When to use a certain support?

I still don't know when to use a certain support. Do you match YOUR adc or go against the opponent's bot lane (usually support)? What makes a support a good pick in a situation?

Ranged over melee if you want aggressive ( Leona and Blitzcrank are exceptions for obvious reasons). do not play Braum without being able to use your abilities to their most effectiveness, or against Morgana . Janna if you can she is really good at counter engage, and her shield is a damage buff, so works well with all. Soraka works for any situation except for against a Lucian or an Ezreal because they can move out of your Q easily. Tanks usually are safe, and are played passively. Ranged is for aggressive lanes, like Jhin Ezreal Lucian Draven . Do not go aggressive with Jinx or Vayne as the adc. They both need a few items in their inventory before they really start to do work, so it will be a farm lane until 6 ish or a damage item like item 1038 is picked up.

Use Nami when there is a river nearby, as that is when she is strongest.

People seem to like Nautilus support, but I feel like he is wasted there. Why I only play him Jungle and Top. When I play support, it's always Lulu. Her kit is so much fun, especially Whimsy.
