What are the cons to not having mana?

Limited range.

Limited utility.

Limited CC(most being slows).

Energy is weak outside of short fights. Health costs requires the champion to have a form of regeneration, meaning GW is a hard counter to them(if the AD will actually build it for once).

Rumble would actually be buffed with mana.

Many kits would require being buffed to make mana worth it. Or have low enough costs they they were only slightly punishing.

Weaker overall damage or higher requirements to do the same damage.

Garen is the only manaless champion that can't hurt you from a range. Or are you referring to the fact that the majority of them are melee. In which case they have the exact problems as mana melee champs so that has nothing to do with mana.

Considering you put CC right after this, I'm not sure what you mean by utility? If you mean healing and shields, then yeah, there's not many, but again, the same is true for mana champs. If you're referring to movement, literally every single manaless champion has a movement ability.

16/21 manaless champions have CC. 10 of them have hard CC.

Energy doesn't allow you to spam skills, but it is far from weak in lengthy fights. Pretty much every mage in the game falls in the same situation with cooldowns. GW is a hard counter to Vlad and Mundo, But Aatrox, Zac, and Mordekaiser aren't really going to care about it.

I honestly don't know why you think Rumble would be buffed with mana. Every single Rumble in the game that knows what they're doing does nothing but spam their skills. It doesn't take too much to figure out what happens if Rumble has mana.

I like how everybody just assumes you need to buff a kit to make having mana worth it, yet refuses to admit that manaless champions have the advantage. Those 2 points contradict completely.

If manaless champs did weaker damage overall, manaless champs who focus on damage and ignore defensive stats would be widely considered weaker than their mana bearing counterparts. The manaless champs who focus on damage and not defense are Yasuo, Tryndamere, Akali, Zed, Katarina, and Riven. Every single one of those has been complained about to no ends as being OP.

Renekton has no range. Tryndamere has no range. His slow maybe can be considered as such. Zac has almost no range. His Q isn't bad on range. But it's borderline.

Correct. Utility as in bringing more to the team than CC. Heals, shields, speed buffs, mobility effects, vision, damage enhancement. Utility is something you bring to the team, not yourself(which is why Riven doesn't count).

16/21 manaless champions have CC. 10 of them have hard CC.

Hard CC is much more common on mana champions.

Going by Riots listings:

Assassin

  • Mana - 5/11 (45%)(Echo, Fizz, Leblanc, Nocturne, Shaco)
  • No mana - 1/4 (25%) (Rengar)

Fighter(Excluding Trunde's very small knockaup)

  • Mana - 16/23 (70%) (Darius, Diana, Fiora, Gragas, Hecarim, Irelia, Jax, Jayce, Pantheon, Skarner, Udyr, Vi, Volibear, Warwick, Wukong, Xin Zhao)
  • No mana - 8/13 (61%) (Aatrox, Gnar, Lee Sin, Rek'Sai, Renekton, Riven, Shyvana, Yasou)

Mage

  • Mana 25/26 (96%) (Karthus only one without hard CC, this is a shorter list)
  • No mana 1/2 (50%) (Kennen)

Marksman (Skipping this one, they're all mana users) 9/20 have hard CC. 45%. Some is very weak or limited though.

Support. Same as Marksman. Only Nunu lacks hard CC.

Tank. Every tank, mana or not, has CC.

So mana assassins CC better. Mana mages CC better, although the numbers are really one sided in total units. And fights come out slightly ahead.

CC is limited on mana-less units. Also counted 12 hard CC's on manaless including the 2 tanks.

It's weaker till mana run outs. In very long fights, energy will shine again. But past that first rotation mana will be stronger till it's out. Unless the player is VERY good at using their energy returns.

I honestly don't know why you think Rumble would be buffed with mana. Every single Rumble in the game that knows what they're doing does nothing but spam their skills. It doesn't take too much to figure out what happens if Rumble has mana.

They often spam their flames. But you cannot spam non stop. You will overheat. There's a trick to it overall. It just looks like they're using abilities non stop because of the flame.

I like how everybody just assumes you need to buff a kit to make having mana worth it, yet refuses to admit that manaless champions have the advantage. Those 2 points contradict completely.

One of the advantages of mana-less is spamming abilities. Riven is a huge lane threat because at any time she can dive you. All she needs is her cooldowns up and the HP.

You can fight a Zed mid lane. Come out ahead in the trade. But he can easily win the next one, tower diving you, because you had no mana to fight back fully this time. While he got all of his energy back.

They do weaker damage.

Kennen's Q does 235+75% AP. His other two abilities have very weak damage even compared to this. And all his Q really has is the scaling. The base is low or a mage Q that does nothing else and is single target. Take that in mind and look at someone like Brand. Q will do roughly the same damage(Brand probably does more). His W/E are both ranged without setups and will out damage the rest of his kit. Brand's CC is also easier to proc although he cannot AoE it. Looking at the whole kit. Brand has a lot more damage in almost every situation. Trading AoE CC for easier CC. And trading mobility for all ranged abilities.

All of Kat's abilities are low damage other than her ult. Her highest damage ability, Q, deals even less damage if it bounces.

Akali's damage is in her Q proc, passive and ult all hitting multiple times.

A lot of these "OP" champions are not OP. They're broken. They do things that upset balance or break mechanics that shouldn't exist. Akali for example can dash someone 3 times at 700 range. Targeted. But that's about it. Her damage is all in procing her Q, her passive and hitting a few ults. That's the price she pays for having such massive sticking power. It takes multiple cooldowns for her to actually assassinate. Unless she's fed. She was broken because you couldn't escape her without your team.

