Ranked Minimap Is an Eyesore (Literally), Because Science
As in it literally hurts my eyes to look at it. This is important because the map changed over time from having red and green hues to the current, highly-saturated blue map.
Looking at the minimap now means you are looking into a block of LED screen emitting light along the royal blue spectrum. In-game I've seen several people complaining about it, and there are biological reasons why this map is inferior. Consider the following:
-
Cones in your eye allow color vision in RGB. Each eye has around 7 million cones. Of those, 64% detect red, 32% detect green, and only 2% detect blue.
-
Cones are layered into a shape similar to an extremely steep bell curve. The red and green cones are in the center with the few blues distributed in a thin layer at the base. The disparity in number and density causes the eye to see blue light in lower resolution.
-
The eye lens focuses light onto the "peak" of the cone structure (called the fovea) where the red and green cones are stacked, so there is degredation of an image relative to the blue light concentration. This results in image blur.
-
The lens tries to focus light on the fovea, but the short wavelength of blue light gives it a different focal length than red and green light. Having adapted primarily for red and green light, the eye has to work harder to focus on any blue light. Blue light concentration increases the effort, causing a sensation of "pain" in many people viewing bright light (like an LED) in a high concentration (like our new minimap).
There are a variety of other factors, but the conclusion is that the new minimap is too fucking blue. It's harder to see clearly, it appears more blurry and lower resolution. It actually strains the eye when it has to focus on a blue field frequently and rapidly over the course of games.
Aside from that, blue light is a major trigger of photosensitivity, photophobia, and migraines. It also causes computer vision syndrome, which is triggered and exacerbated on a continuum based on blue light concentration. Sitting at a monitor displaying mostly red and green for a long time will have less of an effect than sitting at a monitor with a block of perpetual high-concentration blue.
TL;DR: Change the minimap back. The other one was objectively inferior, because evolution. Thanks.
