If I premade with 3 silver friends, guess what I face? All plat or diamond.

It's like the system only looks at the player with the highest MMR and focuses purely on that when searching for a match.

This was me queuing solo, was not even a premade lol

Is this teambuilder? That happens quite a lot in teambuilder. ALthough sometimes it's just because the enemies are trolls in normals.

Except the MMR in general is good. If the person trolled and lost a lot in normals, then they would have a low normals MMR.

You don't understand how matchmaking works...The OP.GG client pulls data from Riots API and you can clearly see where I highlighted in red the normal MMR is 560 points different for both teams; has nothing to do with ranked at all, I just highlighted that for people to easier understand the discrepancy

There is. Try "Switch to Discussion View"

Also Riot API does not share people's MMR.

OP.gg, LoLNexus, LoLking or whatever use their own algorithms to ESTIMATE MMR.

You can clearly see there is a sizeable MMR difference... OP.GG uses Riots own data and their MMR estimator is accurate in ranked, as well as normal games. 560 MMR is not coincidence; I have thousands of games played and one of the guys wasn't even level 30 lol

Thank you for that little tip about the forums, I'll use it from now on.

OP.GG uses an estimate of people's ranks a person played with recently. That's what their MMR is.

Riot simply refuses to share people's MMR for some unfathomable reason.

The weird thing is, after I went into a Lux game, coming out with 16 / 4 / 13 around 3 days ago according to op.gg, I've been getting non-stop facerolled. If I haven't been facerolled, I was super carried by my team because... I don't even know.

I played a lot of my favorite champs I have experience with (Lux, Morgana, Annie, Shyvana as of recently,) but if I'm not being carried into late-game where I eventually shine or carried overall, I lose badly in lane/the rest of the match.

My winrate has dropped over half. I lose around 75% of my games, and I have NO IDEA WHY, because I've been doing the EXACT THING I'VE ALWAYS DONE. Ward, upgrade trinket, shotcall, and try to be positive.

It's getting frustrating and demoralizing to log onto LoL, go play a game with friend around my elo, to be facerolled for seemingly no reason whatsoever...
