Top Tier Picks at Worlds for Every Role

I started by picking out all the champions that had greater than a 40% pick/ban rate and greater than a 50% win rate at Worlds. This gave me two ADCS, two supports, two junglers, four tops, and one mid. Because mid has a much greater champion pool, I expanded this to 25% PBR to pull in another two mids. This pulled in another ADC as well.

ADC

Lucian (78% PBR - 52% WR) Twitch (44% PBR - 70% WR) Corki (28% PBR - 70% WR)

Lucian was obviously the gold standard for ADCs at Worlds. In one sense, the Twitch win rate is potentially misleading in that he tended to be a priority pick for some of the stronger team while he was not really picked by many teams, but on the other hand that he was a priority pick for some of the better teams says something in an of itself, especially coupled with his win rate. Corki's success is interesting. Based on the results at the Quarterfinals and beyond, I would say that it is very helpful that he has a better early game against Lucian than does Trist. He did not seem to do very well against Twitch, but again some of that may be driven by the fact that stronger teams tended to play Twitch. Twitch and Corki were actually both played just over 20 times, but Twitch was banned much more often.

Jungle

Lee Sin (92% PBR - 55% WR) Rengar (42% PBR - 85% WR)

These were the only two junglers at Worlds with more than two games played and a positive win rate. That says a lot. Kha was typically considered the second best option after Lee Sin, but he had only a 43% win rate. Jarvan IV was typically the next pick, but he had an abysmal 35% win rate. Elise didn't do any better at 33%. Rengar, like Twitch, is potentially a bit misleading in his win rate because he tended to be played by the better teams, but again that says something. He was unusual in that he was actually banned more than he was picked.

Support

Janna (67% PBR - 62% WR) Thresh (80% PBR - 54% WR)

Please excuse me while I go back to spamming Janna in solo queue to try to rank up before the season ends.

Top

Alistar (100% PBR - 80% WR) Maokai (92% PBR - 62% WR) Ryze (87% PBR - 59% WR) Rumble (51% PBR - 52% WR) Irelia (26% PBR - 66% WR)

There has been a lot made of the fact that melee is useless right now. I think it's worth noting that the three highest pick/ban rates at Worlds all belonged to melee champions. These were Lee Sin, Alistar, and Maokai. Lee Sin is obviously valued for his ridiculous mobility and ability to provide map control early. Alistar and Mao are valued for the exact opposite reason, and show that CC tanks are incredibly valuable if they can actually tank - it's just that these are the only two in the game at the moment that can actually tank damage late game. Mundo's spectacular failure shows that if you don't have % damage reduction and hard CC, you aren't worth anything as a tank at the moment. Ryze warrants an entire post unto himself, but suffice it to say he may just possibly be overtuned. Rumble I suspect is largely there for the same reason Orianna enjoys solid success as a mid laner - a great ult that can single-handedly swing team fights.

Edit: Added Irelia based on a suggestion from Don Eulrich, who noted she was successfully picked to counter Ryze.

Mid

Orianna (41% PBR - 51% WR) Jayce (25% PBR - 58% WR) Yasuo (35% PBR - 66% WR)

At first glance Yasuo appears to have been the most dominant mid laner, but his popularity fell off a cliff as Worlds went along. Jayce was the exact opposite, as he gained steam as a popular pick as Worlds went along. It just so happens that Ryze counters Yasuo while Jayce can poke Ryze safely from a distance. I'm sure this has nothing to do with it though. Orianna, like Rumble, is just a solid champion who has a great ult that can single-handedly swing a team fight. Add in her utility, and she appears to be best in class for mages.

The Irelia comment is a good point. Irelia actually should have made it onto my top list, as she had a pick/ban rate of 26% and a win rate of 66%.

I wonder if this means Riot will FINALLY nerf Lee Sin and Thresh.

They've skirted through so many balance patches with love taps instead of actual nerfs.

There is absolutely no reason to nerf either of those two champs. They have already nerfed both these champions to where I feel they are good but not overpowering. If you played Thresh or Lee at the time they were released, you would understand what I'm talking about.

If a champion is near 100P&B then this is absolutely an indicator that he´s too dominant.

There is absolutely no reason to nerf either of those two champs.

You mean aside from the fact that they are so blatantly overpowered as to make the alternatives completely irrelevant? yeah I'm sure you're right. Given that fact though, I'd say Riot may finally nerf these characters down to the same level as their competitors.

No, he's right. There is no real reason to nerf these guys. This is why we can't fix anything as a community; we are too focused on who is too strong rather than who is weak. If we nerf these two (who honestly don't deserve it) someone along the 121 champion pool will take it's place thus re-continuing the cycle.

Lee doesn't deserve a nerf.

