Things I Learned About Riven from Boards

This essay is listed in my "Master List of Essay Threads" under the title "On Things I Learned About Riven From the Boards"

Did you know?

  • Each of Riven's q's move her 2000 units, more than any other non ult gapcloser in the game, and all of them can go over walls and knock up for 2 seconds each
  • Riven's w is a targeted aoe stun with 1000 radius that stuns for 3 seconds and cannot be reduced by tenacity
  • Riven's e moves her 1500 units and shields for 100% of incoming damage for 5 seconds, on a 1 second cooldown
  • Riven's ultimate gives her 1000 bonus ad, 500 extra range on her spells, and can be activated again to deal 100% max hp true damage to all targets in a 3000 range 90 degree aoe cone in front of her, resetting on kill or assist
  • If riven holds onto her q charges until the last second, right after she uses her third q she can immediately q again 9 more times, this is because riven only has cooldowns as a resource and luckily comes with a base cooldown reduction of 90%
  • Despite being a glass cannon melee ad champion, riven can always make it past the enemy frontline right onto a squishy enemy carry without being interupted. This is because rivens base 90% cdr includes her flash, which is therefor always up and can be combined with just a single 2000 range q to zip right past all potential defenders
  • By taking your hand off the mouse and using it to mash rivens ability keys with two hands, you can double her damage. this is why she's known as the 'no skill faceroll' champ of legend
  • Riven's passive is that every time she gets a spell, she gets five sheen procs on her spells instead of autoattacks so every spell deals 250-500 extra damage after the first.
  • Riven main's ban their counters and nothing else in draft, therefor unlike other champions Riven never faces a counter lane.
  • When Riven is a selected champion, the enemy team is disabled from buying armor items in the store, especially if they are a top laner.
  • Riven leaves roughly half of her games. The best strategy is often to just not lose long enough for her to afk.
  • At one time, red elixers could be bought at level 1. No riven ever lost a game during this time.
  • All riven players religiously watch boxbox streaming because occasionally they get the rare opportunity to see a mysterious super hot girl who is cosplaying as riven and plays just as well as boxbox, but is totally a girl and not boxbox
  • Riven has a hidden passive that draws the attention of the enemy jungler whenever she is losing lane, allowing her to farm two champions at once in order to catch back up
  • Even when losing lane hard and down many levels and cs, one kill can put riven back in the game. This is because unlike other champions riven gains 100x normal xp and 3000g on champion kill
  • Unlike other champions, Riven actually has fans and a playerbase. This is a weakness, as riven is unable to have anyone speak in her defence without the statement being dismissed as 'defending their waifu' and thus logically completely invalid regardless of the players ranking or personal knowledge on the matter *Unlike other champions, riven players can buy items from the shop, most notably she can get free lifesteal to even out her lack of innate sustain and hp regen (by buying items that gives lifesteal and sustain like hydra and potions). She can even get free revives (by buying ga), free %hp damage (by buying botrk), free tankiness (by buying tank items), free cdr (by buying cdr items), free armor pen (by buying armor pen items) and free movespeed (by buying boots). Looking at it this way, riven truly has no weaknesses because unlike other champions, she can buy items to exaggerate her strengths or reduce her weaknesses.
  • All Riot employees are Riven (Zed, Vayne, Lee Sin and Thresh) mains which is why she is immune to being nerfed
  • Some people might argue that Riven's purely AD scaling abilities robs your team of a tank. This is grossly untrue, her E gives her (permanent) bonus HP and as the Cinderhulk meta showed us, HP is the only tanky stat you will ever need.
  • Playing Riven takes all mental capacities of any living person, that is why Riven mains dunno how to play any other champion but their apm is 100 times higher than average human.

Share your own riven facts here and I may add them to the list.

If a Riven main is on your team, you lose the game. If a Riven main is on the enemy team you lose the game.

So basically you lose any game with a Riven main?

And if there's a Riven on BOTH teams then you guessed it... You lose the game. :D

i learned that all riven mains are 50% more likely to flame and that tehy are diamond 1 smurfs getting held back by their team

But they really deserve challenjour

I learned that Riven mains need to replace their keyboards after every game due to the faceroll, button mash factor.

thats why being a riven main is hard, so expensive

Didn't know that, I'll add it.

Riven was designed by CertainlyT, just like Zed, Irelia, Urgot, Volibear, Elise, Skarner's rework, and Blitzcrank.

