I sincerely want to know. Why do people troll?

Occams Raiser··6 votes·7,098 views

I doubt I will get a sincere answer but I figured it might be a "I don't troll, but I have a FRIEND" sort of thing. I am a pretty funny guy so I feel bad for people who aren't or think they are so they try to joke all the time. I always thought that maybe it was that reason that I didn't get trolling. It's like a joke that only someone that isn't funny, thinks is funny.

I didn't think that anyone started as a troll. Most people I figure say, "that game looks cool. I think I would like to be good at that." Then somewhere along the line, it gets boring or something? Maybe you never get as good as you hoped you would be? I just want to know. I really am curious.

Explain the joke cause I will never get it.

I most likely think trolls are born from this:

Bard : Ok, I gotta start improving muhself today, so lets do dis.

Game 1:

Teemo : Lol teemo jungle plz Cassiopeia : Adc Janna : top Bard : wtf is this....

Game 2:

*After 10 minutes into game with his team winning 12 vs 3

Blitzcrank : Oh sorry guys, my bro is giving birth, gtg now trololol Disconnected Bard : U kidding me right....? Amumu : omg that idiot. Oh well, since we're losing, imma try AD amumu. Bard : its 12 v 3...... Braum : imma make a sandwich brb.

Game 3:

started a draft game

Bard : omg pls be a good team this time

*teammate bans Soraka Alistar Urgot *

Bard : What the.. what kind of ban is that??? Annie : Shut up bronzie, Im a smurf, gonna troll ur game :) Fiddlesticks : premade friend here! also a smurf, and i have 23 more accounts, so idc if rito bans me for dizz Bard : ......(at his limit)

Now somewhere, in the green fields of the meadow, lies a small lovely house sitting with 4 highly committed League players (I must say they're quite handsome too)

Azir : Ok guys, let's improve ourselves today alright? DrMundo : Aye! JarvanIV : U got it! Graves : Let us achieve victory today!

Starts to join game...

Game 4: Azir : mid DrMundo : top JarvanIV : jungle Graves : adc Bard (op): ....support

In-game, while closing to the 1:30 minute mark

Graves : Uhhh bard, wtf u doing with that doran's blade? Bard : Juz shut up Graves : ....ok

10 minutes into the game

JarvanIV : Can everyone report Bard pls? For building AD and still go 0/11/2 Azir : Duh, what a fkin spoiler Bard : OH SHUT THE FUCK UP! EVERYONE IS LIKE THIS, EVEN YOU GUYS ARE LIKE THIS, AND NOW UR TELLING ME I CANT? IM SORRY, BUT FEEL MY PAIN OF U FKING TROLLERS!!!

They should seriously start improving the tribunal for this kind of stuff to stop reproducing....

This sounds very right! They need to stop trolls creating more trolls.

Sythriel Draken1 votes

This happens to me a lot. What gets me are those players that start to bitch after your first death, then give up after that. What needs to be done is a better reporting system, and a rewards system to promote not trolling. something like, a random skin if you've gone X number of days without a legitimate report (as anyone can just report you for anything and they won't check the logs) or a free ward skin or something.

When i was VERY new to the game, I didnt realize that it was even possible to make a comeback. First blood was a death sentence and the rest of the game was just waiting until they destroyed nexus, or you surrendered. So, therefor, why take the game seriously, and why not always surrender? So I intentionally fed. Ran under their towers, tried to "touchdown" into their base, anything to make my teammates give up and surrender the game we had already lost.

I don't remember HOW i came to the realization (i was somehow never punished), but somehow I realized that you COULD win, even with a terrible early game, and that my feeding was actually really toxic and hurt people. I guess some people never realize? might be one reason.

Occams Raiser1 votes

cool story, Bro. tell it again. No really! Tell it to every bronze you see. Maybe you can stop the spread of feeders. We needs some words of inspiration to stem the tide.

People troll because their life outside the game is stressful and they feel like they're failing. They wish to spread their misery by making others feel their pain. Its a similar reason why you have these loud bozos in ranked unable to see their own failings and TALK IN CAPS LIKE THIS. They're feeding their own egos to feel better after a crappy day at school or the office.

Trolling is a sign of insecurity and a feeling of social inadequacy, they attempt to attract attention by causing chaos (its a fancy way to call for help). How do I know this? I used to be a troll, both in video games and real life. I no longer do this crap because it doesn't help and I can better serve myself and others by being nice, constructive, and just pleasant fellow by not letting my frustration bleed over on to the internet and games I may be playing.

