Maokai Support

After having some fun with maokai in urf, I decided to try him in normal games. Tried a bunch of different roles. Jungle (obviously) seemed to work. But support stood suprisingly well. Rooting the enemy adc while maxing sapplings. Huge poke and cc. Sapplings slow, W roots, Q even slows. I am not sure if I should rank with this, but I have 3 wins and 0 losses when I played jg or supp. ( I played other roles and lost, basically if i took tp or ignite). My real question is , is mao support viable? I am unsure if I am getting lucky. Usually something goes REALLY WELL and I lose my first game with it in ranked. Any tips though?

Maokai support is viable.

Perhaps others are better options (Leona does much the same thing, except without mana problems) but he's still a solid pick.

Maokai is just OP, so yeah, pretty much works anywhere

Is it played in higher elo? Me being a bronzish noob, I never see maokai.

He's played A LOT in higher elo in the top lane. He's in the top 3 of best top laners so if he's available he's usually going to the top to win lane and not in the bottom lane.

Maokai was actually originally designed to be a support. But his kit turned out to be good for jungling so he got moved there. But his W range (and consequently ganking power) got nerfed in a rework, then he moved to top lane where his sustain was useful.