Zed is broken because of the example above. He has the tools to go toe to toe with a mana user in lane. Then come back with full energy while they don't have the mana for a full fight.

Kat is broken because she can take a teamfight. And wreck everything. She can be 10% HP. Sitting in the back. All she needs is her team to set up the clean up. And do it faster than most CC projectiles travel.

Yasou is broken by being able to turn into a hyper carry with 1.5 items, having the longest duration "ranged only" CC with his wall and even if he does bad. One good knockup from his team and he wins. He's frustrating to face. Even a bad one can get to a point of doing so much damage that all he needs is a team to set him up and he can get a pentakill. I don't mind the skilled ones as much. It's the ones who try to tell me they didn't push R when I pushed R on Janna on 4 of their team members because Yasou's ult only works on one target.....

Not saying manaless champions are fine. But giving them mana 95% of the time, will not fix any of the core problems of the kit.

Typically numbers are lower in consequence.

Also wasting money if you really want to buy some items (for instance Akali with Lichbane).

the first point does not make sense. yasuo 100 crit with 2 items. how is his numbers lower. or zeds stupid damage buffs. or rengar 2-1 shotting someone.

the second point. well. you get mana so you don't run out of mana if you don't have any then whats the point? it doesn't matter if you buy an item with mana or not. you just don't need to think about it.

are you like.. wow. its a waste of gold to buy an item that has 2 stats and you need it for one while the other is useless to you.

but its also. a con to have to spend money for some essential part of your kit. that you dont have to worry about at all in other champions just because riot decided not to give them mana bars.

its like. here is this example. you have a house. that works off solar panels. and a house. that uses grid. solar house. does not need to pay the bills. while the house with the grid. pays for the electricity. you get what am saying?

I said typically. When you look at champions like Katarina, Garen and Akali, their numbers tend to be inferior.

The second point is about gold efficiency. Akali pays for mana she does not even have when she builds Lichbane. She's wasting gold. That's a drawback, if she had a mana pool she wouldn't be wasting gold.

Also you must refine the question because there are differences between Fury champions, Energy champions, and ressourceless champions.

Fury champions tend to have various effect depending on their Fury bar so they actually are managing a ressource all game long, just not the same way mana uses do.

Energy pools are small, deplete (but replenish) quickly, and there are no ways to enhance it (other than costy runes that nobody is willing to sacrifice actual stats for), so energy champions have an advantage in short squirmishes and laning phase, but in prolonged team fights, other champions actually are at an advantage because mana pools are much bigger and mana/mana regen gets itemized for.

Champions that are entirely ressourceless do have free use of their abilities all day long, but again should they need to build an item that includes mana or mana regen, they are wasting a part of their gold.

LeeSin My ult scaling disagrees with that one.

In theory yes they should have lower numbers and higher cooldowns, but in reality they don't.

items that have mana regen or extra mana are useless. aram doesnt give you energy regen so you lose out on that. half of the masteries that give mana regen are useless.

yeah i get that. BUT HOW IS THAT A CONS? what is better. to have a better renegeration of mana. OR NO MANA TO WORRY ABOUT AT ALL.? thats like. INFINITE MANA. you get my point?. how is. faster regen better than infinite.

The fact is that mana-less/resource-less champions usually have some other handicap (like high cooldowns or high cost of what ever non-mana resource they do use) to make up for the lack of mana/limited resource. Champions that use mana can abuse very high cdr combined with massive mana regeneration to effectively have spamable low cooldown skills with overall lower damage. Opting for high sustained dmg output vs high burst dmg.

you build these because you need mana? so if you don't need mana. why would you build them? you have no mana to worry about and build more efficient items that focus on something else in your kit.

I meant you wont get any bonus AP or AD from the item 3003 and item 3004 because your maximum mana will still be zero. Obviously it's a joke and there really is no downside to being manaless.

Miku Lv991 votes

There are no cons. Some of the champions that don't use mana are just otherwise not quite as good, that's all. And not having to choose the mana mastery is a big plus, since then they can deal +5% damage to low on HP champions instead.

Meep Man1 votes

Not being able to cast spells of course... yeah?

If you mean being manaless, then, well... majority of every other resource has some down side to it... mostly.

Energy is better early game, weaker late game due to having no max scaling or regeneration scaling. Fury users usually have OVERALL weaker spells without their Fury enhancements or their spells are more about damage over a long duration and never usually bursty. No resource champions usually spam spells so much that having any resource would render them next to unplayable, such as Yasuo (I know, dont stab me) or Katarina. Garen is a mystery though.

There is no inherent con to being manaless, but somehow the kits end up balanced since mana champs still get picked at about the same rate as anything else so we assume that those champs tend to have more advantages on their kit to make up for it. I THINK the USUAL advantage that mana champs have over manaless is that they have powerful, long range harass/cc tools with little to no risk that riot has to gate with mana to keep that champ from sitting under turret all day and fishing with their snare, i.e. Lux Q, Morg Q, Karma Q, Nami Q, Lulu Q, Anivia Q. Yes, there are also exceptions to this like Fizz who has no ranged ability, Mundo cleaver (although a health cost for him early in the game is really significiant), and Zed's shurikens, but I still think that is the general situation.

To be honest, having mana isn't much of a con as the point where you run out of mana and have to 'b' would not happen much sooner than when you'd run low enough on health or have enough gold that you'd want to 'b' anyways.

At one point Riot was talking about adding more items to make people feel good about using mana champs, like how the final forms for tear give bonuses based on the size of your mana pool. Probably more like a feelgood thing for the players than a balance thing since mana champs don't seem to be very disadvantaged by their pools at any level of play. I'm not sure if those ideas were scrapped or if they're being put off until the immobile mages revamp.