Nameless Voice2 votes

One of the most common reasons that I see are because people are super-negative, they think the game is lost even though it isn't, and so they start to troll to get the game over quicker despite the fact that no one else wants to surrender and the other players still think they can make a comeback and win.

ImBadWithNames2 votes

Because the game itself is pure cancer, so you got to make it fun yourself. And trolling however fucked up it seems, is the most fun I had in this shitty game.

If I'm having a bad day and somebody on my team picks a champion who has a very solid record of ruining my game expirience, I've done things I'm not proud of. I'll admit I just hate fiddlesticks. If I'm on a losing streak and I had a shitty day of work and you pick fiddle, Im gonna cosplay Satan... :/

I was going to just find a picture of Omega Squad Teemo and do a quote, but someone seems to have done that for me.

Im not a troll but I figure for most it's #7 they just do not give a shit about anyone else.

DeloricVI1 votes

You know, once, I felt a sort of satisfaction when I made someone really angry in soloqueue... that person was someone who was going duo top as amumu with garen. I was going solo top as teemo with a jungler, and I had to have killed this amumu like.... 12 times. This was back before I was level 10, so duo top was a thing, and being alone was bad news for me, not being a smurf. Except this time.

As the mummy player began to produce curses of his own with increased frequency, getting more kills on him was much more fun as I saw him throw a tantrum in all chat. Now, provided, he was spamming crl+4 at the beginning of the game, so it was somewhat justified that the cocky Amumu player got his comeuppance, but I get it; you make someone so mad they're foaming out the mouth... it's kinda fun to watch... sometimes. Now, as bad a person as that makes me, I don't make a point of feeding intentionally; in fact when I end up feeding I join in on my team's frustration.

I presume that trolls do the same thing; they make people mad and enjoy the mess that they created, but they piss off the wrong people. Whether they don't feel like trying, or aren't good at this game, they feed intentionally and make their own team rage instead of the enemy. That's not cool, because when you shut someone down that hard, you ruin one person's day. You feed that hard on purpose, you ruin 4 people's days.

Occams Raiser1 votes

I just don't understand the loss of your own 20-40 minutes. Did you go in planning to lose when the game started? I want to know when someone decides they don't want to win anymore.

DeloricVI1 votes

Honestly, I don't know. Like I said, I don't fully understand why people do this, and I don't purposely lose games. I do end up feeding some games, but that's usually when my team doesn't cooperate and an enemy gets fed, or I'm just getting outplayed.

Maybe they think that 4 times the angry people means 4 times the fun? Either way, like I said, these people would be great to play with if they just got good instead of being bad. But hey, that would require some work, right? And of course they go into ranked because it's easier to get a reaction out of people that have something at stake.

Occams Raiser1 votes

Odd that punishment for ranked play isn't ruffer.

LegendaryLemur1 votes

Most of the time when i troll its in a chat room because i think its funny or because someone seems really uptight and i want to get them to loosen up a little.

Occams Raiser1 votes

seems like joking with them would be better for that than against them.

LegendaryLemur1 votes

No i don't think so. Sometimes people (or at least me) need to be pushed past a brink to be able to reassess themselves from a different perspective.

Occams Raiser1 votes

I should have added to the vote as number 8: Cause I got trolled! Up vote this comment if this is your answer.

I was thinking about it yesterday and came to a conclusion.

For trolls LoL stopped to be amusing, joyful experience. They are simply bored. They seek some thrill, fun. And only way they can do it is by breaking unspoken rules of "not being an asshole". It's some kind of fetish i think.

If we had something shiny-new in LoL, like map, gamemode, just something that would make them interested, then they'd stop trolling.

Occams Raiser1 votes

I was thinking this too.

IcyPepper1 votes

All your options apply. I trolled in forums about seven years ago as a dumb teenager, but only for jokes and not to hurt others.

But people... well you've met people, right? Some are bad, some are good, some hold grudges and some bully certain targets for absolutely no reason. People have a high capacity to be stupid, but they have just as much opportunity to exercise maturity and not do that.