That's why she's so broken, obviously.

Urgot and Blitzcrank?!? I had no idea CertainlyT was at Riot that long, I thought his first champ was Darius...

Adrian Umbra14 votes

...

None of the champions I listed were designed by CertainlyT. I would advise taking any "facts" you read here with a grain of salt. When in doubt, check it out. CT designed Darius, Zyra, Yasuo, Thresh, Kalista, and Morde's Rework.

According to the boards, half of all Riven games she goes AFK. I've seen this repeated multiple times.

In reality her leave rate is 0.31, which means one leave per 300 games.

Dengeden4 votes

There was a chart that showed Riven has the highest leave rate in the game (by quite a margin too). Still, it was less than a percent and I doubt it's up to date.

ALBIØN3 votes

Actually poppy has the highest leave rate. http://na.op.gg/statistics/champion/ Riven Still has a high leave rate in NA though but if you look at higher elos (plat +) she has a mid-low range leave rate. Her leave rate spikes in gold where she has the 2nd highest leave rate but you have to take into consideration that golds think they are diamond smurfs but also there are a lot less gold+ players than silver and bronze.

hgjkdlsaf jeldvb9 votes

statistically, riven players do leave disproportionately more often than other champs.

http://i.imgur.com/kc0yZ1j.png

That source is a year old, but at 1 in 200 games, rivens are far more likely to leave than any other champs. Actually, many of the hot shit carry champs are like this.

ShinTwist6 votes

That chart is outdated, and represents a constantly fluctuating statistic; leave rates vary wildly over time.

It is of no modern relevance.

I learned a while ago that Riven players should not be allowed to win a game no matter their skill. The appropriate balance point for Riven is where a master Riven player loses the lane and the game to a rookie opponent, giving no reason to ever play her.

TurquoiseYoshi7 votes

The Boards taught me that Riven also has an innate ability that locks down your store. You then will not be able to buy any items with armor on them.

Here's something that Google taught me: Riven is a puzzle adventure video game and the sequel to Myst. Developed by Cyan Worlds, it was initially published by Red Orb Entertainment, a division of Brøderbund.

CC doesn't effect Riven

Riven is ungankable if she uses her Q to move up 2000 units and E that makes her get a 5000 damage shield and her 1000 3 second radius stun to harass you she will have those abilities back up in 1.5 seconds with no cd

EchoZeero6 votes

Jungling Rivens have insane clear time because the camp mobs just lay down and die as soon as they see Riven. Since she's so OP that she doesn't need the Blue or Red buff, no one ever jungles with her.

Because of how powerful she is, Riven has special limits that only allow her to buy AD items from the store.

Because of her harsh lore, Riven players are all traumatised and therefore are given a free pass to say anything they like.

So Riven is the Chuck Norris of LoL...

Huh...

AL0001 votes

her shield can save from ignite and some ults...

IcyPepper29 votes

... Most shields, when timed appropriately, can do that. That's what shields do.

AL0001 votes

yeah if riven is smart riven player with good timing... BUT... its like free scaling hexdrinker for short time...

IcyPepper13 votes

It's not free in the slightest, it's built into a champion's kit. Are you complaining about Riven, or just shields in general? Because I'm pretty sure she's not the only one who can be saved from ignite and some ults.

AL0002 votes

shield

SHIELD: 90 / 120 / 150 / 180 / 210 (+ 100% bonus AD)

hard scaling to too many ad stacked item...

usually riven use shield as initiate or escape... so you cant "hard-trade" her until shield is down... she will hit you so hard for 1 second then leave...

IcyPepper13 votes

Trust me, Riven is not the worst offender.

Be glad Shen tends to build tank, because I've seen AP bruiser Shens with so much AP they can give a shield so big with their ult it makes Riven look like a wimp. Or Janna, with the AD steroid she gives.

Trust me, as much as I don't like Riven I don't find her shield to be the worst part of her kit. It shouldn't scale with AD, imo, but the way her kit's designed it's the only scaling that would work. If she had more AP ratios, or used mana, or had trinity force synergy, than perhaps, but for now AD is the way to go.

Divewing1 votes

Or maybe... Bonus health... So she builds bruiser... And instantly becomes 50x more bearable

LeeDark3 votes

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

That's a good one.

