Title says it all. I know Veigar is one of them.

Nearly every AP champion to be honest.

Annie Brand Cassiopeia Cassiopeia is somewhat sustained oriented Ezreal FizzHeimerdinger AP Ezreal. A Fizz that is doing decent. Heimerdinger under his ult, Karma Leblanc Lux Karma's empowered Q chunks out. Morgana Nidalee Orianna Nidalee on a hunted target with medium to low health. Swain Syndra Ryze Ryze is somewhat sustained oriented. Velkoz TwistedFate Viktor Not quite sure on TF and Vik to be honest, but I've seen them chunk health. Xerath Zyra Veigar Ahri Katarina Zilean Zilean somewhat if he lands two time bombs. Akali Shaco Nunu Nunu under a full channeled ult Diana maybe, but I haven't checked her out in a while.

Some of these are debatable, so don't get on my case if one of you disagree with something up there. Didn't include Azir since he is more sustained than bursty.

Ahri is considered as AP burst? I think she is more like AP poke

Princess Emma1 votes

Not burst per-say, but she lacks sustain once everything in her kit has been thrown out.

Although someone like Janna has no sustain or burst, Ahri will always chunk out significantly more than her, or rather she has potential to burst someone out.

The Whamboozler1 votes

Ahri charms you then unloads all her spells. Just because she pokes you down first doesn't mean she can't burst you. She's an ASSASSIN, after all. She's just a very versatile one who can build semi-tanky and for utility and sustained damage too.

AP burst is just doing a shitload of magic damage based on AP. Most mages have a decent level of burst, but ones that specialise in burst include these examples:

Akali Annie Brand Diana Leblanc Lux Nidalee Syndra Viktor

These are probably all the people I'd call AP assassins/burst mages in the game.

ap burst is when syndra (or veigar) ult you as the adc and you are 1hit.

or when lb q r e you and you are dead again (as adc/support/mid)

Opportunistic1 votes

Annie, ryze, katarina, akali, list goes on. It means they combo you and you lose a lot of health really fast and they either kill u or walk away till their skills come off cool down

So it's kind of saying a champion can do massive amount of damage based on one or more skills?

Princess Emma1 votes

Burst is being able to pump out loads of damage in a short amount of time. Every champion has burst, even ones like Nami, but in a weak tier of their own.

There is burst, and then there is sustain. Burst champions typically have more burst than sustain champions, but they lack sustain.

Sustain champions have less burst, but they have more sustained damage, so even if their abilities are on cool down, they can still do a constant flow of damage.

Brand is an example of a burst champion. His abilities pump out loads of damage, but when they are on cooldown; he cant do decent sustained damage to back it up, and he is left vulnerable until they are off cooldown.

AP are typically burst oriented. Relying on abilities.

Jinx is a sustain champion. She isn't going to chunk your health out instantly, but it will constantly whittle with no down time.

AD champs are typically sustained oriented. Relying on auto attacks.

So let me get this straight by an example I came up:

Leblanc uses her w and r, but when they are on cooldown, she still has her q and e to finish an enemy off. While Jinx is sustain, for example, she used all her abilities, but not being able to finish it off but close to. IS this how it works?

Princess Emma1 votes

Almost. Sustain champions typically rely on auto attacks (attack damage champions). Burst champions typically rely on their abilities (ability power champions).

Let's throw a tank into the mix

Chogath has 4000 health. Cho'gath will remain stationary and perform no action.

Leblanc uses her entire kit on Cho'gath. Cho'gath loses 1000 health in 5 seconds. All of LeBlanc's abilities are now on cooldown, and she has to rely on auto attacks to continue the rest of her damage.

Her damage per second starts off high, but then her damage per second starts to fall off because she relies on her abilities to do damage and not auto attacks, and since they are on cooldown, she will barely be doing damage until they are back up. She was able to take out a chunk of Cho'gath's health, but now she has to wait a while to do that same damage again. She can do a lot of damage, but can't do consistent damage, since she has too much downtime. She is burst oriented.