After like 5 games in a row where I want to top and everyone keeps insta locking I just break and I'll gladly go "support" but I'll support a assassin or bruiser... It just seems unfair that because someone's computer loads faster, they ALWAYS get to call the lane they want and not let others have a shot,... Wether it's calling the role first or just instalockng, it bugs me like hell... I don't always ask for the lane I want, but when I go a few hours without the role I want, I just say " fuck it" and play whoever I want at the role I'm stuck with. Then there's those games where I just feel silly cus I just finished snorting that kilo of coke in my fridge and I pretend I'm playing call of duty and chase for kills :^)

i was under the impression on Ranked it was random pick order and on normals you can play team builder. Does that not solve both your problems? Are you still playing blind regular instead of TB? If so, why?

Team builder takes too long, people dodge every five seconds and just doesn't feel worth the wait.... And in ranked I won't troll. In ranked I'll fill and play whatever is needed. I'm talking about normals. I will confess though that sometimes while in ranked games I forget it's ranked and start playing carelessly... The other day I played lucian top thinking it was a normal, I was wondering why my team was hardcore raging at me picking lucian top into akali... Tbh I actually did fine. We won early, lost horribly mid game ( mid lissandra fed katarina, the ASSASIN COUNTER) ( liss was the one being most abusive too lol. Even our adc was like " liss lucian hasn't fed akali a single kill and you've fed Kat. give the guy some credit") everyone wanted to surrender but I told everyone assassins fall off late game. Everyone was saying I was full of shit but sure enough after turtleing for like 20 minutes, we aced them in our base and won... So I guess troll picking ( on accident; I forgot it was ranked) can sometimes be useful :) I forgot the point of this rant but there you go xD

i play vayne tp top sometimes into certain matchups cause i get bored sometimes. or nid/katarina/leblanc support

if I'm trolling its probably because I'm sick of a game still going on. Only reason I can think of. I don't really ever decide in a ranked game to start trolling from the moment I queue up if thats what you mean. lol

off meta doesnt equal troll if you have stats to prove it. For example I occasionally play AD nocturne top. have like 7 wins this season on it. Dont even play noct that often I play top lane even less often. Maybe like 1 out of like 15 games is top lane, not even that sometimes. And other days I play top multiple times..-shrug-

Anyway exhaust ignite jax/irelia and flash ignite 60% lifesteal nocturne top. Pretty fun :p

I was playing swain, and i was behind. I was doing good after i feed a darius, i got a few kills on Yasuo and Kog'Maw. But then i say don't take my cs in all caps. Becuase i have a very low cs count. But my Yasuo follows me every where, i was taking minions at btm. He followed me, at top also follows. Then i said stop in all caps, and he laughs. I fucking hate that YASUO ASS SO FUCKING MUCH. HAD TO KICK A TABLE A FEW TIMES TO GET IT OF MY NERVES. WRITING THIS ALSO HELPED.

Because games are meant to be fun, and this game is anything but fun so people try to make it fun by picking non meta champs and non meta builds and play the game not to win but to have fun. Yeah it might piss people off but atleast I'm having fun and they're not, so who's problem is it?

For me troll mean Spanish and French 80% of troll came from this people every promo i should have a spanish teemo trying him for the 1st time and give the enemy 20 kills and write sorry my bad and riot ban me bcz i flame him

Most people start out as good players, but eventually they see more and more trolls in their games, making it impossible to really have fun. They start to find new ways to enjoy the game since they know that trying their best wont do anything except earn a few kills maybe. So instead of playing and realizing they will waste 40 minutes of a game they know they cant win, they will troll and try to find comedy in others misery instead. League community sucks so bad now days. GG trolls and people that say mean things to others who make a mistake. Your the kindling of the bondfire.

People troll cus they're spoiled little shits who don't get their way. They either autofilled, or didn't get the champ they wanted. And cus they can - cus Riot is more interested in protecting these sensitive souls, cus "words hurt". This doesn't just happen in League of Legends. It happens everywhere. People troll over the internet cus it has no real consequences for them, cus they're anonymous, and nobody's monitoring them. Now, if these snowflakes were punished by someone in real life over the stupid shit they do and say to people online, on the same level as they would be in real life, they would be too scared to do anything. It's what elementary school kids do until they get a beating. I also think it's a problem that riot just lets them keep playing. Should maybe learn from World of Warcraft and have people pay monthly to play. F2P games are more often than not troll infested. People dont invest money in trolling. Also, riot games need to change their ban policy. Dont ban players for telling trolls to stop trolling. You have a chat function in an online multiplayer game! People are gonna talk shit!
