So, support masteries are worth about ~1000 gp over the course of a game...

Assuming a 32 minute game. GPM is gold per minute.

Greed - 9 gpm, or about 270 gold. Scavenger - 12 gpm for the first 10 minutes if your ADC is good. 6 GPM if you are stuck with someone like me. So ~300 on average? Wealth - 40, enough to buy another biscuit or half a ward. Bandit (ranged) - 36 gpm during laning at best, less afterward. This one is tough for me to peg down, so maybe 400-500?

So anyways this gets me to thinking about 2 things and without going into support items that generate gold.

  1. I think there needs to be a more elegant solution to getting supports gold beside making them spend 6 points in the utility line just for gold which is equivalent to maxing out archmage and devastating strikes.
  2. If we are going to give supports free gold why can't a bloody support just get real skill tree and a free sightstone (blue if you must) if he maxes it out? Maybe put it at the end of the other trees as an either or option for the last point in the tree. You can get havoc or start with a sightstone, your call but not both. Legendary guardian or a sightstone. Ugh... wanderer... or a sightstone. Maybe just make that tree the junglers/utility tree instead of obvious support-only tree is frankly quite insultingly obvious. A sightstone to start with is much more useful and frankly supports are buying it anyways. Instead of playing games with the players, just give supports our sightstone to start the game with and let's move on with things. No one is going to complain if the free power a support gets from his masteries is a sightstone to start the game with. Now they might complain if they get stuck with an idiot support who didn't take that mastery but frankly, that's a problem for the new (noob) player experience team.

Now if the sole problem with number 2 is everyone in the game starts with a sightstone THAT WOULD BE THE BEST BLEEPING PROBLEM IN THE BLOODY WORLD! I like to think of it as a problem that's better than the other guy's solution.

Bumping this because it is still on my mind.

The support tree is good because it helps them get to the 800 sight stone quickly which allows them to start saving money for better items sooner. It also reduces the cd on trinkets which is very helpful as it lets you sweep more often. The tree is incredibly powerful as is for that position.

But I'd rather just start with the sightstone than support stuff that'll give me the GP of a sightstone after way too long.
