My thoughts on Lyte's mass bans

Wizzleboom··2 votes·675 views

"less than 1% of players are so persistently negative that they trigger a permanent or 14-day ban, ranked restriction or even a single chat restriction." -Lyte

Dec 1 2014 = Auto 14 day bans for how many now? I had personally never had a ban or even a chat ban before this day, go figure.

" For about 95% of players, they’ll never see these harsh penalties and don’t drift close to negative behavior except on the rare bad day." -Lyte

Sorry, but I call bullshit on this statement because during my few years playing this game, I can safely say that 1/5ths to 2/5ths of they players on ANY given 5s teams are in fact being toxic verbally or even worse, by trolling. That seems like a lot more negative behavior than 5%.

Personally, I think chat bans make more sense if someone is typing something that hurts another persons feels. I think game bans make sense if someone trolls all the time. What doesn't make sense is issuing mass 14 day suspensions for the most varied reasons I have ever seen. This just shows how out of touch the person running this system is with the game and with human behavior. Not allowed to voice frustration in game when someone is feeding and ruining your promo? Okay lets just bottle that up then, that's really healthy. OH! But don't say nothing or tell them you are muting them, that was also a reason another person got a suspension. Give me a freaking break.

Here's the real point I'm trying to make here:

  1. If you want to call League of Legends a competitive sport then treat it like one. Do you think hockey players are given 14 day bans when they shit talk the other team? Nope! Realize that random smack talk is part of competition in sports and actually adds to it. Imagine if UFC fighters were ultra polite to each other in the pre fight interviews. BORING.

  2. There are features that allow you to chat filter and ignore people. Put on your big girl panties and use them if you can't handle suggestions like "Don't extend too far, just turret farm safe early game" or when you have died for the thousandth time because you won't follow the advice "stop being retarded and feeding".

  3. Trolls will always escape punishment and the trolled person will be the one punished. Some sick freaks join games just to throw them and make people rage so they can report them. These tattle tale twits end up getting their jollies off while the trolled person gets a ban for voicing their frustration. Telling people why you are frustrated is a completely normal human function. In fact, in most cases where someone is having a behavioral emergency, just asking them what is wrong will deescalate the situation considerably.

  4. The vision is unrealistic. The Internet has been around far longer than League of Legends, and it's utterly psychotic to think that your rules will change how these citizens will operate. There is slang and culture here, and although you don't see the value in it, it exists and is valued by millions of gamers worldwide. There's also the double standard where pro players stream their trolling online for thousands and aren't disciplined at all. Nice double standard there.

I've found that usually when people are complaining about being banned, they aren't giving the whole story (big surprise, huh?). Then when a red comes on and actually gives the whole story they try to justify telling people to kill themselves by saying "bu..but we were losing!"

They can't control how people behave on the internet, but they can set rules in their own slice of it. They own the game, they can set whatever rules they want. And people agree to follow them as soon as they press "I accept" on the ToS.

PFT, certainly not. If anything they should be banning more people. I was an athlete through college, and while i was captain anyone who went around disrespecting people on the other teams was benched. Some of us have respect for the world and others. I'm sorry if you support those pathetic people who were good enough to go pro but not decent enough to have good sportsmanship. It is one thing to talk trash to someone who your friends with, but its a sign of immaturity if its a stranger, esp over the internet.

I will never say anything online i wouldn't say to someone's face, and even if i would call someone names or be vulgar IRL that doesn't give me an excuse to do it to little fucking kids on a video game. Ban em all.

Also to your third point, "throw games to make people rage:" invalid. The reason for your rage, the reason for your AFK, the reason for you disrespect is irrelevant. "PUT ON YOUR BIG GIRL PANTIES" and deal with it. So you had bad people on your team? You think that gives you the right to be a dick? You think thats the first time its happened in the history of LoL? Jokes.

I have a novel solution for this problem. If losing at a video game frustrates you to the point where you feel unhealthy about not expressing your raging emotions, STOP PLAYING.

Apparently Riot beat me to the punch and offered you this solution in a convenient 14-day dose. Enjoy!

Then they shouldn't promote the game as a competitive E-Sport.

Look at your reply even, it's full of the same trolling BS that litters the game. The white knight mentality where you tell me to "enjoy" my punishment? This is just as toxic but in a passive/agressive way, you do realize that right?

