Are troll picks in low elo ranked games ok?

Hello everyone reading this. Thanks for stopping by. Obviously none of us are the final authority on this - unless you are a Riot employee and can pass judgement on whether or not someone is banned or punished for this - but please share your thoughts in a respectful manner below. I'll explain real quick what I think ranked is supposed to be and some of my thoughts on the issue. For quick clarification sake - by troll I mean champions outside their normal role(s); not simply picking teemo or something like that.

What is the purpose of ranked? Ranked is for players to test their skills and prove how well they stack up against all other players in a region. It is a place where players are supposed to put forth maximum effort to win (without cheating). Yes players should have fun, but it is not the place to do stupid stuff and goof around at cost of the game or your teammates' ability to enjoy the game. It is not the place to practice a champ for which you have no skill and knowledge on. Sure if you are challenger, you can probably just grab a champ and play it respectably, but this is low elo. You probably can't do that, and even if you CAN manage to pull it off, you shouldn't be attempting it. Finally, ranked is also not the spot to try for highlight videos at the cost of your team/the game. If you are dead set on making a pentakill kha'zix montage - go do it in regular pvp or let it happen naturally in ranked; do not force it and end up costing team the game because you try to 1v5 and fail or something.

My thoughts I completely understand trying champs in new roles. I have no problem with people playing stuff that they have PRACTICED and are GOOD (relative to their elo) at and can make work in MOST cases. So if you want to play soraka jungle or something, I usually won't have a problem with it - I myself pioneered morgana support, naut support, naut top, kayle support etc. before it became a "thing" with high elo and was copied by low elo. Thus, I understand completely how champs can be surprisingly effective in odd roles for which no one plays them. If it's actually good I respect your innovation. But there is a difference between something being good and making something work because YOU are good. For example, someone might play 6 mejai darius mid and manage to win the game; however, that doesn't mean it should be played. In such a scenario the darius player won because of his skill or the other team inting - not because he found a great new role or build for a champ. Something like that darius mejai (which gives him no stats) mid has no place in ranked games.

So say you CAN play a troll champ, but SHOULD you? When deciding consider these two thoughts and more. Thought one - team comps - I know it's "low elo" and you can "play anything" and make it work... except when you can't. I personally feel there needs to be SOME semblance of drafting and building for your TEAM comp. So if you have 3 squishies and a bruiser vs several assassins and/or burst damage champs, you probably shouldn't lock in a squishy support jungle for instance. Because your frontline bruiser cannot peel 5 enemies, you lose any fights vs invading enemy jungler, and you cannot easily kite and dps down the enemy team; someone will get caught and bursted. Second thought... your teammates have probably already had a tilting game or two for various reasons recently. They will be on edge. They might harass or even leave you in champ select to avoid playing with your "troll" pick - causing much longer queues. In game, they will be more likely to rage quit or intentionally feed if their lane is going poorly and you are perceived (true or not) to not be helping them out enough. All this goes along with simply picking a champ for an odd role or doing a non-standard build. So ask yourself if it is worth it and if you can deal with that.

With that out of the way... my final thought/stance on troll picks and builds. If it can work and - key thing here - DOESN'T MAKE IT HARDER FOR YOUR TEAM TO WIN, then go for it. If it makes the game harder to win and you are winning in spite of your build or in spite of playing a champ in an unusual role, there is a place for that... but it is not ranked games. This includes picking a champ where it is good for said unusual role but makes for a horrible team comp. That's my thoughts on the issue. Please, share yours RESPECTFULLY below.

People can play whatever they want at any position.

Certain champions excell at certain positions but doesn’t mean a “troll pick” can’t work.

Yeah that's basically what I've tried to state. It's not a question of if it CAN work, but if you SHOULD play it. If you are smurfing or just practiced enough, you can make just about anything work in lower elo - until you run into someone equally or better skilled and practiced and an enemy team that drafted and played better across most of the roles. Then it's a matter of... is your champ actually good in that role, or were you just winning because YOU are good? If it's the latter, you will lose the game when playing a good champ for the role might have made all the difference. If it's the former, you might win - or would have lost regardless of playing a "non-troll" champ. See what I mean?

So that's the questions... Is it ok to play a champ that's good in a role even if it isn't played in that role? Is it ok to play one that's bad in a role just because you can typically make it work?

Technically both are ok; however, I feel you do a disservice in the latter case and it shouldn't be done in RANKED. I have no problems with it being done in pve or in my pvp non-ranked games because those are generally more chill or about trying new potentially stupid stuff and going as ham as you want. But when you are supposed to be doing your absolute best to win (including drafting properly), I don't think putting your team at an innate disadvantage (because the champ is bad for the role and team comp) is ok just because you THINK you are good enough to pull it off. But that's my opinion. I want to know what others think. Thus - my vote would be "depends".

The definition of a troll pick is highly subjective. I'm basically a Taric one trick and often play him top and jungle. Like anyone, I have bad games. When I have bad games my team calls me a troll for picking Taric not in the support role even though he is by far my best pick. A couple days ago I had a 4/10/11 game and then an 8/0/5 game. Both were against Illaoi. The first one I lost because Illaoi was better and the second one I won because I was better. It had absolutely nothing to do with champion choice.

Taric top is entirely viable. It works well if you know how to play. Taric top would fall in the category of a champ in an unusual role but one where he/she can be perfectly viable - not a champ that wins in the role simply because the player is far better than their opponent. Something like this I have no problem with. Even if it loses; I know it was a viable pick and one which is chosen to benefit the team too. We all lose lane sometimes. As a melee frontliner, it's your job to tank and engage or peel for your teammates - making you have far worse kda in a losing game than if you play a backline champ usually. 4/10/11 isn't even a horrible score. That many assists shows you were making plays for your team or at least attempting to.

Just new unknowledgeable teammates or toxic angry ones if they're flaming and reporting you for a game like that - at least so far as kda would indicate. I've been there plenty of times with ignorant/toxic teammates.

As long as you play in the Position you were given and you play to win you are technically allowed to play whatever the hell you want.