Jinx uses her damaging offensive abilities, and they only do 300 damage to Cho'gath, Jinx's auto attacks is where a majority of her damage comes from, so even if all her abilities are on cooldown, she can still do consistent damage because she relies on auto attacks and not abilities, so she has sustained damage. Her damage per second is not high like Leblanc's, but her damage per second never goes down, since you can always auto attack, but you can never keep casting abilities (some champions excluded of course).

tl;dr

Leblanc_ relies on her abilitie_s to do damage, and not auto attacks. You can always auto attack, but you can't always use your abilities. She has_ high burst_ and low sustain since she won't always be doing damage since she relies on her abilities and not auto attacks.

She is a**_ burst_** champion

Jinx relies on her auto attacks to do damage, and not her abilities. You can always auto attack, but you can't always use your abilities. She has high sustain and low burst since she will always be doing damage regardless if her abilities are on cooldown, since she **_revolves around auto attacks _**to do damage, and not abilities.

She is a sustain champion.

That makes a lot of sense now! Huh, still got a lot to learn even tho I am at 28. Any ty for this info. I don't know a lot cause I main mid, but I play supp most, but I still like support. Might try out for Zed tank today (maybe.)

AP burst is technically MAGIC DAMAGE burst. There aren't really any champs who build AP to do physical damage tho, and it's shorter to say... so AP burst is the term people use.

In any case, it's people who do a LOT of magic damage very quickly. They then usually have to wait a while before they can do much of anything, since they often have long cooldowns on their spells.

Champs who have high AP burst: Ahri , Akali , Annie , Brand , Diana , Katarina , Leblanc , Lux , Syndra , Viktor , Veigar.

This is not including plenty of other AP champs who can build glass cannon and a shocking amount of damage quickly. Full AP Amumu or Malphite do a shocking amount of burst. They're just often better used as tanks most of the time. Also almost any mage and even some tanks Chogath and supports Sona do a fair bit of burst. It just means their damage comes out fast and then they have a time where they do NO damage before they can hurt you again.

So if someone says AP burst... that's what they mean. A dumptruck full of magic damage delivered fast.

Shukuchi1 votes

TF as well?

The Whamboozler1 votes

Yeah, Fate is pretty bursty when you set up his combo. A lot of mages that I didn't put down can drop fair burst. For instance Malzahar does most of his damage through DoTs... damage over time usually doesn't mean burst.... BUUUUUT anyone who's ever eaten a full ult combo from Malz knows he still kills you PRETTY quick. Mages in general lean more towards burst than sustained damage. Sustained damage is more the trick of AD champs... specifically marksmen.

It's easier to list mages that DON'T rely on burst than those who do. Cassiopeia and Ryze are the only two who come directly to mind. They play more like marksmen than mages really, since they have incredibly low cooldowns and rely on spamming spells instead of blowing you away with a quick combo then being useless for 5-10 seconds. Rumble and Swain also technically fall more into sustained damage... as does Singed if you want to call him a "mage". There are more, but it's usually pretty obvious who fits and who doesn't.

In general, assume the following... if you run into a champ and they push all their buttons at you there are two ways it ends.

A: you are either flat out dead... or they didn't quite have the damage to kill you and you can flee while they have very little left to hurt you with... probably just lackluster auto attacks.

or B: They relentlessly spam spells and crap at you while you struggle to flee or burst them first. Sustained damage champs tend to be more spammy but rarely run dry of pain to dish out.

I am only looking for mid AP burst. And I still don't get it. And isn't TF considered as a AP burst as well? And how so? This is how I explain AP burst when looking over some of the comments: a champion who does massive amount of damage very quickly, like assassins.

Shukuchi1 votes

For example: Ahri charms, fox fire and orb of deception, finishing of with spirit rush and ignite, killing an enemy less than 8 seconds. TF gold cards, q, auto attack, flashes, ignite and gold card, finish. I think I am getting it now, champions who does insane amounts of damage, killing the opponent really fast and without time to react or escape. Is that how it goes?

Princess Emma1 votes

That is essentially how it is.

If the target is squishy, burst damage is better. If the target is tanky, sustained damage is better (unless you can get their health very low with your burst).

GreenLore1 votes

Ap-burst pretty much just means that the champ is able to deal a lot of magic damage in a relatively short amount of time. Usually these champs will unload all their spells at once before retreating to the backlines again until their spells are up again.

Shukuchi1 votes

Name all the MID AP burst you can, so I know what I am up against.