Thresh doesn't need a nerf.

Lee doesn't deserve a nerf. Thresh doesn't need a nerf.

Based on...? you cannot just say "this blatantly overpowered character doesn't need a nerf" without justifying it. Balance is based on around alternatives; if these two are unambiguously better choices than the rest, they are by definition, in need of nerfs.

Did you not read patch 4.13?

also shows that jungle (and support) don´t really have any variation atm and direly need changes. On supports kiting/disengage/peeling is superior to anything else, as ADCs are just way too dominant. On junglers it´s quite the opposite...you want someone that can go in, but also just dominates duelling in early stages so you have the map-control from the get go (if the other jungler has to fear you his actions are already limited). On Toplane I still think Ryze is a little overrated, just noone had been willing to really play a counter to him there (though the few that picked Irelia to counter him with some early jungle support mostly won the game hard - maybe you should include Irelias Successrate as a counterpick during the tournament).

Rengar isn't really a fair pick as most pros don't seem to be very good at him. Dandy is a Rengod, though, and it shows.

We've seen in the past what happens when pros who aren't good at Rengar or don't play him often pick him in games.

Maokai and Alistar barely qualify as "melee".

Their % dmg reduction means they can get tanky even with the terrible state of defense - which is an incredible bonus in a game with basically no tanks.

They both have absurdly overtuned kits with a ton of sustain/damage/CC, they don't have to contend with any of the struggles standard melee champions face - Mao and Alistar having success doesn't mean melee is in a passable state right now.

Maokai and Alistar barely qualify as "melee".

You're using a weird ass definition of melee.

Earl Eulrich1 votes

melee: someone that has to be close by for an extended amount of time to have an impact.

both AListar and Maokai don´t really have to be close to anyone long, they just get their combo/cc done and then can be ignored while everything is on cd. So yea, they have melee-attacks, but they donßt need to use them to have success in the game, all their impact is more or less ranged.

12tales1 votes

What term do you propose we use for people who have melee auto attacks and people who have ranged auto attacks?

'Cause Alistar, Amumu, Blitzcrank, Braum, Cho'Gath, Evelynn, Fizz, Galio, Gangplank, Gragas, Jarvan IV, Kassadin, Katarina, Kha'Zix, Lee Sin, Leona, Malphite, Maokai, Mordekaiser, Nunu, Rumble, Talon, Taric, Yasuo, Yorick and Zed don't really fit that definition and, well, there are only so many terms that we can reasonably expect to rise to common usage.

Earl Eulrich1 votes

I actually think the terms Riot uses do have some better use here..."melee" and "ranged" are just somewhat missleading, as it´s always the whole kit that makes a Champion what he is, not him having a melee or ranged-AA (ok, for marksmen this is the case, but this is described by their role).

12tales1 votes

What terms should I use, tho? If Melee and Ranged don't actually refer to whether has Melee or Ranged auto attacks.

Earl Eulrich1 votes

you can use those terms for describing the AutoAttacks, but I think it´s pretty useless for a discussion about almost anything regarding LoL currently. So using them on impact-range seems more accurate.

12tales1 votes

Having ranged auto attacks is huge in pretty much every lane. It determines when you can CS, how you have to position in lane, how much risk you have to put yourself at to attack a tower, how much they have to commit to trading when someone with ranged aas is autoing you - it tells you a huge amount about how a champion plays and how you need to play against them. Just as important as 'do they have CC' or 'do they have mobility.'

Earl Eulrich1 votes

In theorie, yea...in practice Mao can clear waves from afar with q or e and has no troubles whatsoever desppite his melee-Autoattack. GP can just pistol most of the wave down from afar. So for me it´s pretty much a missleading term if used that way.

Just remember players like dandy and insec are mains on rengar and leesin. If they dont get banned they normally will pick them...

If you have 100% win rate on rengar, but only dandy played him, information misleading and you're making the mistake of not putting the information correctly together. You should add over how many people played.

Earl Eulrich1 votes

he already mentioned it....and it doesn´t rally matter anyway, as it still just shows that the Champion is basicaly too strong in capable hands if he has a 70%+ winrate.

The reason Alister was pick/ban was fixed in patch 4.15, but the worlds were played on 4.14. It was a small matter of being able to auto during his head butt (with sheen proc) and then knock up and stun the enemy long enough for sheen to come off cool down. Combined with his ult which let him be tanky even if he rushes Trinity Force. Now he does not get the extra auto and would not be pick/ban.

Mundo fails because he is an HP tank, and auto attack / on hit focused marksmen are meta right now. And BotRK is strong right now so they will build it and make his best tank stat work against him.

Also why have you not already been spamming Janna? http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=FrsTE1vpoXM
