But little did I know that I needed either 500 blue essence, a Sion permanent, or a Sion shard in order to achieve rank 6.

Well now I know why everyone is claiming the system is stupid. I mean...why do we need blue essence to get a mastery level? I mainly get skins in my hextech boxes! Why can't it just be token based?! Why isn't two tokens enough?

Because they wanted to add another IP spending system... I really doubt they are going to put a dent in my 140k IP though....

In a future patch (either next one or possibly the one after), you'll be able to buy mystery coins for IP, which give champion shards. If you happen to get the champion shard you need to use it directly for the mastery upgrade, great, if not, you can disenchant it for the blue essence.

You'll be able "soon". They want to add a new item (called "Mystery Coin"?) that will give you a random Champion Shard. With 2 of these, max 3, you'll have enough Blue Essence.

Now, they didn't say what would be the price of this item. My best guess is 2100 IP.
