Ornn is No Longer Unstoppable During his W - Why I think it's a Good Idea

A lot of people have been saying that the removal of the unstoppable part of Ornn's W is basically the removal of one of his few skill expression, and that the change is bad because of that. While I can understand where they're coming from, I disagree that it's a bad change. In fact, I think it's a healthy change.

Let's compare Ornn's W to Fiora's W.

**Ornn's W: **Ornn stomps forwards, breathing fire and shielding himself for 12% max health for 2.5 seconds. The fire deals up to 10/12/14/16/18% of the enemy's max health as magic damage (minimum 80/130/180/230/280). Enemies hit by the final gout of flame become Brittle for X seconds. The next immobilizing effect against a Brittle enemy has its duration increased by 30% and deals X% of their max health as magic damage. Ornn's basic attacks knock back Brittle targets.

CD: 13/12/11/10/9 seconds

Basically:

  • Shield
  • Max HP Damage
  • Applies Brittle
  • Unstoppable

Note: Usually used for its damage or shield

Fiora's W: Fiora parries all incoming damage, debuffs, and disables for the next 0.75 seconds and then stabs in the target direction. The stab deals 90/130/170/210/250 (+100% AP) magic damage to the first enemy champion hit and slows their movement and attack speed by 50% for 1.5 seconds. If Fiora parries an immobilizing effect, Riposte stuns instead of slowing.

CD: 24/22/20/18/16 seconds

Basically:

  • Does damage
  • Hard CC instead of soft CC if blocks an immobilizing effect

Note: Usually used for its CC and CC absorbtion

Now, these are, of course, two different abilities in two different kits that do two different things. However, you can compare design philosophies:

Fiora's W is an ability designed for outplay potential/to counter specific abilities. If she does not succeed to block one, the ability does very little. Rewards good usage. Has a long cooldown.

Ornn's W is an ability designed to be generalistic. It lets him have good max hp damage in his kit, while giving him some tankiness with a shield and utility by applying Brittle. It is not an ability designed for outplay potential. Has a medium cooldown.

Being unstoppable just gives Ornn another tool in his kit, one that is unecessary and simply lets him have too much. Most of the time, you'll be using the W for the damage or the shield, and you'll just happen to block some displacement/CC. It does not make sense to be unstoppable for that kind of generalistic/medium CD ability. Ornn's skill expression should come from his Es and Rs (CC) (just like most tanks honestly).

I do understand where people are coming from, because it is true that sometimes you timed W specifically for the unstoppable, but Ornn has to lose something somewhere. He needed something removed from his kit. This change will make it so opponents won't have to worry about when to use their CC on Ornn. It's a healthy change. There are now more ways to play against him.

Besides, I think that landing a good E (especially with his Q) or R is much more skillfull than randomely absorbing CC because you happened to press W on a medium cooldown. Just my opinion on the thing.

if they just tone down his W % damage he no longer will instawin any top lane match up the removal of unstoppable w is just so random and shows how hard it is for riot to do any good balance changes.

His W damage is kinda insta win, but it's also where most of his damage comes from. It also lets him have a good matchup against tanks.

Well I mean we just have different opinions on the matter. Personally, I think if Riot never put unstoppable on his W in the first place, no one would have ever thought of putting it on an ability like this.

Phreak talks about it around the 27:30min mark here if you're curious as to his thoughts

It could be a good idea for him in the long run, but there's still the criticism that this change doesn't solve the problem people have with him one bit. Riot's vision for him clashes quite a bit with what the vocal people of the Boards want.

Personally I don't even have a problem fighting Ornn right now, and don't want to see his unstoppable go away just so he can keep his damage. Maybe shorten the window on it to make it a bit more skillful, but completely removing it is removing the one skillful thing in his kit. I would rather compare it to Garen's W than Fiora's.