Wait... are you joking? Please tell me you're joking. Because BRUISER Riven would be ridonkulous. Her only real drawback is that she HAS to build full offense or lose effectiveness. If she could get away with being tanky, she'd be disgusting, since she would STILL have an AD steroid + Execute ult and a ton of mobility.

It's actually free, no resources remember? Just pointing that out...

JustMyBassCannon3 votes

"Free" as in costing no resource is different from "free" as in not taking up kit power.

This is, I would hope very obviously, the latter case. Her E is apparently a strong enough tool in her kit to make it worth giving Riven subpar innate defenses for a melee champion, make her innate sustain garbage and make her kit scale so that building defense is not an option until you have a lead.

Well, ofc you dont build def on riven dummy, her defense scales with her offense.

JustMyBassCannon4 votes

No, you don't understand just how important that statement is.

Unlike most melee Fighters, Riven's kit cannot accommodate building defense items instead of AD. She can only afford to directly build Lifesteal and Magic Resistance, as those are the only defensive stats that have high-AD items. She has the same defensive paradox that Marksmen have, minus the advantage of being able to fight from a safe distance.

If she can build a pure defensive item, such as Randuin's, without falling behind, she already has a significant lead.

LeeDark4 votes

Except it isn't as much effective health as you ACTUALLY get from building defensive items. The fact that shield forces her into an offensive build makes her squishy when focused.

Just try imagining if the shield scaled with health, and she built the new Hydra with some defense... probably a Black Cleaver... and still had that mobility, an AoE stun, and an AD steroid + execute ult.

I hear ya, and I dont care, rework the bitch so she is fun and healthy to the game. Dont care how many weaknesses she has, she is an un fun champ and every single main riven I have met I have hated play with or against.

LeeDark3 votes

That's not how it works. I feel the same way about Garen. Easy as fuck champion, he just runs at you, silences, and spins. Limited only by cooldowns, tanky and only needs BC to do damage. Annoying as fuck, and he doesn't even require any skill to do those things. And the rework didn't even help, because if you get the upper hand and kill him, he gets STRONGER against you.

But just because I find him annoying doesn't mean he is overpowered. Riven isn't all that strong a pick, currently, and is easily focused down, even if she is ahead. Yeah, if she catches you alone, she's gonna hurt, but she's a duelist--that's what she SHOULD excel at.

We don't nerf or change champions simply because you think they are annoying.

... Most shields, when timed appropriately, can do that. That's what shields do.

But do other people have a dash on their shield that scales with AD? While having insane lifesteal due to her passive procing life steal? Do other shields have like a 2 sec cooldown?

"oh lemme just dodge ur skillshots with my dash (e) oh wait ahah i suck i got hit anyways, its a good thing i have the shield!"

IcyPepper2 votes

But do other people have a dash on their shield that scales with AD?

Most shields tend to have secondary effects, and the AD scaling is unique for Riven. The AD scaling is odd, I guess. I mean, you could argue about Janna's shield, since she can shield herself or allies and even turrets if she wants, giving them a decent AD steroid with a small AP scaling.

And the dash/shield doesn't have a 2 second cooldown, it has 10-6 seconds. If you build cooldown reduction (which you should as Riven), that's a 6 seconds max to barely more than 3 seconds. Since I'm not a Riven main, it could use a higher cooldown but it's not two seconds (that belongs to Vayne, who gets an aa steroid instead of a shield). At least the shield lasts 1.5 seconds, only long enough for a trade or a clutch save, but other shields tend to last longer like Naut's 10 second shield or Janna's 5 second.

Other champions have ways to heal themselves outside of lifesteal, and Riven's passive is hardly unique for proc'ing lifesteal. Lifesteal is proc'd by abilities modified by on-hit effects or abilities that modify autoattacks. I'm not sure Sheen lifesteals, but I believe Riven's passive counts as an ability autoattack modifier.

So to answer your entire question altogether, the answer is no. No other champion has that combination of three variables, because Riven is her own champion. Can Riven's kit heal her own teammates? Can Riven point and click cc at range like Lissandra? Does she have a global skillshot that can get a kill from across the map? Apples and oranges dude.

Only if you're gonna be honest about it. I believe the author of this post was going for one of those "cynical rebuttals of people complaining", which are only EXTREMELY SLIGHTLY less annoying that the "people complaining" posts.

If you're looking for honest discussion about champions and their abilities, you've come to the wrong place.
