Just tuning in to draw attention on the fact that...

... both Ashe and Riven were buffed, and have upcoming skins, a legendary and pResTiGE one, respectively.

Those buffs are quite suspicious, for they are directed towards champions that undeniably need no buffs. That said, said changes sadly don't stand out enough in a patch with so many unecessary buffs for many other champions.

The Riven case is pretty exemplar: after an astonishing long period of her having all-over-the-top stats, and non-stop bitching for the whole time by the community, she was finally modestly, but meaningfully, nerfed; roughly a month later, Riot responded by implementing and testing two different rounds of super gigabuffs that were both met with immense community backlash; nonetheless, not even that was enough and some buff just had to make it through.

The Ashe changes skyrocketed her playrate and winrate to unacceptable numbers. This is, to me, enough evidence that the above-mentioned buffs were unnecessary.

Now, straight to the point of my post:

Is it acceptable that we, as a community, must endure an unbalanced gameplay experience for unspecified amounts of time, because of Riot sacrificing their integrity in balancing the game in order to advertise their products (or promote esports)?

Because changes implemented with the intention of making a champion so broken it will force itself into the spotlight sometimes tend to require a long amount of time to be reverted, and sometimes they become permanent (just like that 50% CDR on Vayne Q during ult, gimme a big yikes for counterplay).

I obviously believe balancing gameplay should be completely independent from skin releases.

Lately though, I'm witnessing this trend, which is worrisome... and I wish for it to be only some kind of cognitive bias. I know Riot doesn't buff every champion with upcoming skins, and I know that not all buffs are for champion getting skins. That said, I'm starting to think it is maybe necessary for the community to start gathering and listing suspicious events like those, in order to determine out of the line statistic and reveal those shady marketing tactics.

Balancing revolves around the Riven subreddit.

I've stopped buying RP a year ago. I can't stand the direction this game is going.

See the main issue for me with these unnecessary buffs is that they push me further away from ranked and any competitive mode apart from aram('competitive').

I just refuse to spend money. Neither will I play ranked. I will obviously grind in the beginning to get to gold/plat for my sweet reward, but I mostly lack any care to play ranked and I'd probably get myself banned if I'd actually play it.

This game is going downhill fast, and I'm just enjoying a custom/co-op/aram game whilst I still can, without r%%%%%ed champs that dive me in lane, because they killed me once (Riven). I remember picking udyr into riven because it was a solid counter. Now? You literally just play from your turret and play a ranged champ in the hope riven is so dumb that she pushes her wave into you all the time :P

no one believed it when ahri was getting buffed for a skin, why would anyone believe it now.

Verxint9/26/2019, 11:36:05 PM6 votes

It uses to be this happened rarely enough you could call it coincidence. But lately its been such a blatantly consistent pattern of buffing champs for skin releases I don't think they're trying to hide it

uNhoLeee9/26/2019, 6:32:28 PM5 votes

stop buying them.

Keiaga9/26/2019, 7:08:42 PM4 votes

Well Riven is number 38/48 in terms of winrate in plat+ and gets down to like 45/48 in lower elos. So her getting buffs is arguably deserved

Ashe was doing a little bit better, definitely in the better half of ADCs so she didn't NEED the buffs but we'll see how much her winrate actually increases.

Of course it's not acceptable. How can you enjoy this game if you're getting mowed down by shit that are near impossible to play against? How can you enjoy this game if your champ happens to be a underperforming troll pick champ or a a busted champ that merely selecting it can mean auto win?

An unbalanced gameplay experience can mean 2 of the following: 1- players quitting this game or play much less than before 2- players can become toxic due to the unbalanced gameplay environment

It was obvious they did this because of the skins. Riven also has her own mission for the worlds patch. It's fucking dumb.

Saezio9/27/2019, 4:29:25 AM2 votes

I blame kai'sa. Riot doesn't have the balls to nerf kai'sa's overloaded as fuck kit so they are trying to make the other ADCs relevant just so Kai'sa isn't 100% pick/ban in worlds.

Riven is an extremely popular champion that was underperforming after her last nerfs. I agree she was only buffed so quickly because she is popular(and not a problem in pro) but I don't think people were not gonna buy the skin because of the winrate.

