As soon as you upgrade it to Frostfang the item become superior.
On top with the amount of Mana regen from skill tree I feel like Spellthief is more efficient and has more kill pressure.

You dont get any on hit damage/gold unless you suck at last hitting so badly you simply cant do it.
Dorans has way better mp regen.

Have you seen Frostfang? 60 hp is not a big deal when you have Range + Biscuit spawning.

Gold is not disabled for too long while farming letting you poke times to times.

for each minion you kill the cd is increased by 12 seconds so unless you give up farm i can't see how you can generate gold from the item while farming
Yrzen1 votesYou can consider Spellthief's an AP Cull. It has weaker combat stats, but eventually pays for itself, with a small bonus. Unlike Cull however, you can't really speed up its rate of gold generation, so you can't buy it late like you can with Cull.
