Let's analyse how toxic ranked games really are (help me gather statistics!)

The Riot player behaviour team has often said that the number of toxic players in the game is fairly low, that most games have no toxicity, and that most people who claim to see negativity in almost all of their games are negative themselves and are somehow causing it.

A lot of players who don't consider themselves toxic have disagreed with this - especially ones who only played ranked - but without actual statistics to back up that disagreement.

I started keeping track of how much toxicity I saw in my ranked games and put them into a Google Docs spreadsheet, linked below:

Ranked toxicity report - Google Sheets

As you can see, there is at least some negative behaviour in almost 70% of games - which much closer matches what most people feel as the level of toxicity in this game. Behaviours on the enemy team are much harder to measure, unless they are being toxic in all-chat. Sadly, that means that there was probably even more/worse toxicity in these games than I was able to see and record.

Of course, while 100 games is a decent sample size, it's tiny compared to the number of games played each day, and might not be representative. So, anyone who wants to is encouraged to make their own copy of the spreadsheet, clear out my data, and start recording their own, then post the results here.

The rules: You need to be positive or neutral in all your games. You are not allowed to be toxic yourself in the games. Absolutely no flaming or excessive negativity.

If you break the rules (find yourself being negative for whatever reason), you can simply discard that game from the spreadsheet and continue to record games where you adhered to them.

What the measures mean: Minor: Some small amount of flaming or blaming or negativity. That is, minor for League. Someone who insults another player for a bad play, keeps trying to surrender even though the game is fairly even, or throws criticisms in a hurtful way might fit in this category. Medium: A higher level of negativity. Examples here would be someone using harsher insults, constantly insulting, unconstructively criticising, blaming, or flaming others, or someone keeps doing minor negative behaviours constantly throughout the game. Extreme: Serious cases of verbal abuse. Things like wishing death or incurable diseases on teammates, constant harsh flaming, and generally ruining the game for anyone with chat enabled. AFK / Leaver: The player leaves the game or goes AFK on purpose, to make the team lose. Troll: People who are actually trolling. Things like intentionally feeding, intentionally getting allies killed, doing nothing but farming and stealing farm and refusing to help in any fights or taking objectives, etc. count here. People playing badly or picking unusual champions does not count as trolling, don't include it.