BigFBear9/27/2019, 3:32:33 AM2 votes

Why you still make such long posts where you talk to Riot? ROFL. No one of them visiting this boards.

No they did not, Ashe has had a high winrate and pickrate all season https://www.op.gg/champion/ashe/statistics/bot

Sure sometimes Riot buffs champs that are getting new skins, They have flat out admitted to doing it As you don't want to spend 600,000 on anything and not have it sell anywhere near the break even amount, its why popular champs get more skins However that does not mean it happens every time, the fact that champs got buffed on the worlds patch probably just means that Riot wants to stop seeing the same champs in every game You know keeping one of the biggest Esports events in the world entertaining and all that Almost like Riot games is a business huh

2 Patches before the buff Riot said she was weak, which is why she's getting buffed.

already a known thing but we have people who can have someone pickpocket their pocket in front of them and say they didn't steal from them.

ShyImagoghnar9/28/2019, 9:04:59 PM1 votes

not sure how much impact a 5% slow buff/10% empowered slow buff is going to have

q "buff" is actually a nerf revert. her auto reset was removed in patch 6.20

Yääto9/29/2019, 3:11:12 AM1 votes

If we're being fair here, Riot wouldn't have touched Riven at all if it was due to skins. The overall riven changes are still a net nerf compared to her pre-nerf state in 9.16. The reverted the Q buffs and kept the incredibly long and unbearable E shield CD. Them lowering it by 2 seconds and then putting the extra 1 second on Q was god send.

All in all, the "buffs" for Ashe and Riven were very minimal and not near "game breaking" or changing as people seem to think they are.

SiG DxD9/29/2019, 10:02:44 AM1 votes

buffing shet before skins, same as legendary pyke skin and riven and all prestige stuff

it sux

Literal IRL Tree9/26/2019, 8:08:34 PM1 votes

Nerfs her q by 1 second and buffs e by 2 seconds. INSANE BUFF HOLY SHIT. They were targetting low elo to make her easier to play overall.

JustDonnyy9/26/2019, 10:33:57 PM1 votes

Ashe deserved the buff to be honest. Deny if you'd like but she wasn't super viable in lane.

Serika Zero9/27/2019, 6:06:36 AM1 votes

I disagree. Ashe either needed buffs or: Draven, Caitlin, Kaisa, Jinx, Sivir and Tristana needed nerfs.

Hayaishi29/27/2019, 6:15:08 AM1 votes

Just quit playing, it's the only way to punish Riot.

They want to sell me a competitive game yet they balance the game around their favorites.

Nøctμrne9/27/2019, 8:43:35 AM1 votes

I don't know, Ashe is more of a support champion. Immobility is the death of any champion, and if you can lock her down she's useless. Games I play against Ashe players are usually free.

It has been done. I don't remember when exactly, but I am certain that I saw something on the Boards this year precisely doing what you request: Gathering data from all patches, and put them into perspective with skin releases. And there is no clear correlation, from a statistical point of view. Meaning that usually, buffs to a champion are not correlated to him having a new skin in the past/next few weeks.

HOWEVER, it does not mean that for some specific skins, or champions, there is no correlation. To my knowledge, no such analysis has been done (for example, focused on 1375+ RP skins, or restricted to some very specific champions such as Lux/Riven/Ahri/Vayne that tend to be popular, have a lot of skins and are often modified in weekly patches.

Thilmer9/27/2019, 11:56:21 AM1 votes

I have seen this "buff a champion before releasing a legendary skin" for years, and while I understand that Riot is a company and want to earn as much money as posible, this policy crash completely with having a proper game balance.

How can you claim that you want to balance the game when you are buffing certain champions to sell more skins and everyone knows it?

The Highest Noon9/27/2019, 2:44:19 PM1 votes

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but...

This isn't new. Riot has been doing this since as far as I can remember--Season 3.

Weiss Guertena9/27/2019, 6:41:41 PM1 votes

By now it's common knowledge that Riot's bal... I mean Riot's balan... Sorry, I can't bring myself to say the B-word and Riot in the same sentence. Anyway, it's common knowledge that those changes are motivated by money first and creating an actually enjoyable game experience second. All that is left for us is to either ride with it and main Riot's golden boys/girls or quit and play an actually good game.
