Would the game be more fun if last hitting wasn't a thing?
The first skill you need to learn in league (after using the keyboard for abilities) is to last hit creeps. Without doing that, you're not going to have fun in the lategame because you would be too far behind in gold.
Now let me tell you that I'm not some bronzie who's too lazy to get good at CSing and hopes for a shortcut. I'm Diamond 4 toplaner, so I do actually know how to cs decently, especially under the turret (as a wukong main, that's my natural habitat in the early game).
I just think that last hitting is boring, makes the game slow paced (with an early game that's just a grind phase that you need to get through) and creates an unnecessary and boring skill wall that new players have to overcome. The gap between a new player and an average seasoned player is so huge because of this. If league of legends wants to stay the biggest moba and most popular game overall, then they need to be appealing to new players. Having a steep curve on entry doesn't help this. It would be like having the ability to juggle the ball a base requirement to play soccer. Soccer is really easy for someone to learn which has helped making it so popular. And yes, it would make the game more 'casual' in this way, but with champion kits becoming more and more complex and items having unique effects nowadays, there's enough room to really shine in other areas of the game, not to speak of teamplay. In the LCS, it isn't the team that is the best at last hitting that wins the game. Last hitting is something that they have to do while playing the actual game.
Now of course removing the requirement to last hit for gold would greatly offset the balance, but champions and items can be rebalanced around that. That's not an argument in the long term. It would take away an aspect of the game, a skill that you can excell at. But is it really important to have a bunch of skills that are so boring for the majority of players? A wrong assumption is that the average skill level would go down. It won't suddenly become easier to become diamond. Diamond still contains the 2% top players. The skill requirements just shift from one aspect to the other. Perhaps I wouldn't reach diamond anymore because my other skills might not be as good. However, I'm pretty sure I would have more fun.
I'm not suggesting to just remove the need to last hit and give the gold for being nearby like exp. That would create an uninteractive play where people would just sit at max distance to collect wealth. There would have to be other mechanics added to the game so that you wouldn't actually ignore the waves. E.g. requiring to hit the minion at least once to get gold, less gold is given the closer the minions are to your own turret, etc. It would be a change that requires a lot of preparation and follow-up but when done right, I think the game can be more fun for veterans, more appealing for new players and lower the skill difference between a fresh level 1 and a bronze 5 smurf.