In this case, I actually do literally mean that I would like you to enjoy your ban. By your own admission, League of Legends is populated by trolls and policed by psychotics. I imagine it must be a great relief to not have to play it for a while.

You're trying to make a point based on 0 evidence (do you know how many games are played worldwile to even think the small sample you participated in is relevant?). Don't say "Mass Bans" when you don't even have an idea of how many people where banned aside from you and some other people bashing Riot for their bans. Also. your "real points" are terrible.

1- UFC is staged, and the internet version of a Hockey Brawl is exactly what Riot is trying to prevent. 2- Suggesting is not a bannable offence, but saying constantly in chat "OMG report retartd Cait so stupid Go kill yourself, Unistall" is. And Lyte has told before that in game mute option is not an excuse to be a douche. For the record, if you told someone "stop being retarded and feeding", which is not an advice, is usually bannable, at least the players would do so when The Tribunal was online. 3- You are not banned for one game, but for repeated offensive behavior. A person reacting wrongly in one game will probably go unnoticed by the system. A repeating offender (aka troll) will be receiving proggresively increasing punishments. Is the system perfect? No. Should we abolish the system because it's not perfect? No. If your punishment is a hiccup on the system or you finally racked up enough cases to be noticed is something only Lyte and his team can answer you. 4- Since people in the internet are annonimous, they say the most outrageous things you will ever see. This behavior is not valued by other games as you say, otherwise LoL would not have the fame (deserved or not) as one of the worst communities.

All your post says is "I was being a douche, and got banned from it. Now I'm mad at Riot because being a douche is my way of life and I feel discriminated".

Smack talk isn't a problem. I say things like "get purpled!" when I make a play on Lulu or "u blind Lee?" when he misses a clutch Q on me and nobody reports that. Mostly people lol.

The problem is harassing people, mostly your teammates; last I checked something like 90% of reports are for players on your own team.

2 . There are features that allow you to chat filter and ignore people. Put on your big girl panties and use them if you can't handle suggestions like "Don't extend too far, just turret farm safe early game" or when you have died for the thousandth time because you won't follow the advice "stop being retarded and feeding".

"Just mute them" is not a solution. Muting is mitigation. It reduces the badness. By the time you're muting someone, your experience already sucks.

Nobody reports for your suggestion, but your "advice" is bad stuff. One, it's not actually useful advice -- obviously players don't try to be stupid and don't want to feed the opponent, so all you accomplished is making that player feel bad. Two, it's offensive.

3 . Trolls will always escape punishment and the trolled person will be the one punished. Some sick freaks join games just to throw them and make people rage so they can report them. These tattle tale twits end up getting their jollies off while the trolled person gets a ban for voicing their frustration. Habitual trolls don't escape punishment. If you troll one game, probably you won't get punished, just like if you afk one game you probably won't get punished.

You don't get punished for voicing your frustration unless you do it in an inappropriate way. Nobody punishes someone who says "dude, stop suiciding to their tower, it's not cool".

4 . The vision is unrealistic. The Internet has been around far longer than League of Legends, and it's utterly psychotic to think that your rules will change how these citizens will operate. There is slang and culture here, and although you don't see the value in it, it exists and is valued by millions of gamers worldwide.

The vision is clearly realistic because behavior in League of Legends is measurably much better than it was when I joined the community. Internet culture is a malleable thing and people are changing their behavior in game.

There's also the double standard where pro players stream their trolling online for thousands and aren't disciplined at all. Nice double standard there.

Pro players are subject to exactly the same standards everyone else is.

In either case you stated, unsportsman like conduct is punished, you don't hear about it because it's handled in house typically. Smack talking is one thing. Racist, sexist, hateful speak towards a person is another and is not acceptable. You walk to talk smack, talk smack, but keep it clean.

I'm not on the op's side and I think he is playing the victim, but you can't even talk shit cleanly in league. "gg easy" is a bannable offense now and akin to toxic behavior, and that is baby's first trash talk. With league how it is currently, if it isn't positive reinforcement then it's negative behavior. I couldn't tell you how often I get reported for verbal abuse without saying anything all game, for starting the FF vote. The audacity of using an in-game future for it's intended purpose!

If you're reported for something with no evidence, then it's not going to effect you, it's going to look bad on whoever cast the report. The reason Riot has gotten to the point that they crack down on people so hard is due to just how toxic the community can be. I've had games where I muted every member of both teams for how bad it got.
