Pros and Cons of a Rank by Role system

This list is intended to grow based on comments that are provided. Please help me add points, and feel free to dispute points if you feel that they are inaccurate.

#Pros

  • More accurate representation of your skill per role.
  • When playing a role other than your main you would be matched against opponents at a skill level that more accurately reflects your skill as that role. For example, if I am a Diamond Mid player and a Bronze Top, when I get placed top lane, I would be against bronze players, instead of Diamond players.
  • May inspire players to improve their skill/rank in off roles.
  • Offers more confidence to teammates that you are in the appropriate level for the role you are playing.
  • Potentially easier to climb. If your rank is only determined by matches where you play that role, it would not be hurt by matches where you perform poorly due to being placed in an off-role.

#Cons

  • May establish "trow away" roles. If a player simply doesn't care what their support rank is, and they get placed into a game as a support, they may not care if they dodge, troll, or throw the match since they don't care if they climb rank.
    • This could potentially be avoided by guaranteeing positions when queing up. I think that the problem of having people rarely que up for certain roles might be mitigated somewhat because I feel like this system would encourage players to que for off roles more often.
  • Potentially complicated to implement.
  • If the matchmaking system were to place you into a match based on first available, you may get placed into your lower rank roles more often, simply because there are more matches at lower ranks.
    • This could be avoided if the system is designed to place a delay in those ques. For example, if there is a game with a bronze top position that you could fill, it may delay your placement by some time in case a diamond mid position opens up.

Please also help to offer suggestions that you think could potentially help to mitigate some of the cons.

Im in bronze its not supposed to be easy to climb nor do i want them to make it easy to climb i want them to condition their players for grueling back and forward games that are supposed to be tough to end. and rebalance it back to that state rather than adcs ripping through everything along with 2 other damage dealers and you can only deal with one because your cc is 4c cooldown (ith c being a static cooldown) with less damage and more harder conditions to activate than the dps who has 1c and 2c cooldown spells on multiple spells that does lots of damage on longer range and some times has cc that is even stronger than non damage carries cc

...... none of this has anything to do with being ranked by the role you are playing. ...

Being "easier to climb," as I said in the post, is only referring to the player's ability to climb based on their skills in that role.

They will still experience the back and forth / tough games, but they will occur because they are actually playing each respective role at a level that they are meant to be playing.

A con maybe that if you get placed as a bronze top against a bronze top, you could get stuck against a diamond mid. The only way the system could possibly work is if the entire team is at the same bronze level, and if you are a diamond mid but only bronze top, you will have developed skills that will give you a huge edge against someone who is actually just a bronze level.

No, the point to this would be to place you in either a bronze match that needs a top laner or a diamond match that needs a mid laner. If the syetem works properly, everyone in the game should be of the same division.

As for having skills that would give you the edge, as long as that knowledge translates into your gameplay, then you already deserve to be at a higher rank.

my mistake, to me it sounded like it would only match the roles. true enough but it could still mess with the system as your diamond laning skills in a bronze top lane could set someone that may deserve to be in silver back and make their climb to where they should be that much harder. Although i'm not in ranked as i'm not quite 30 yet, there is a similar problem with under 30 games where there seems to be more 30's then under 30's , and some under 30 players do deserve better then getting rolled by a team of 30's and some players in the 30's group really don't deserve the win.

I think that is where it is getting confused though. If you have the laning skills that equate to a higher rank, 1, you probably would have placed at a higher rank to begin with, and 2, deserve to climb in rank because you have those skills.

I think that is where a part of the argument for the current system comes in. As you're suggesting, if you are a Diamond Mid player, you likely already have some skills which should make you more capable of transitioning to other lanes. This is true in part, but does not place you on the same level.

To be fair, I am really exaggerating a bit when I use the example of Diamond Mid and Bronze Top. Most likely, if a player is capable of reaching Diamond in any role, they are most likely capable of reaching high Silver, low, mid, or even high Gold in other roles, due to those skills. However, there are certain aspects of playing those roles that are not intuitive enough to transfer so easily. It could even be as simple as to say that the different champions that are common for the different role are unique enough that the player simply isn't comfortable playing them.

The point of this system would simply be to evaluate and match players based on how they have shown history of performing within a role, as opposed to being matched based on the role that they perform best as, which may not even be the role they are playing in the match they are placed into.
